Weighted Walking, Rucking or Tabbing is a phenomenal way to improve all aspects of your fitness.
You can use a Ruck sack, standard Backpack, or a Weighted Vest.
I use both, but I prefer the Weighted Vest.
I think of the Weighted Vest as the Swiss Army Knife of fitness equipment.
In this video, I show you my opinions on both options, the effect of rucking on your fitness and how to walk with weight, but without injury in barefoot shoes.

Last winter I was volunteering on an organic farm, where I helped out with the construction of some terracing. Moved stones with a wheelbarrow for weeks, loads of up to about 100 kgs, just for two hours per day because that shit was heavy. Amazing workout. Where a backpack or weighted vest mainly impact core and leg muscles, a wheelbarrow also requires a lot from your torso and arms, even more so in rugged or hilly terrain. Torso and arms blew up like crazy, especially my deltoids and forearms. Never wore a coat even though it was often under 5 celsius, generated all the heat I needed myself, and I lost several kgs that month while eating a lot more than normal. I guess what I'm saying is , if you want to get ripped, find yourself some land to scape :P

I used to weigh 270 lbs in 2021. I could barely walk 2.5 miles without struggling. I've been rucking since then, 5-6 days a week with 30-75 lbs for distances between 2.5 and 20 miles. I've lost 70 lbs and have a resting heart of 39 BPM, my blood pressure is normal - below normal and I have more energy than I could ever imagine. I can average 12-14 minute/mile pace with 30-45 pounds all day long. The only issues I've had with rucking 5-6 days a week for two years are stress fractures and slight knee pain. I can continue working out through minor injuries but the more severe injuries have kept me away from trails for no more than 7-10 days. Pay attention to what is said around the 8:00 mark and beyond about your gait and footstrikes. Take short, choppy steps and keep your CG over your feet. When you take long, leisurely strides you are asking for injuries. As he stated, the heel striking is a BIG NO-NO!!!

I studied exercise science in college and was personal trainer for about a decade. This is great advice, one of the things that made me frustrated about fitness is the industry makes it unnecessarily complicated so people would buy the things. This is simple, effective, almost anyone can do it, almost everyone would benefit. Easy to increase or decrease load. I am going start adding this to my routine, I herniated a disk few years ago and running can irritate my L5 sometimes. This would be good to do in place of running 1-2 a week to reduce impact.

One of the best videos I have seen that explains weighted walking. Very clear, great detail. Love that you included the suggestion not to increase any variable (weight, time, distance) more than 10% per week. I read that in a book about running a while back. It also mentioned that you should back off every 3 weeks (studies found that injuries were highest in the 3rd week and multiples of 3 in a training program). I purchased a vest that came with empty packs. You can fill them up with anything. I found BB's to give the most weight for the volume. I can get my vest up to 100 pounds by adding packs from an old 40 lb vest that was tearing apart. Tried walking with 80 lbs once. It was too much for my joints. Went down to 60 lbs and it was manageable, but still felt too much pressure in my joints. With both 80 & 60 lbs I felt a little uneasy about my back. So, I dropped it to 40 lbs. Thanks for the recommendation of adding no more than 25% of your body weight. You also mentioned something I had not heard before, but found to be consistent with my experience. Getting outside of Zone 2 makes you require more food for recovery. When I do more difficult cardio, I want to eat more, usually negating the work that I did. So, thanks for that too. Only recently discovered your channel. I have found it very informative thus far.

Just note on wearing boots - ya most of us did hate it, but it supported our ankles when walking on uneven terrain. If you're walking/shuffling on trails that aren't immaculately maintained, you might want to consider it, because I can't imagine anything worse than twisting an ankle w/ 40+ lbs of additional downward pressure. That said, if you're walking on very well maintained trails or on pavement, barefoot shoes all the way.
@GrownandHealthy
@GrownandHealthy Год назад
I personally have never rolled/sprained my ankle with a forefoot landing. The elevated heel demands landing heel first, which leaves the ankle susceptible to shifting before the remaining foot lands. Landing forefoot loads the ankle appropriately (*jump rope) This is why great athletes cuts from the forefoot, while the injured, pivots on the heel.

