Why in the world are more women not taught these things way, way earlier like in our twenties? It's such a big, complicated issue that's so effects our entire lives and relationships and even our finances that I can't believe were not taught all about this monster called menopause at a much earlier stage of life. Thank you for everything you have researched and are educating others like myself. I really appreciate it!!!

I just sent this to someone today! Menopause is joked about, but nobody really tells you what to expect. By the time we realize we are in perimenopause, we are already through it and onto menopause. I’ve always had female gynecologist, and they discouraged me from hormone replacement. two years into menopause and five years of hot flashes and night sweats. I finally begged for horemones and switched doctors. Now to find out I should have been on hormones years ago.

The fat doesn’t redistribute- it gets added to the gut. I’m an RN and I’m 56 and no one taught me this which is really frustrating. I had to figure this out on my own with research. I should have an MD behind my BSN by now. I also think we become insulin RESISTANT YEARS BEFORE it shows on our glucose tests. I ride 50 + miles a DAY and am eating virtually nothing and am STILL gaining weight. No diet has helped me- NONE. It makes me mad that I actually had to tell my rheumatologist 4 times that I felt like I was insulin resistant and she argued with me that my labs were “normal.” I don’t think we need education- I think other PHYSICIANS need education. By the way, you look amazing for your age.

Take hormone replace therapy if you can. Find a menopause specialist, preferably from the North American Menopause Society and make an appointment, those are the best suited doctors to go to because they are educated in menopause. I used to have hot flashes and night sweats, brain fog and I gained weight (I still have to lose it and it's not easy) but I just started HRT and I am sooo happy with it because a lot of my symptoms are gone.

I feel like I gained all 25 lbs in my hips, thighs, and stomach - and I too don't feel like my body is my own. I'm 47, and in the past year have rapidly gained 27 lbs despite walking a minimum of 4 miles a day and maintaining a healthy vegetarian diet. I've always had a bit of a stress pot belly due to a rough childhood, but this past year the weight is piling on in my belly area, thighs, and hips. I look pregnant, and none of my clothes fit me anymore. It's sad and despite my efforts to walk more, lift weights, and eat strictly clean, I'm still gaining weight. People's comments about how my size has increased isn't helping. It's defeating. But it's consoling to know I'm not alone, so thanks to everyone out there for commenting.

I gained most of my excess weight long before menopause started ( had never been what you'd call slim), and between 2011 and 2021 ( menopause started and ended within this time, between the ages of about 52-56....I'm 60 now) I only gained another 10 lbs or so. 13 months ago I decided I'd had enough and since then have lost 77 lbs. Did nothing only stick rigidly to my once a day eating ( I always only ate in the evening anyway, but too much / too much snacking and alcohol as well), nothing after 7pm and no alcohol. I also cut out sugar to start with to give me a good start which in turn gave me the motivation to continue and not give up ( I do have some sugar now but not a lot). I realised that the late night eating and drinking had been the culprit. I also learned that what I'd been doing with the one actual meal a day idea ( for most of my adult life) is known as intermittent fasting, and has great benefits, and regarding weight loss plays a big role. I'd recommend trying it, for anyone struggling with weight loss, though I know it's not easy when you want and are used to 3 meals a day. I was 224 lbs and am now 147 lbs. Lost about 14 inches from around my middle ( found my waist again) and dropped my BMI from 42 to 29 ( so far)....this has taken me from being in the morbidly obese category to the overweight category. I want to drop about another 25 lbs ideally, as I'm only 5 ft tall, so all that fat on me looked even worse due to being short. Because of what I've achieved myself, I stopped believing that it's impossible for older women to lose weight.

OMG 😲 it's as if you are describing me. I was very active , ran 5k, 10k, 1/2 marathon ,Covid hit and the weight gain came on with a vengence. The enormous weight gain in my stomach, hips, buttocks, thighs, arms, back fat. Not to mention the hot flashes, loss of memory & strength is ridiculous. I've been weight training for 5 months but not much success. I'm sleep deprived, with severe hair loss, severe stiffness etc... I'm 55 years young, I look at my body and don't recognize it. I Feel as though my body has deserted me. Still going through hot flashes I believe I'm either full menopause . I did hormone replacement therapy for 2 years around 52, to help with the hot flashes as I was having about 20-30 daily.Help...

One huge factor I haven't heard you comment on is that exercise is a SMALL portion of what we expend calories on in a day. Movement in the entire day is what most calories are spent on, walking, cleaning your house, fidgeting, running errands etc. When you don't feel well and even if you don't sleep well studies show you will automatically decrease your activity level significantly in the day even if you do your exercise. Similarly days people have really really hard workouts this happens as well. Unless they are aware they typically will automatically decrease other movement in the day. This is why there is weight gain related to poor sleep. In the case with menopause if you feel off and not well your activity level through the day will decrease. Also most people as they age their activity level drops off and they sit more. There have been studies supporting this information. I agree the quality of the food matters but calories matter as does overall activity level throughout the day as well.

