I believe the "golden rule" for trailers is 10 to 12 percent tongue weight for a bumper pull and 20 to 25 percent for gooseneck/fifth-wheel. I've always followed this and it has worked well for me. It did require me to take a trip to the scales each time I bought new equipment but that has paid off.
@RockhillfarmYT
@RockhillfarmYT 2 года назад
Thanks for sharing. I’m seeing 10 to 12% on a bumper pole and 15 or less on the gooseneck but now I can check it every load because it will vary depending on trailer type and load positioning Thanks for watching

Excellent video! Things to consider are weather and surface conditions. While the percentage rules are a great guideline, they aren't a solid rule. I live in Canada and deal with adverse and harsh conditions. I grew up in a towing company and have a couple of seasons on the ice roads. I've also attended tractor trailer skid school and have done donuts with a tractor trailer. I have experience with what I'm about to state, and my only concern is people's safety. I always try to transfer as much weight as possible to my tow vehicle, within the ratings of the hitch and vehicle I'm using. The reason is that the heavier the tow vehicle, the more control it has over the load. I want my tires planted to the surface I'm driving on. And yes, I would load that tractor forward on the gooseneck, just like you stated people wouldn't. This maximizes my traction, which is important on loose gravel, crosswinds, heavy rainfall, etc. I've seen numerous vehicles with trailers in the ditch, simply being overpowered by the trailers' effect on the tow vehicle. Sure, they were probably within the guidelines and ratings, but the tow vehicle can jackknife easier due to lower weight on the rear axle. It’s going to happen so fast that most people won't be able to react quickly enough to stop it.

Glad to see you back all bright eyed and bushytailed! Another thing to take into consideration with a bumper pull, is the transfer of weight off of the front truck axle to the rear truck axle. It is possible to have a total weight well within the limits of the truck but be way over the limit of the rear axle. Also, too much weight off of the front axle and your steering may act up. If that is the case, you would need to use a weight distribution hitch. That lets you keep the weight distribution proportionately correct between the front and rear axle of your truck. Measure your front bumper height without having the trailer attached, then measure it with the trailer attached. You will immediately see what I'm talking about. Your rear axle acts as a fulcrum. The more weight you put on the hitch, the more weight you take off of the front axle. You may find that you will need a master's degree in mathematics if you want to use your trailer correctly. When in doubt, ask a state trooper. It's better to ask him before you meet him while pulling your trailer. You could get a ticket and have to hire someone with the proper equipment to get your trailer off of the highway. The trooper generally will not let you continue to operate your truck/trailer combo if you are in violation. As the boy scouts say, "Be prepared!"

Thanks for sharing that info. The heaviest thing I’ve pulled is the dump trailer in the video. Stopping and starting were really good but I could feel a little sway side to side. Not nearly as bad as when I pulled the dump trailer with a half ton Definitely should’ve had a weight distribution hitch then I watched a video yesterday from Weigh safe That was explaining how those distribution hitches work My first thought was thinking I didn’t need it because the front of a diesel is so much heavier than the back and I’m trying to put my full capacity on the trailer. Their video did a good job though of showing exactly what you’re describing That may be why the numbers don’t add up to me. 6000 pound rating on the rear axle. 1900 pounds in the bed and I’m at capacity. The rear end of a truck seems pretty light so I’m asking where those other 4000 pounds come from. The answer is probably that it shifts from the front of the truck I’m thinking about getting one and covering it in a video
@RockhillfarmYT
@RockhillfarmYT 2 года назад
When you are reading the rules and requirements, It all sounds intimidating Steve I mentioned in the video that I lost control and almost had an accident because of an improperly loaded trailer last year. That’s when I learned about using the manual brake controller while driving A lot of people haul more than their vehicles are rated and it works out fine but you sure as heck don’t want to I have too much weight shifted to the back of your trailer
@johntmarshall1323
@johntmarshall1323 2 года назад
Some car haulers and probably other types of trailers have a lower weight rating without a weight distributing hitch. In other words, to legally use the full capacity of the trailer you must use a weight distributing hitch. Same thing with tow vehicles and both tongue weight and towing capacity.

