I've had a pretty interesting week. Tuesday evening I went to pick my wife up from work and ended up getting caught in the middle of a tornado. It tore up some roofs and uprooted some trees in our local cemetery and devastated our park, but thankfully no one was hurt. As far as reading goes, I'm making my way through my Stormlight reread and just started Elantris today. I'm also slowly making my way through In Cold Blood. God of War Ragnarok has been a blast so far as well

It takes up right where this 1 left off But it has a little bit more plot. Extremely crazy and fun But there is an end goal.looking forward to Guards Guards soon. Did you see Brian Keene and a bunch of other authors are in the final stretch of submitting the manuscript for THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT: STORIES FROM STEPHEN KING’S THE STAND. He noted that, "it’s the very first shared world anthology set in Stephen King’s literary universe." Curious what your thoughts are on something like that. Additional info: It’s a very thick book. We'll see how it goes. I will say these books read very quickly even with their length. Great series! Kind of trying to leave my TBR wide open a bit, so we shall see how it goes. I do want to read The Book that Broke the World, and really want to get back into Stormlight. I'm like you though Mike, I kind of want some 500 page books or something before I get back into the huge Stormlight books. I feel as though Lord of the Rings is turning towards the path of Star Wars, not in terms of poor quality in writing or characterization ( though that’s been crappy too). Rather we are seeing these franchises that cover enormous universes continuously returning to the same characters and periods of history within the world. This makes the story feel much smaller and unoriginal. The carpet is getting thin so to speak. I’d rather see a release of behind the scenes footage and interviews from the original film trilogy. I finished The Fox Wife this week which I really enjoyed (probably not for you Mike but maybe another viewer🖖🏻) it has to do with the fox legends of Asia which I remember learning about from a hell boy movie of all places. I think this book might fall under magical realism but I’m not sure. I’m still reading The Rape of Europa which is fascinating history. Happy Reading!

This is the problem with modern Hollywood and these networks. They just can't let something good rest. If it has a degree of success they're going to milk the franchise until there is nothing left and the IP is damaged. There is barely any originality left anymore. The Hunt for Gollum is the perfect example. I'm guessing they're going to be adapting the " The Hunt for the Ring" section of Unfinished Tales along with some of the lotr appendices stuff, but who the hell thinks this is a good idea? Sure I enjoyed reading about it but it doesnt even have close to enough content to make a movie out of it, or even tell a complete story; its just extra cool info to read about. And yea Peter Jackson is back, well he also made The Hobbit movies..plenty of room to be skeptical and annoyed.
@Yesica1993
@Yesica1993 17 дней назад
It's not a new problem, though. TV shows go on and on and on, long after they should have ended. The very expression of a show, "jumping the shark", goes back to Happy Days, with Fonzie waterskiing, and it pretty much marked the downhill of the show. (I can't even remember if I saw that particular episode, though I've seen clips.) Even going all the way back to M*A*S*H, the quality was dropping and they seemed out of ideas. The only reason ER was able to last 15 seasons was because they had so many cast changes. (They did have one of the few great series finales, though. I'll give them that!) Frasier got more "slaphappy sitcom" in later seasons. Let's not even talk about The X-Files. That's probably the worst example I can recall. The sad fact is, sooner or later, everything needs to come to end. But Hollywood can't accept that because they want the money. So they draaaaaaaaaaaaaaag things out, until even the fans are begging, "Please, just let it DIE!"
@paradigmshift7907
@paradigmshift7907 17 дней назад
@@Yesica1993 Its not new, but I think its certainly more common. But I was more talking about adaptations of book material. Too many seasons can be a problem, but its not like we got 3 Happy Days spin offs or continuations. Or even a reboot

Oh man, so agree on spinoff culture. They're so fixated on milking hits for every cent of profit that it irks me everytime I see a spinoff/expansion announcement now. Its why nothing's truly good anymore - you might have a great movie or book or series but you nearly always have the caveat of *but this other thing sucked* to tack on, because they always inevitably push it too far and ruin it.

@calebmauer1751
@calebmauer1751 17 дней назад
But why read in publication order? It's so rare for a book series to not need to be read that way, and Terry Pratchett pulls it off perfectly. He never has to lean on previous books because he gets the characterization out early and consistently in every book so you know who these characters are without reading a previous one. It's like, you wouldn't expect someone to read all of Marvel comics in publication order, people can skip to Spiderman. It just doesn't make sense to tell someone who constantly is talking about how he has too many books on his TBR to ever finish them, that he should read in publication order on a 40 book series. Let him skip the weaker ones so he can enjoy some of the best and we can get to see videos about them sometime before RU-vid pulls the plug and switches to only 15 second AI-made videos.

To play devils advocate. The Handmaids Tale was only one book, but the subsequent seasons were well liked. Remains to be seen with Shogun, but it’s going to be tough to top season 1

There’s a sequel to Handmaid’s called The Testaments and they might be adapting some of that - not sure.

You previously said you want to read Discworld in publication order, so fyi, Guards! Guards! is not the fifth book in the series, it's #8 according to Wikipedia.

Let's skip to the best stuff. The reader who sent him those books obviously included Guards Guards deliberately.

Mike, don't say "Sir, " lol. You're playing the Crown's game.

For real, we don't call Mick Jagger "Sir Mick Jagger". It's just an award, you don't have to rescue a village from a fire-breathing dragon to get it. The King doesn't even decide who gets it, it's decided by a committee and then the monarch essentially just hands out the award, like an MC at an award show.

I don't watch Shogun and have never read the book and I have no horse in the race, but making a second season would demonstrably not be fan-fiction. It's a professionally produced television show with full IP rights being released for compensation, which is not what fan-fiction is. Also, an adaptation is not the source material, and it has no obligation to be. The book is the book, the show is the show. If you don't want to watch the second season, don't watch the second season. The book will still exist, untainted.

@@lisac1619 It's the correct one. By the rigid definition Mike describes, every Batman film, every Planet of the Apes film, every MCU movie, etc is essentially fanfiction because it doesn't pull directly from the original source. Obviously these comic book franchises have naturally expanded and progressed over decades, but in the case of POTA, there is one original source, a book. It was never adapted in a faithful way to the screen, including the 1968 film. Like it or not, it changed cinema in significant ways and had a lasting impact on the industry. I get what he's saying that studios should focus more on original and new ideas/works, but I don't think he's viewing the matter from all possible angles.

@@seanbester1465 Yeah, notable exceptions exist. Starship Troopers is another famous example. Frankenstein had only one book, and the popular conception of Frankenstein is not very like what was in the book, that came from a stage play adaptation.

I never got the hype behind Steven Spielberg even as a kid I always found his movies quite boring🤷

He made Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Jaws, Saving Private Ryan. He also made Ready Player One, but still, it's not like he hasn't earned some hype.

@@calebmauer1751 I guess I was mostly thinking of Indiana Jones I totally forgot about Jurassic Park and Saving Private Ryan he's just a hit or miss for me I haven't seen those movies in years the last Spielberg movie I saw was Bridge of spies I guess he's just not really on my radar anymore now that I went back and looked at his filmography he's made more good movies than bad 🤣