I am now post-menopausal. These are the things that helped me with the symptoms of menopause. Drink more water - at least two litres a day. Dehydration is associated with increased anxiety ( also a menopausal symptom) I started to take vitamin D to protect me from Covid, and my night sweats decreased ( low vitamin D is linked to excess sweating) I was overweight before menopause, and I have finally lost weight by following a keto diet and doing IF ( intermittent fasting 16-8). I was a UK size 24, and I am now a size 16, so I have still some way to go. I have also been doing a RU-vid cardio workout every day, increasing my heart rate. I tried Slimfast shakes, walking miles a day - it didn't work. If you eat carbs and sugar, you crave more carbs and sugar. 16-8 IF is easy as you can sleep through most of it! It works! Try it! Oh, and I am not on HRT.

I totally agree. 16-8 IF entirely removed my peri-menopausal symptoms (hot sweats, head aches, generally bad PMS, cystic chin acne and weight gain). So long as I continue on that path I am symptom free. Weight loss has been slow, however, my main drive to try something new was the symptoms. I don't follow keto and I don't get out everyday for exercise so I'm sure this would improve further when I change these factors.

@@samanthathompson9812 I probably didn’t make it clear that I am intermittent fasting for 20 hours a day. But at dinner I really eat a lot. I cook a crockpot full of beans and greens every few nights seasoned with salsa or spaghetti sauce, bullion, cayenne pepper and black pepper. Along with that I have a large portion of corn chips and some sort of dessert, usually chocolate. I imagine I eat about 15 hundred calories a day, but I rarely exercise…I’m just lazy. I’m 42 and am still in the throes of normal periods so any regimens I’ve done up to this point for weight maintenance may not work for those already going through menopause and beyond. One thing I have been doing for years is be VERY observant of my body’s response to food, eating schedule, and exercise. This is how I know when I need to change something up. The biggest change came with muscle loss at 41, even though it was subtle. I only notice it because my clothes were a little looser in certain places but not better fitting. I also hurt a lot - Muscle loss can be painful. I started weight training (I had never done much of that before, but I was exercising) and it took months and a lot of miserable soreness before I began to notice a change in how I looked and felt. The seemingly rapid muscle loss took me by surprise. My plan is to continue with maintaining muscle tone (I’ve never been muscular, but at least I can tone), eat as healthy and balanced as possible, keep stress low, (HAHA), and utilize intermittent fasting as that has helped me with maintaining a leaner belly in the past when I needed it. Intermittent fasting only seems to work for me by eating my last meal at 3-4 PM and then a light breakfast at 8-9 pm the next day. It doesn’t work for me to not eat breakfast. With exception of one year in my early twenties, (long story) I’ve never been overweight, but I have fluctuated towards the lower and upper range of my supposed normal body weight. I truly believe knowing your body and being cognizant of any changes early on, will help tackle any issues. I’m hopeful that maintaining muscle tone will help minimize that belly weight during menopause.

I've been maintaining the last two years but really need 20 of those pounds off to feel better. Energy levels are the biggest challenge. All my energy goes into working and nothing is left to work out. I'm super sensitive to testosterone and have to be careful because the pellets made me estrogen dominant with testosterone converting to more estrogen. I had to have a D&C due to postmenopausal bleeding. Now I use creams so I can control it and dose it according to symptoms. Most of my fat is in my hips, thighs, and boobs. @realdeal8505
@realdeal8505 2 года назад
@@margaretsmith1385 Synthetic hormones such as progestin (progesterone) and Cenestin (estrogens) are made from things like horses urine and other chemicals, which aren’t normal to the human body. They’re one size fits all pharmaceutical remedies. And synthetics just mask the symptoms they don’t actually replace what you, Margaret are missing. Bio Identical hormones are made from natural plant compounds that are to YOUR biology, no one else’s. Blood tests determine what you are missing. What I am missing may be different from you and so on. A physician or naturopathic Dr. (most medical Drs aren’t taught this way to be honest), will order them through a compounding pharmacy which makes them for you. They can be pellet, troche (lozenges), cream forms, etc. First heard of them from a friend who had to have a complete hysterectomy which thrust her straight into menopause at 42. She told me about them. I’ve been taking them ever since, feel great and that was at age 48. When we lose our hormones that’s when illnesses and disease can set in amongst other things. There are several books written about them, but the first ones I read were, The Sexy Years, Discover the Hormone Connection & Ageless, The Naked Truth About Bio Identical Hormones. Both By Suzanne Sommers in collaboration with curing edge doctors who have been trained in Bio Hormones.

I started menopause at 40 and was also hyperthyroidism, always thin. By 47 I was completely postmenopausal and gained 15 lbs. All in my belly, people said I looked 9 months pregnant. I then had pre-diabetes same year. Since childhood I have no appetite, eat one meal a day, dinner. The 15 lbs wasn't too bad. The following year I went from hyper to hypothyroid in six months and gained an additional sixteen lbs ! Endocrinologist did blood cortisol and saliva cortisol, both below the range ! I am 53 and have been fasting for 5 years, only eat vegetables and occasional chicken at p.m. I've lost nothing. My doctor said because I had a testosterone level in the 300s, was hyperthyroidism and never ate much, that going through early menopause, testosterone nothing, going hypothyroid from hyper that my body is used to just having a dinner meal that I went from extremely fast metabolism to none. I do 3 day fasts once a month, just black coffee and water, I lose nothing. I have never had an appetite, fasting is easy for me, but I just got a tip that I should do dry fasting, no water 3 days, and fast with no food for 30 days. BTW I went 5 years postmenopausal without hormones, finally started estrogen one year ago, absolutely no change.

