Welcome to a week in my life as a surgical resident on Breast & Endocrine surgery! I'm working in a big tertiary hospital in Brisbane this year and this has probably been one of my favourite rotations so far. Enjoy :)
About me:
My name is Surina Taneja and I am a junior doctor who trained in the UK. I make videos about being a doctor as well as sharing my insights on the well-being of our mind, body and planet 🧠 💪🏽 🌍

A lot of UK junior doctors have come to Canada, passed the GP exam and working as family doctors(GP). Canada needs a lot of GPs. A GP in Canada makes no less than $200K a year. Canadian $ is slightly stronger than Australian $.

Hi Surina, lovely and informative video as always😀. On a scale of 1-10 how would consider gen. surgery as a carrier option for having good work life balance. If not gen surgery, what are the surgical specialties you’ll recommend someone which could provide a good work life balance and a good salary. Thanks in advance😊.
@drsurinataneja
@drsurinataneja Год назад
You can make of it what you want, it would probably range from a 1 to a 6/7 I think based on how much you choose to put in. I think urology, breast and endo, ENT and ophthalmology are probably the better surgical specialities for good work life balance.

Dear Surina and all, Can someone enlighten us the difficulty to get into Aus surgery training post. Heard many Aus junior doctors stuck at Unaccredited post for >5 years post grad. ("Trainee" in unaccredited position). Many negative feelings from Aus doctos keep drifting in this Black hole.
@drsurinataneja
@drsurinataneja Год назад
Yeah pretty tough especially coming as an IMG. Probably 2-4 years unaccredited RMO/PHO jobs before you'll be in a position to apply and then it is pretty competitive after that. Not impossible and first step is to come here short term, see if you like it and get to understand the applying process here

I've 2 benign fibroadenoma -one is left side(2.5cm*1.5cm) another is 0.7cm. Doctor suggests me for surgery. But I've no pain in breast , only causes pain during period. No family history of cancer.Should I have done surgery? But what if it will grow back again? What is the probability of growing back again ? Plz answer me . I'm so worried ☹️

Is it normal in Australia that it isn't the nurse inserting cannulas and drawing bloods?
@drsurinataneja
@drsurinataneja Год назад
Yup!
@annagilda1
@annagilda1 Год назад
I think it depends on the location. I work in a remote part of Queensland and it's normal for the nurses to canulate and take bloods. They're bloody good at it too.
@nabalienalien

@@drsurinataneja wow interesting. I'm a doctor in Europe and I'm really glad that by now our nurses primarily take care of that. They only ask us doctors to do it, if they have difficulty with it.

@@drsurinataneja As someone from a non medical background, I would find it very frightening and confronting to witness a mastectomy (especially if I could relate to the patient because they are a similar age etc). How do you manage to psychologically separate work and reduce emotional reactions?
@drsurinataneja
@drsurinataneja Год назад
Ooh I see! Yeah it can be emotionally challenging job as you see people at their most vulnerable/unwell and it's only too easy to relate situations back to yourself and your own loved ones. There is an element of "desensitisation" most health care workers have to go through to make the work load bearable and to remain professional and practical. Gets easier with time. Some emotional attachment is needed to allow you to empathise and have intrinsic motivation to do your job well.
