In the US the Quill stylus was a Club Nintendo reward that you could get for free when you registered your copy of Phantom Hourglass. It didn't come in the rupee case though, just a small nondescript box. I got both that and the rainbow set back in the day!
Jealous as hell. I think expecting more from it than being a cute charging dock is the wrong way to look at it. It's a neat place to store your dsi and make sure it's fully charged when you need it and it looks adorable.
They actually had the same quill stylus as a Nintendo reward thing for Phantom Hourglass too. I remember ordering it and being so excited when it arrived! It was pretty cool and then I lost it like kids do. Glad to see it was also available in some other way.
The bendy stylus would have been really great for people with motor issues like dysgraphia. Some people have more success with fingertip pens than traditional ones. The stylus is very thin and would be really hard to hold.
I loved the Comfort Stylus back in the day,it was super handy for games that had you go back and forth between using the touch screen and buttons. The rubber on the case that came with it definitely degraded horribly over time. It was fine when the product was new,but it's clear that it wasn't made to last. It actually doesn't take much effort to clean off the excess rubber though, and without that grossness it is still a nice case.
I wonder if that quill stylus and banana stylus would be more comfortable for left-handed people. We tend to hold the writing utensils more upright, so the curve probably wouldn't affect us so much. Though... Personally I can't imagine the curve being exactly ideal at all for either hand.
Don't throw that DS-style game case. Just put it into the box and keep it as collectors item - it's certainly interesting.. :) And you don't have to use it, it can stay in the box.
I had the bendable comfort stylus and loved it. It was nice not having to pick it up and put it down repeatedly for games that don't need it all the time.
Regarding the Rumble Pak, that vibrator is called a Linear Resonance Actuation motor, they're pretty common for slim applications, such as phones, as you mentioned. The joy-cons also use LRAs as far as I know they just have that black magic hd rumble thing.
The key ring seems like a good idea, if only it was designed to make stylus more ergonomic for drawing, I really like the art academy games for 3ds and would definitely buy something like a pencil feel stylus
With those styrofoam Club Nintendo DS card holders you can carefully cut off the top right corner of the styrofoam from each of the card holes to make them compatible with 3DS games too. :)
I was lucky enough to get a Comfort Stylus directly from the company for free/a couple dollars shipping when they first launched. I think they did a promo on the Nintendo forums or something. It was amazing for Metroid Prime Hunters and other shooters where the stylus served as an aiming stick. Wrap that thing around your thumb and you have a very useable surrogate thumbstick. It was so good I bought the set you unboxed to get an extra one and you're right, the game case was amazing back in the day.
I remember seeing that bendy stylus back in the day, but I never felt a desire to have one. Not only was it weird-looking, it felt like it'd be impossible to keep with you in your pocket.
I'm not sure if anyone I know has this, but in one of those DS accessory packs I got a white claw looking stylus included with it. Its kind of hard to wear now as an adult, but its definitely one of my more unique items in my collection!
I had the comfort stylus, they were sold in the US during the 3DS era as well I believe. Was absolutely necessary to not kill my hand playing Kid Icarus lol.
I really want to know how the comfort stylus holds up against the pokemon ranger games (particularly the first one), i imagine it's one of several games that tended to result in a scratched screen after playing it due to the nature of what it required. I can't imagine something like that actually keeping it's form in the hands of a young person using the stylus so intensely lol.
Isn't Ranger that pokegame that JaidenAnimations made a video on, the one where you lariat Pokemon with friendship laser lassos instead of making them cockfight?
wow memory unlocked with that flexible fingertip stylus I used to have that!! it was a pretty fun novelty, and actually came in handy for longer play sessions when my hand started to cramp up from holding the thin/long stylus normally used.
A few games can use the Rumble Pak. Mine came with Metroid Pinball. I often used it for multiplayer 42 All Time Classics; it would vibrate to alert you on your turn, which was handy if I got distracted by something shiny... Oooh, shiny... Where was I? ... Oh yes. Compatible games had the same logo (like coils either side of a DS), as you'd discovered, marked on the back of the game cases. I wonder if the wrap around stylus would be handy on the left thumb for games like Metroid Prime Hunters and the catchily named Super Mario 64 DS. As a right handed person I find the left hand stylus controls to be awkward, especially with the action buttons on the right. Do the Japanese hold pens and quills differently from the western cultures? Maybe the curved design has a benefit to them? I know they are very specific how they write their hirigana/katakana/kanji characters (Japanese letters). Just a thought.
I want to say Metroid Pinball had a rumble pak with it. THOUGH, I think that was FULL GBA sized. I can't remember it's been so many years since I had that game.
@@ToxoRetro Okay, thanks, I couldn't remember since I gave up the DS for a PSP and don't regret that decision, even the 3DS has such a low pixel count it's really hard to play.