Glad to see you are back healthy again Brock and thank you for a Great video! The importance of this information can not be overstated. I have never pulled a trailer with to little tongue weight (at least not farther then a half mile) and I have never pulled one with so much tongue weight that it effected my steering. Having said that I am also very sure that I have pulled a lot of trailers with a less then optimal load distribution. I am looking at purchasing a Felling 20ft 14k tilt bed equipment trailer (heaviest capacity trailer I have ever had) and will definitely be looking at those hitches and hitting the scales. There are a lot of people pulling trailers that you can tell by looking at the set up and load that they are way wrong; not to mention that little dance the trailer is doing as it is pulled down the road. Anyway, thanks again for a great video!

Good information to put out there Brock One time I was riding with my Dad when I was a little feller and we were meeting a guy towing a tractor on a bumper pull trailer behind a short wheelbase F-150 and that rig was swaying side to side so violently it was jumping from the outside edge of his lane to the middle of our lane, Dad had to completely stop and get off the road to give this guy some room. Dude regained control a little ways ahead of us and when he went past us his eyes looked as big as chicken eggs! That experience pops in my head a lot of times as a reminder to not be in the "just send it" crowd.

I have four bumper pull trailers of different types And I was really excited to get my first gooseneck. Everything about the gooseneck is better. It pulls better. Once you get used to it, it backs and maneuvers better especially in tight spaces. The only thing I didn’t understand is it will put a higher percentage of your trailer weight onto the truck If you are pulling a compact tractor with a three-quarter ton truck it doesn’t really matter what percentage of your trailer weight transfers to the truck because the load is not heavy enough at 5 to 8000 pounds However, if you’re pulling 15,000 pounds it’s a real consideration Thanks for watching and commenting

Good to know your tongue weight but not good leaving that scale in there to get beat to death. Would you jump up and down on any scale? I doubt it. Get a Sherline tongue scale and do it right. They're only $150.00 and well worth it.

The point of the 10% is to prevent the truck from becoming unstable as you remember. As long as you are "close" to 10% you will have a stable tow experience. One thing that you are not taking into consideration is that the 10% is for bumper pull trailers. For a gooseneck trailer you need to have a minimum of 15% of the trailer weight on the kingpin or you will have control issues like you did with your bumper pull.
@RockhillfarmYT
@RockhillfarmYT 2 года назад
Thanks for sharing. I did talk about that in the video. The numbers I saw online were 10 to 12% for bumper pull and 13 to 15% for a gooseneck. Those are pretty much the numbers I was seeing in my test as well The number one purpose for me in doing these test is to make sure I’m loading my skid steer properly when I get it It’s a lot shorter than the trailer but all the way at the max weight limit so if you don’t put it in the right spot you’re either overloading your truck or creating a dangerous towing situation Thanks for watching and commenting

After watching I think I 100% need to go 3500. The 2500 Cummins is just to little on the payload. I’ve seen 1970-2200 pounds. It’s just not enough for most of the things out there. My 2500 Hemi is 3163 and I definitely hit that at times. You sure the trucks allowed to steal weight from the trailer? Like legally allowed to steal it?

I would love to hear your thoughts about the B&W and the weigh safe hitch. I am trying to decide between the two and heard some negative things regarding the scale breaking. I only currently tow a 12 foot dump but plan on doing more. Nothing to your extent. Please share!

The dump trailer is currently the heaviest thing I pull They have a lifetime warranty on the scale working although I’m sure there is cost and hassle in getting it replaced if there is an issue. It does cost more than a quality B&W hitch but it’s not excessive. I figure I’ll be all right even if it fails at some point after I’ve really learned and established all my weights because it’s actually a good heavy duty hitch even without the scale function I’ve only used it on the truck one day but I would buy it again Thanks a lot for following the channel

We have less than 1% of reported gauge issues of the thousands of hitches we sell! Usually the issue comes from people overloading and towing a lot more than what the hitch is rated for. If for some reason your gauge does fail, we do have a lifetime warranty on the gauge mechanism itself! Any issue within 1 year of purchase, we cover shipping for the repair. Outside that 1 year, the customer is responsible for shipping (usually between $8-10 each way) but we still repair the gauge for free! Or, we can also send you a gauge repair kit and you can repair it by yourself! Please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions! :)

@@weighsafe thanks for the clarification. I am waiting for my Ram 2500 to arrive before I know what size drop size I should purchase for my dump trailer. Tell me about your locking pin assembly. I have one of those and that lock failed. When the lock no longer holds the pins in what does? Oh yes absolutely nothing. Threw my lock assembly away and put two grade eight bolts through the holes where the pins would go with locking nuts. Is it quick adjust? Not anymore. Can I take a chance of losing a trailer because a POS lock fails? No because I don't know where that trailer might go I don't know who it might hit so I'll deal with needing to carry two wrenches with me and spending more time to adjust the hitch. Other than that I have no complaints about the product!

