Yes, there are soldiers from all 3 - or 4 if you are being technical - language regions serving in the Swiss army. However, it is not the case that only a particular group of speakers become officers. There are mixed units like an infantry battalion with both German and French speaking soldiers. Usually they are grouped together in companies or sections. The higher an officer's rank the more he is expected to have basic knowledge of an additional national language.

It isn't attention to detail, they just filmed it with troops from the Swiss Army and those troops spoke their language depending on the area. Most high command is done in German, but there are staff officers from all language groups.

On my time in the swiss army, i need to say that our stgw 90 (Sturmgwehr 90) one of the best rifles in the world is... the only downside of this rifle is that it only carries 20 rounds of NATO ammunition. (What they give you, but for special forced exists also a 30 round magazine, witch we used as Grenadiers)

I know funny story of people that ended up in companies where quite nobody spoke their language... and so they had to learn it at the moment, but these are stories of the the past that I heard (maybe someone can confirm). now at recruitment they ask you which languages ​​among the 3 ​​you're able to speak (and you must prove it) and based on that you can choose the military function, yes because there are functions that are not accessible if you don't know a certain language. +Nikolas Wirz Offenbar doch. Ich rückte 1978 in die Sommer RS ein, im selben Jahr gab mein Vater im Alter von 50 Jahren seine militärischen Sachen ab. Sein Karabiner 31 behielt er, übergab dieses Gewehr später an mich. Es ist eine Ehrensache für mich, dass ich jedes Jahr einige Magazine GP 11 für Vater schiessen gehe. Vielleicht heisst es irgendwann, ich habe nicht gewusst, dass 1993 immer noch Stgw 57 bei der Armee Verwendung fanden. Doch, fanden sie. Unsere Einheit wurde auf die PzJ TOW/Piranha umgeschult. Einige alte Soldaten wie ich aus den Pzaw Kp wurden übernommen. Die Halterungen für die Gewehre im Panzerjäger waren für die neuen Stgw 90 vorgesehen, so dass wir unsere sperrigen alten Stgw 57 irgendwo im Fahrzeugraum deponieren mussten. Wir hörten von unseren jungen Kameraden allerlei Sprüche zu unseren "Wagenhebern." Die Kameradschaft war aber super und die Kommentare waren immerzu kollegial und nie bösartig. Und beim Wettschiessen guckten die jungen Kollegen dann doch plötzlich achtungsvoll, als die Kollegen von der "schweren Artillerie" (7,5 x 55 mm vs 5,56 x 45mm) die Abzeichen schossen, sie aber nicht. Mein Stgw 57 wurde im Jahr 2000 aus dem Militärdienst genommen, ich behielt es natürlich und schiesse nach wie vor jedes Jahr mindestens das Obligatorische und das Feldschiessen. +Jean-Pierre Meier Natürlich bleibt ein Gewehr ein Gewehr. Vamire und Venom wurden aber durch modernere Flugzeuge ersetzt, ebenso der Centurion. Die Flugzeuge durch den F-5 Tiger, der Centurion durch den Leopard. Die Panzer 68 wurden im Zusammenhang der massiven Verkleinerung der Armee ersatzlos gestrichen (der Bö Fei im Osten fiel weg) und die Hunter wurden 1994 nach 30 Einsatzjahren ebenfalls ersatzlos ausgemustert. Der Betrieb dieser Flugzeuge wurde zu aufwändig, der Unterhalt dieser betagten Flugzeuge wurde einfach zu teuer. Diese ersatzlose Ausmusterung hatte für die Luftwaffe weiterführende Folgen, verlor sie mit der Ausmusterung der Hunter die Möglichkeit, Luft - Boden Einsätze zu fliegen. Mit der Ausmusterung der AMIR (Mirage IIIR) Ende 2003 verlor die Luftwaffe im Weiteren die Fähigkeit, schnelle, bemannte und bewaffnete Aufklärungseinsätze zu fliegen.

Es verwunderte mich bloss, dass ein Karabiner mit Geradezugverschluss immer noch zum Einsatz kam, obwohl Selbstlader schon lange in den meisten Armeen Standard waren. Die Amerikaner begannen schon den zweiten Weltkrieg mit einem halbautomatischem Gewehr und spätestens als die Russen die halbe Welt mit vollautomatischen Kalashnikovs bewaffneten, waren manuelle Handrepetierer doch vollkommen veraltet. Der K31 ist eine hervorragende und präzise Waffe nichtsdestotrotz und ich freue mich, erst kürzlich selbst ein Exemplar erworben zu haben. Freundliche Grüsse.