Sounds like your endo is blaming you, and the endo is not treating your hypothyroidism correctly. If they only test and fixate on TSH, you aren’t being treated right. Hi, me again. What I didn't mention in my post two years ago (I'm 20 years alcohol-free now), is that I was on bioidentical hormones for 11 years. They were a godsend. I had great energy and much less visceral fat than now. Two months after my dad died (7 years ago; I was 62), my doctor shut down my refills, saying I was too old and risking heart disease and cancer if I continued. It was like being hurled off a cliff. I get tired SO easily, and have so much less energy for the activities I still love, which keeps my weight up too. I've just found an integrative medical doctor who is looking into my returning on the customized estradiol, progesterone and testosterone bio-identical topical I was on those 11 years. I pray she'll find I'm a good risk. I'm eating low-carb, am staying below 170 and am told I have exceptional muscle (I work with stone in building). I yearn to have my life back.

Oh my gosh! I am almost 50, at 41 I got in the best shape of my life, competed in Figure competition, then did it again at 45. Then along came selling a house, COVID pandemic, building house and moving to a rural area. Add menopause and weight gain, minimal lifestyle changes not only have zero impact, but body fat percentage/ weight is increasing ! Here’s the thing: exactly as you just said, I don’t remember my fat feeling this “hard”. Instinctively, my first thought was changing from sub cutaneous to visceral!

Thank you!!! I knew something was wrong when I seemingly gained 15lbs overnight! I have always been fairly thin, active, and eat very healthy(especially since I am on a some what restrictive diet due to suffering from Crohns, Celiacs, and Methane based SIBO). Most of the weight was in my stomach and hips, which I have NEVER had an issue with. It took a year for the docs to finally take me seriously and additional peri symptoms started to rear their ugly head before the docs took a closer look/tests and finally diagnosed me as being in peri-menopause. So, now I eat a a calorie deficit, just to maintain my weight and try to not gain anymore weight. I am still far from being obese, but when you gain 2 lbs from eating the daily recommended calories for a woman my age and activity level, you adjust things. Still my doctor says my symptoms are just things I have to deal with, to include the weight gain.

At 53 I still have regular periods, but I know my time is coming. I currently find walking, step aerobics and occasionally doing intermittent fasting (just eating 2 meals a day) or making morning and evening dinners light (e.g. simple salads with vinegar and oil dressing), with most calories consumed around 1 or 2 p.m. is working well for me. My mother is in her 70s and is still thin. She walks, rides a stationary bike and eats light meals 3 times a day. A friend's mother in her 80s is thin and walks and eats 2 light meals and one heavier one. What works for them/me is consciously looking at portions, eating on a salad plate instead of dinner plate, not having second helpings, getting proper sleep, limiting alcohol, including dairy in diet, only eating a few nuts, fruit or vegetables if having a snack (no potato chips or other high carb/fat snacks whatsoever) and eating more things like lentils, chickpeas, tofu, fish, eggs and lamb. (trimmed of fat) in addition to fruit (esp. berries) and vegetables. A treat of a piece of cake, pie, or a waffle on weekends or special occasions is perfectly fine.

Perhaps, genetically speaking we have escaped what most are dealing with but I do wonder if the price to pay is osteoporosis. The chemo killed more than cancer. I never had another period again. After a year of immunotherapy, I was recovering from the treatment. Six months later a donut of fat appeared around my belly button and I have struggled ever since. I didn’t get to pass GO and collect $200. It was straight to menopause jail. At that stage, I weighed 130ish. And, my family dealt with constant hospital visits, as my granddaughter came down with neuroblastoma - stage 4. Weight gain, from stress, put on twenty more pounds. Fortunately ATM, she is in remission. Now overweight, I've been trying everything to lose the extra poundage. I'll keep working on it. So far I've made progress, but that component -- and the fear of relapse - hangs over us.

I couldn't believe how I felt so betrayed by my body. When I went to my doctor at the Veterans hospital, she told me to stop bitching about my weight b/c it happens as we get older...smh. I dropped her, started intermittent fasting, strength training etc. I lost 20lbs but now i feel stuck....Needless to say, im glad I found your channel. THANK YOU A MILLION TIMES OVER....SUBSCRIBED!!!

I've subscribed to the Galveston diet. Started reading about the program hoping to learn more about eating with hormonal imbalance but instead it was about intermittent fasting. I am a fitness instructor and can't fast before teaching. So I was very disappointed and haven't continued to with my reading.

Intermittent fasting is only one of the components of the program. We do have a 30 day guarantee if you are not completely satisfied! Email drhaver@galvestondiet.com and we will manage that for you.