You never mentioned gross axle weight rating. Even if you don’t exceed your GVWR or GCVWR, you might have too much weight on the rear axle since all of the trailer tongue weight will be on the rear axle.
@RockhillfarmYT
@RockhillfarmYT 2 года назад
Thanks for sharing I think I did talk about that. The rear axle is rated for 6400 pounds. The most payload I can add to the truck from the trailer is 1900 pounds. That should not be a problem even with weight shifting from the front to the rear when loaded

@RockhillfarmYT 2 года назад
Right, that is how it works, but it’s a little bit off because what I called the empty weight included me and anything else I happened to have in the truck Meaning I should actually only have a 1500 pound tongue weight to stay within specs I just received my weight distribution hitch to help with the pin wait on my dump trailer The listed payload is actually 1800 which is less than what I originally thought it was. After I ordered the truck I went on the Ram website and it shows you your specs based on your Vin number. It was originally showing me 2100 and then when the truck actually showed up and I checked the door it was lower

That's not how trailer weights work... LOL - You do NOT deduct the tong weight from the trailer rating. That weight is still on the bed of the trailer. You can go 10-15% on the truck with a bumper... Many times I go more, but thats me. You are much, much better off with more weight on the truck than not enough. With not enough weight on the truck the trailer wags the truck.
@RockhillfarmYT
@RockhillfarmYT 2 года назад
If the goal is to not exceed the weight ratings of your axles, then that is how it works. In terms of your tow capacity that’s definitely not how it works I’m not trying to tell you definitively right or wrong, but I am intrigued by the conversation. Here is how this plays out in some conversations I’ve had With guys who regularly haul with a dump trailer. My 14 K dump trailer weighs 4000 pounds and I always put 5 tons of rock in it. Several people have told me I could put 6 tons of rock in it and still be fine pulling across the cat scale, because you’re still going to get a 14,000 pound weight on the trailer Real question… Is DOT ever going to have you disconnect your trailer and weigh it separate from the tow vehicle? As far as being on the scale that weighs the axles and the trailer separately, The weight literally cannot be in 2 places. If 15% of the trailers weight is resting on the truck then there is 15% less weight on the trailer axles. 8000 pound truck. 4000 pound dump trailer. 10,000 pounds of rock. Combined it all weighs 22,000 pounds. By those numbers it sounds like the dump trailer weighs 14,000 pounds, and it does if it’s not hooked to anything However, If you go through the scales and 15% of that weight is resting on the truck as payload the dump trailer should weigh 12,600 pounds which is 14,000-1400. Your 8000 pound truck should now weigh 9400 pounds Meaning your trailer can actually weigh 16,470 Before it’s going to read 14,000 pounds on the scales. That’s why I’ve had some guys tell me I can put 6 tons instead 5 tons in my trailer. I’m guessing that’s why they offered to rate my trailer at 15,900 when it has 7000 pound axles? It seems like a trailer should not be able to be rated higher than the axle Ratings

I dont think tongue weight needs to be a %. it has a max number. dont exceed it. more tongue weight is better. better braking, better traction, better steering
@RockhillfarmYT
@RockhillfarmYT 9 месяцев назад
Lol, it’s definitely a percent. What you’re basically saying is just to estimate the percentage by having a general idea of how far forward the park. That works fine. There are negatives to having too much weight forward. 1500 pounds of tongue weight on a 3000 pound trailer is a too much. 1500 pounds tongue weight on a 20,000 pound trailer is not enough. You don’t have to have this gauge and make it exact. Like you’re saying you can just generalize and make sure there’s enough forward.

@@RockhillfarmYT I am an old trucker, hauled a lot of stuff. currently have an f550 that haul trailers every day, dump trailer tri axles equip trailer. % means nothing. load the tongue to suit your needs. too little and you will have issues. you making up an arbitrary % number and telling inexperienced people to shoot for that number is irresponsible. exactly what happens if I put 1500# of tongue on a 3000# load? I do this all the time. if my packer and buckets are on the triaxle and the machine is not. there is no downside.