No worries@@tdata545. 😁👍 I fully understand bud. In fairness, I think visually 2D games don't age as badly as 3D ones do. I'm blessed, touch wood quick, to have healthy "20/20" eyesight. Yet if the "camera" spins a lot it can tire my brain out on lower quality pictures. Games that particularly spring to mind are Ridge Racers 1 & 2 on the PSP (I can handle about an hour at a time), Doom (any version) and Metroid Prime Hunters on the DS - the latter two I simply find unplayable.
I would have killed to get that rumble pack for my lite back then, I got the bigger one meant for the original DS and it does add an interesting aspect to (surprisingly a lot of) my games.
I used the hell out of that bendy stylus playing Metroid. I would bend it around my thumb to play and it made the game really fun to play. A great accessory to have that worked surprisingly well. I would get unlicensed ones from ebay by the pack because I lost mine a couple of times or the bendyness would give out. Great video.
I used to use something similar to that bendable finger stylus with my DS. You can get these small styluses that strap to your fingertip. The stylus part was only very small and I don't think they were official, but I found myself using them a lot. Also, the case could probably be coated in something or just kept as a collector's item. A more involved solution would be to measure and 3D print one or use it to make a mold.
The quill stylus was a Club Nintendo reward! I missed out on that one, but I went back and bought it for my playthrough on stream! I also owned that flexible stylus! Mine came with a came card case!
I have that bendy stylus case combo, I got it from gamestop back in the day. I cant quite remember where it is but I remember seeing it a few years ago and the rubbery part was fine still. Of course theres a lot of factors at play for how this stuff ages, like mine was inside my little ds backpack so it was out of the sun. It's also the white one so it could be a different rubber compound than the black, who knows for sure
To get rid of that rubber coating, soak in warm water with baking soda and start scrubbing. Gets rid of that awful coating very easily and it's better than using rubbing alcohol/acetone.
Where I lived the comfortstylus was common and we called it a worm stylus. I thought they were made by the same company who did worm lights because the SP destroyed their business. Just snip the light and the connector off of a worm light and glue a nib onto it, and you've got yourself a nintendo accessory for the new age. Thanks for digging that ancient memory out of my head.
The DS holder would be great to use with games that heavily utilize stylus controls. Games like Phantom Hourglass, Kid Icarus Uprising (if it also fits the 3DS), and other such games.
I remember wanting that Zelda Clear Stylus Pen so badly. Glad I didn't pay the inflated price on it lol. Also, you can try and scrub off the sticky rubber and see if it will work without that sticky layer.
I remember when those character styluses came out! My Grandpa bought me one for my birthday one year. If my memory serves me correctly in addition to the DK one there was also a yoshi one and a Mario one as well and I’m sure a few others
The only good alternative stylus input method for games is the thumb numb that was bundled with the US release of the DS as part of the lanyard strap. Those things are not only rare, but worth a decent price. Unfortunately, nobody knew what they were for or why they were there. But they made FPS aiming input almost flawless using the touchscreen like a joystick.
I think they were recommended for the mario 64 remake. It showed in the instructions that it was one recommended way to control mario. I lost mine or didn't have one and had to make my own.
4:57 Yes. You wear it on one finger so you can switch from controller grip to touch without having to pull out the stylus. It's actually not too bad to use for gameplay, imagine using your knuckle to tap rather than your finger tip.
probably a bit late for this but i have been able to successfully recover products from rubber reversion by wiping all of it with acetone wipes. you can just pour some nail polish remover on a disposable textile wipe and do this instead, but do make sure to discard wipes often and only use them in a certain area so as to not spread the dissolved rubber onto more of the surface. after you're done, and if the plastic behind the rubber is any solid, you can polish it with some mineral oil to remove streaks and make it presentable again.
I have Metroid Pinball with the rumble pack. They were sold as a set in the US. Theoretically if you ran the ROM for that game through an SD card it would recognize and use the rumble feature.
that tiny Nintendo DS made me scream I love it so much also, I have the original DS rumble pack, it came with my copy of Actionloop, which made extensive use of it. Clubhouse Games also made it vibrate when it was your turn to play
I have that Club Nintendo stylus set. I'm not sure why I decided to get it; I probably had some points getting ready to expire and that was the only thing to spend it on. The styluses are a lot nicer than the factory ones, at least, and it was nice being able to customize it a little. I was definitely tempted by the quill stylus but having no way to actually store it in the console itself made it seem pointless to me, and I hadn't even considered how hard it'd be to hold. I think I got one for free with Phantom Hourglass but I never actually used it and I have no idea where it even is (if I indeed even got it).
I absolutely had that god-awful rubbery cartridge case as a kid. Even before the rubber started to go it was never very good; the carts would just fall out of their slots.
The key ring/stylus holder looks like it's meant to allow the user to switch between using the stylus and playing with the ABXY buttons and R trigger without awkwardly holding the stylus between your thumb and the DS. Probably wouldn't be very comfortable, though, seeing how thick it is.
