What kills me is he saw it right there. He knew that was a threat or at least manipulation to get her mom to take all the blame and he still kept having sex with her and promoting her despite dozens of other women he could have chosen.

The problem is Concubine Ling being favored and constantly promoted is a historical fact. This story spins Ruyi as the good party and Concubine Ling as the final boss, but the showrunners also have to adhere to historical facts such as Concubine Ling having a few sons and a daughter with the Emperor. If you watched Yanxi palace the roles of all the concubines are almost reversed and Concubine Ling is the MC protagonist.