+Nikolas Wirz Hallo Nikolas, teilweise haben Sie ja recht. "Die meisten Armeen hatten Selbstlader." 1939 aber waren die amerikanischen Streitkräfte noch mit dem Springfield Gewehr aus dem 1. Weltkrieg ausgerüstet und das britische Heer wurde erst 1957 mit einem halbautomatischen Gewehr ausgerüstet. Die Repetiergewehre hatten im Vergleich zu Selbstladern eine aussergwöhnlich lange Lebensdauer. Zudem war der Begriff der Munitionsverschwendung ein häufig verwendetes Argument um beim System der Repetiergewehre zu bleiben. Auch die deutsche Wehrmacht hatte bei Kriegsbeginn immer noch ihr Gewehr 98 mit "Drehverschluss." Das halbautomatische Gewehr 41 und auch das Gewehr 43 wurde erst während dem Krieg eingeführt - entscheiden konnten sie dessen Ausgang zum Glück auch nicht mehr. Was mir eher zu denken gibt ist, dass unsere Armee 1939 aufgrund der Sparmassnahmen in sehr bedenklichem Zustand war. In unserer Armee gab es zum Beispiel keine einzige Maschinenpistole. Man stelle sich vor, eine Füsilier- oder Grenadierkompanie im Nahkampf und kein einziger Soldat hat eine MP. Diese wurden ja erst nach 1941 eingeführt. Viel Spass beim Schiessen mit Ihrem Karabiner!

Der Unterschied von einem Gewehrtyp zum anderen Gewehrtyp ist meines Erachtens im Schiessstand nicht so gross (obwohl ich mit meinem original Stgw 57 weniger Punkte schiessen muss für den Kranz, als die Kumpels mit dem Stgw 90) wie z.B. im Häuserkampf. Ich möchte unsere Soldaten heute nicht mit einem Karabiner oder Stgw 57 in einen Verteidigungskrieg schicken, da ich erkannt habe, welche Vorteile ein Grenadier mit dem Stgw 90 gegenüber dessen Vorgängertypen hat. Ähnlich verhält es sich mit den Panzern. Auf dem Gefechtsfeld hat derjenige Panzer die beste Überlebenschance, der seinen ersten Schuss ins Ziel setzt. Der Leopard kann dies, die älteren Panzertypen hatten - abgesehen vom Pz 68/88 keine moderne Feuerleitanlage, was für den Richter an der Panzerkanone viel mehr Zeit erfordert, die Zieldaten (z.B. Distanz, Fahrgeschwindigkeit) zu ermitteln, zu zielen und schliesslich doch zu schiessen. Zudem ist die Panzerung eines Pz 68 oder Centurion und die Fahrleistungen im Gelände für die heutige Zeit nicht mehr ausreichend. Ich hatte mal die Gelegenheit, Leopard, Pz 68 und Centurion live im Gelände zu sehen. Es war erschreckend, wie die alten Panzer angeschlichen kamen, der Leopard aber flott dahergerauscht kam. Die Verwendung der Türme der Centurion Panzer in den Centi-Bunker fand ich danach eine tolle Idee. Weshalb man da allerdings die Rohrparallelen MGs ausgebaut hatte, ist mir schleierhaft. Aber diese Bunker sind bekanntlich heute leider auch Geschichte. Bei den Flugzeugen ist es doch ähnlich. Meinen Sie wirklich, dass Sie heute noch einen Piloten finden würden, der in einem 50 jährigen oder noch älteren Flugzeug in einen Kampfeinsatz zu fliegen bereit wäre? Heute, da hinter jedem Busch ein Feind, mit einer von der Schulter abgefeuerten Flablenkwaffe warten kann - und Sie sitzen in einer antiken Kiste, welche über keine elektronische Warnvorrichtungen verfügt, deshalb auch über keine Gegenmassnahmen wie Chaff und Flares? Darüber hinaus verfügt Ihre Maschine über derart wenig Leistungsreserven, dass wirkliche Ausweichmanöver gar nicht geflogen werden könnten...

Those are Swiss K31 rifles. The people seen there are artillery crew and since they aren't stationed in the frontlines, they have no need for sophisticated and expensive assault rifles.

The film was shot during the introduction of the STG-57. Obviously, infantry got it first, and artillery (the troops you are referring to) among last. The transition was finished about two years after this film was shot.

You are joking, yet back in the day the Swiss fortress system in the Alps was very similar to a large naval fleet including several aircraft carriers (aircraft caverns within the mountains actually) and a whole lot of heavy far range artillery, very similar to naval guns of this era. This was top secret and is therefore not featured in this film.

Solche "Abschreckungsvideos" werden einfach nicht mehr gedreht weil man nicht einen potenziellen Feind abschrecken muss. Btw, wir Grenadiere können es ohne probleme mit jeder spezialeinheit aufnehmen da wette ich drauf.

@@schlizzer2018 Du bist sicher gut ausgebildet und motiviert. Aber in den 80 er und 90 er Jahren gab es halt einfach mehr Soldaten wie dich.... Zudem hatte und hat das Stgw57 deutlich mehr Feuerkraft als das Stgw 90. Das ist übrigens weltweit das einzige Gewehr, dass ein Maschinengewehr, ein Scharfschützengewehr und ein Mienenwerfer ist.

In theroy switzerland practiced armed neutrality, but it was very clear in the mid 20th century that the soviet ideology was a bigger threat then western european ones. Switzerland also was part of the stay behind operations in europe therefore the movie assumed an invasion from the soviet union or warsaw pact in general.

Soldiers of a certain age at that time were relegated to "Landwehr" and "Landsturm", these did not get the StGw 57 for a while. Same is true for auxiliary troops like the "Train" with their horses.
