Soprano Rebecca Vanover performs in the Gildenhorn Recital Hall in the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD on March 8, 2014. Accompanied by Milena Gligic, piano.
Beautiful spinning soprano and wonderful that there was humor and charm in your interpretation. It’s generally sung wistfully, your’s was hopeful which was a great choice!
Lovely rendition ~ ~ ~ it's difficult to bring forward old songs like this one out of context from the whole production---but your voice carries it off beautifully!
When Lady in the Dark opened on Broadway it was before the days of recording complete musicals but then the show was really a play with music. RCA issued a three 10" 78's and featured the star Gertrude Lawrence. She was really a "diseuse" since her voice as captured on those 78's seemed frail but they oozed charm and style; many years later Columbia issued a recording of the show with Rise Steven post Met career and included music that had never been recorded. But the original made a star out of Danny Kaye and without him and Lawrence the recording seemed flat. My Ship is a lovely song and is one that cabaret artists should sing; it needs to be sung simply and without "interpretation". Ms Vanover sings it beautifully but the venue does the piano no favors. It is too bad that Broadway doesn't have musicals (unless they are revivals) that require the talents she has.