3:05 man as a left handed person that kind of stylus holder would make playing games so much easier its so uncomfortable holding the stylus while using the joycon
Ahh, that green rupee stylus was originally a special Club Nintendo item you could get in exchange for filling out a very in-depth survey for the previous game Phantom Hourglass. Said game's stats at release weren't satisfactory for them, so they begun market research; the special feather stylus was the bait they offered to get data for that research. It's interesting to see that they had enough overstock to sell them; at the time I had filled out my survey they made it out to be a super limited run item, but as I expected, that was simply an incentive to get data ASAP. Oh well. Anyway, the packaging the original came in was much less impressive, it was a fitted foam insert like yours, but within a sleeved cardboard box decorated with Phantom Hourglass illustrations and an overworld map pattern. Bummer that the original issued items didn't have that awesome rupee case, it would make it much nicer to display.
I loved that stylus. I had on top of my finger because I hated using my finger nail for the touch screen. I had positioned so I could still use the R button but I could still tap the screen.
I have that Animal Crossing game case/stylus collection (literally here on the desk next to me), I got it directly from Club Nintendo back when it was originally available.
oh, is that quill is the Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks Quill Stylus with a green rube case, nice find. Nintendo DS Collector's Edition Donkey Kong Character Banana Stylus, that rubber you can get remade in 3D to fit that case
Hey, I found this video by a push notification on my phone as suggested. Never heard of you but I'm your newest subscriber. The RU-vid gods blessed me today. Looking forward to watching you in the new year!
There was something called a Wave Scanner for Ryuusei No Rockman (Megaman Starforce) That was of course Japanese exclusive. It plugged into the DS via the Gameboy port but the main connection was a little cord that plugged into that little plug at the bottom. It allowed you to scan barcoded cards and it had an LCD screen on it. It alone could be played by itself but the main functionality was to give you battle cards in the actual DS game much like the BattleChip Gates for the gameboy. I own one but it doesn't work that well unfortunately which is probably why it never got localizations.
Protip from someone who has lived in Japan and can read some Japanese but still has trouble with it: if you have the google translate app on your phone, you can go into the camera mode (in the app) and it will translate Japanese into English live on your screen. It'll really help if you get any Japanese products with unclear instructions, or just want the gist of what a product might be called
The zelda stylists is a Nintendo power give away when you ordered the magazine at leat it is how I got mine all but the case they just sent it to me in a box. Would have loved the case.
You didn't even look at the weirdest DS accessory of all time: the bluetooth keyboard that came with the only game that supported it, Learn with Pokemon: Typing Adventure. No I'm not even joking, it's a thing that exists. You can even pair the keyboard up with one bluetooth-compatible device, though it won't work with the game unless it's completely unpaired with everything else. The weirdest part is that it's one of the most reliable keyboards I've ever used.
I had a few of these! I remember getting the spirit tracks stylus from the US club Nintendo I think i also had the rumble pack, it came with Metroid Prime hunters the "comfort stylus" was sold everywhere in the US, me and my brother each had one for our games
Oh, I used to have the Pikachu DSi charger - I got mine from a local import shop at the time that's no longer in business (Was also a European or American release as it just had generic Pokémon branding and wasn't tying into the Best Wishes anime). I gave it to my nephew, I dunno if he still has it himself anymore.
I would've loved that wrap around stylus. I always wanted to use and like my stylus because it would be cleaner on my screen and had the tiny tip but I never liked the feeling of them. I'd always use my finger.
the keychain actually looks pretty nice!! i feel like its most useful for ppl who have issues remembering to slide their stylus back into its place, like me LOL
@The Retro Future @11:23 vintage Pete’s overtime get that sticky stuff you can get out by scrubbing really hard with dryer sheets it may take up to three of them to get it all but if you work hard and scrub hard you can get that sticky stuff off. Rubber
You know when people retire and they’ve collected a lot of things over their life, and it just seems really bizarre to everyone? You are going to be that weird old man that lives in a game boy house.
I think the banpresto mini consoles were in UFO catchers/ Claw machines because of the elastics on the backs- to grab on to. Not sure tho. The little DS is so cute- but the stylus holder is.... dumb. I have the banpresto mini wonderswans! They have little LCD clocks in them (that were leaking)
The bendable finger stylus isn't actually something Nintendo came up with. I bought 3 for the DS back in the day from a company I've forgotten the name of, which claimed they invented it and it was some new revolutionary stylus. Well, it wasn't all that special, but I also quite liked it. I used it to play Elite Beat Agents/Ouendan and it was really good for that as well as other touch-heavy games. I think it was $26 for 3 of them so they weren't exactly cheap, but had a definite convenience and usability advantage over a stylus that over time slips in your hand when you are playing fast paced games like EBA.
Pikachu would look better without the plastic crap sticking out the sides of the pokeball you can get rid of the sticky rubber with a nice solvent give it a soak