I know you are a barefoot shoe enthusiast, as am I. What do you think about GORUCK's stance that a heel-toe drop is necessary, especially when adding weight to your frame? They talk about injuries related to zero drop shoes, plantar fasciitis and such from not supporting your foot's 3 arches. I used to wakeup in the morning and experience what I assume was plantar fasciitis, but looking back, I am pretty sure that was when I was still wearing a traditional running shoe. I have been exclusively wearing barefoot shoes for several years now and have not had any pain in my feet like that.

Thanks for the video. I am thinking of getting a vest that can go up to 60 pounds. I currently weigh around 185. normally walk around 4 miles 3 to 4 times a week. do I need to work up to the 60 pounds for my current weight? I am 5'10. or should i just get the 40. I am thinking what if i want to do more and now i have to buy another vest. lol. might as well get the one with a highest weight option.

This is great but even after a good 5 or 6 days a week of walking and hour a day you may get about a pound of extra caloric burn and not all fat so if people aren’t paying close attention to their diets they may gain a higher level of fitness but not necessarily lose weight. I try to cycle 60 to 90 minutes a day, sometimes longer on the weekends, and this gets me around 800 to 1200 calories burned a day which will usually always put me in a caloric deficit.

For someone like me who has walked between 8-12 miles daily for years and who is also 45 or so lbs lighter than he used to be but saw no injury from that walking with normal shoes I am trying to understand why I would need to switch to toe shoes to prevent injury with a weighted vest? I used to to wear five fingers and that variety and I always ended up having some type of knee issue with them which eventually went away when I switched to normal shoes. Just curious why this is a requirement.

I used to walk a lot but it takes up so much time, as uni became more demanding and it became more stressful, I have started rucking to get the same or even a better benefit and have the time I need for school. I still walk as well if I can but worked my way up to 25kg in my backpack, weight vests would be great, I feel the backpack on my shoulders and the weight digging into my back is painful sometimes but vests are way too expensive

Nothing has given me the most return for such a small effort. Rucking (or tabbing as we call it in the UK) helped me after the getting ill from the "flu" to build my aerobic base. Would also recommend using a Garmin or something to monitor heart rate. As always excellent information.

There is a long transition to barefoot shoes too. If you've never worn them, you have to start with short distances. You have to strengthen your leg/ankle/foot mechanics to barefoot shoes. Lots of people throw them on, go hard, and that leads to strain and injuries. I'm not a fan of barefoot shoes. I like to ruck in hiking boots with ankle support, I also ruck on hilly dirt/rocky trails. To each their own, good luck people, rucking is awesome!

So if you're 62 and carry a 40lb ruck through the woods walking your dogs roughly 2 hours a day plus the gear in my pants weighs 15lb. This would help keep my bone density? And i am 5 feet 8 inches and weigh 160. So how good is this on a scale of 1 to 10 for me? Oh I admit i was in the Infantry 22 years

Started Weighted vest Incline Walking a few weeks ago and I love it. I use 20 kg for my vest (EZ vest, it's plate loaded so you can decrease or increase as you wish). I started at 5 km/h (it's rather brisk Walking IMO) and a 10 Incline for 20 Minutes, progressing 2 minutes every Workout, doing this once per week. When I'm at 30 Minutes, i'll add 5 kg and repeat the process and so in (arbitrary Goal is to do it with 30 kg for 30 Minutes).

Rucking alone will not help to build muscle.. but if you have a vest, you can incorporate it into calisthenic exercises that will be more effective building muscle.

If you're over 50 I'd be careful with rucking as it might cause disc compression...best to ask your chiro about this before you proceed.
@RMJ1984
@RMJ1984 Год назад
Remember there is nothing wrong with using a backpack, you just gotta have a proper backpack and work your way up slowly. Back in the soldier days we were expected to carry up to 45% of body weight fully loaded on long marches upwards of 50 km and after that you must still be able to fight and not fall asleep. Benefit of backpack is also you have resources with you, you need water and foot anyways. Humans have a tendency to over complicate stuff, which is a trend i'm not a big fan of.
