This video is not a substitute for a proper freediving course. I am not an instructor, however this video covers freediving weighting to the best of my knowledge. Your freediving instructor knows best, listen to him/her.
Anyway, moving on...
The video focus on how to weight yourself for freediving - You can use this video as a general advice to weight yourself.
I cover 2 popular rules of weighting for freediving. The "10 meter rule" is this is by far the simplest. However the 1/3 rules is slightly more optimized to allow a diver to maximize their kicking and freefall, etc.
At the end of the video, I cover how to wear your weight-belt. Please dont miss that part, as it is important.
Finally, if you are not wearing a wetsuit - please do not wear any weight. If you do, you will find yourself unable to float comfortably on the surface... and carrying lead up from deep down without a wet suit to counter it will be exhausting and possibly dangerous.

For figuring out your neutral buoyancy, you could just put the weights on the rope at 10meters and than just picking them up until you are floating...In that case you dont have to get up on a surface every time...just a thought

i was planning on using all of your techniques and this video for spearfishing in the Florida keys this December and now that you have stated in this video that spear fishermen should not use this technique i am not sure if i should also use the breath up technique? the water will be max ten meters i think maybe more.

What do you think about the chest harness weights systems?
@freediverhd

Good question. Yes, i have a neck weight for Dynamic training. There is no 'golden' ratio as it depends on the individual - so Instead of answering your question directly - I going to say - get your friend to check your position in the pool - add/remove weight until you are perfectly neutrally buoyant and float perfect horizontally. BTW - This is for the pool only, right? There is no way i would consider using a neck weight in the ocean.

Hi, thanks for this! I'm wondering, is it better to use light weights or heavy weights to reach the target weight? For example, if I want 14 lbs, is it better to use 2s and 1s to reach that or 5s and 2s?
@dr.s.p.
@dr.s.p. 4 года назад
Most of the folk I know and are still being taught to use the 2/3 rule (two thirds) to be neutrally buoyant, not 1/3. I guess this only shows it’s where you learnt and your preferences.

Yeah, i have one, for the rare occasion that I get to train in the pool. But this is not something I am focusing on. I actually made a video on "how to make a neck weight" but it came out very shaky (this those first extremely low quality gear review videos i did)
@JohnTolentino
@JohnTolentino 11 лет назад
Yeah. Been using it in the pool. Was about to ask if you would use it in open water because I've seen it used by others in videos. Although it's a snug fit, not sure if it's a good idea to wear when doing CWT. Just to make sure about the reasons I have to ask, why wouldn't you wear it in the ocean? Not even for fun dives?

where can you buy the weights from i can find places to buy the belt but not the weights
@JohnTolentino
@JohnTolentino 11 лет назад
do you use neck weights? if so, what ratio do you use for neck and belt weights?
@freediverhd
@freediverhd 11 лет назад
The other way around. You will be positive at the surface, then as you dive down, the air in your lungs and wetsuit compresses, which makes you loose buoyancy, at a certain point you will become neutral, deeper beyond that point you will become negative and start to sink.

What if you ever realise you might not make it to the surface, why don't you drop the belt? Isn't there supposed to be an emergency release? Love your vids btw :)

Please, I need your opinion on types of belt buckles which are beter: marseile or US. On internet forums I found that someone said the marseile type is a golden rule and it iks beter and will survive years when is kept in good conditions. Sorry for my english. I trying improve it. Of course swimming with the weight belt I want start in the pool. I want to test how my body will behave and difference in swiming.

I'm beginning on freediving. I know that I should test and adjust it to my neutral bouyancy point at depth on 10 meters. But for now I don't want to buy more weight cubes then 3 x 1.2 kg (=3,6kg) and spend my money for more.I want to put two on my hips (1 cube for each side) and one on my back if nesesserry. Is it sounds reasonable for the beginning? I have a short wet suit 3mm thick. My body weight is 84/85kg.

@freediverhd 11 лет назад
Hi Deepening, I put a note in the description of the video about this. If you are not wearing a wetsuit - please do not wear any weight. If you do, you will find yourself unable to float comfortably on the surface... and carrying lead up from deep down without a wet suit to counter it will be exhausting and possibly dangerous.

hey i just saw your comment there about the wetsuit thickness, etc. Just send me a message on FB, ill chat to you there. I head over to Okinawa some times, so stay in touch. Otherwise if you want a short answer, a 3mm is more than enough for Okinawa, even in winter. In the peak summer months (now even) no wetsuit is required. Definitely do not get a 5mm for Oki, thats just out of the question.
@freediverhd
@freediverhd 11 лет назад
If there was simply a chart which said X amount of body weight equals X amount of lead, we could all just use this method - but there isn't! You need to follow the method in the video exactly ( I know the video is a bit long and boring ) However I assume you might fall somewhere between 1.5 to 3.5 kg's of lead depending on your wetsuit.

Freediver HD : I have never dived before, and I have always feared going into the sea. And I want to overcome that and found free diving to be very attractive. When I searched the net for local free diving lessons, they say that we need to have some lessons at the swimming pool before going to the sea. Is this how you have learnt free diving also? Where did you start from when you first learnt to freedive? Thanks! Love your videos :)

Personally, I find it exhausting to have something around my neck. Water easier to go into your snorkel while face down, cause Ur head is floating slightly slower. No benefit, as no need to float horizontal. Dropping over your chin when swimming down. moving around during the dive. The whole safety idea quick release weight belts and 'dropping your weight belt' is probably not possible. etc etc etc
@freediverhd
@freediverhd 11 лет назад
gage, i dont think I can answer this question. There is nothing special you need to do, you just need to get through it. Just keep your mouth closed and bare it!

Besides moving slower whats the advantage of freediving from using an oxygen tank. Because this is dangerous
@wuzihuzi

It's quieter, feels freer. It's actually relatively safe when done with someone and with proper instruction just like scuba. Never dive alone.

Hi, do you have any experience with weight vests? I'm about to buy one but I can't find any with weight pockets on the front. I fear that when I turn sideways to look under rocks for fish my body will flip upside down due to the weight only being on my back. Is this a common problem? Or am I worrying about nothing? Thx and love all your videos. Keep up the good work.

You won't have nearly enough weight on you to hold you down like that

***** I wear a 5mm suit with hood and definitely need a weight vest. I just bought the Sporasub quick release. I was disappointed to find that It has absolutely no method for size adjustment. It came with stitching on the weight pockets so only the expensive small flat Sporasub weights will fit. However, I removed the stitching to allow for standard pearl lead weights. The weights bump my shoulder blades and are not well placed for comfort. Unfortunately I saw no other commercially available vests that were much better than this one. I'll let you guys know how things go once I've worn it in the water for a couple months.

+Caleb Bryant Whilst it's a dick move to ensure that only their expensive weights will fit in, the reason you found the vest uncomfortable was because you modified it.
