This video is about neurological conditions, not psychiatry. Psychiatrists also aren’t there to patiently listen to all of your life problems, that’s a psychologist or therapist. A neurologist would be the one treating the neurological condition, and depending on how severe or how well understood the disease and treatments for the disease are, a psychiatrist may be suggested for medication to manage symptoms of the neurological condition. They’re doctors, though, not therapists, and are there to diagnose and treat psychiatric conditions, not give you life advice generally.

Just because that's how human life is now, doesn't mean that's the only way it can be. We've collectively created the world as it is, that means we have the power to change it into something better. No rose colored glasses, just the truth. We don't live in caves & hunt mammoth anymore, we don't live in huts & plow our fields by hand, we've overthrown dictators, reclaimed "ruined" land, we've gone to the moon & will go to mars soon. Change your mind & your life will change, change your life & the world will change. Any change, any meaning starts inside individuals, not governments or groups of any kind. We can't fix anything quickly - real change takes time - but we can make things better, step by step, moment by moment.

@@leeannbrookes6912 : I never intended to be funny, so... yeah, I'm glad it's not funny. I have a fatal genetic sleep disorder; every day I live w/ that & other problems I can't control. Ryan Hoover said he feels stuck in an eternal meaningless moment - I know how that feels & was trying to help. Individually & collectively, we need to learn what our limits are, AND we need to know there's a lot we can change for the better. We're never quite as helpless as we sometimes feel.

I have Tourette's Syndrome and yes I have the severity that everyone is used to seeing on the news but most TS sufferers don't curse (only about 10% of people with Tourette's curse) and can pretty much control most aspects of their life without the tics impeding on them. If you happen to see someone with this condition or any condition for that matter please don't laugh, point, take videos/pictures, make rude comments, etc. it hurts and is rude. I have had adults come up to me and say that the devil is in me and have to get an exorcism. PLEASE do not make fun of people. Have a nice day! Edit: I also have this pretty crazy tic where I go completely paralyzed form the neck down. Also, read what I wrote especially the exorcism bit and realize that I am only 13...

I read the book and he did it but not really. By that I mean that the guy basicly could only focus on one thing. So for example he couldn't reconise the face's of people because he could only see one eye, then the other then the nose etc. The interesting part was that if a person had a marking feature (like a unique scar) he could reconize them. Also he was a musique teacher and could still teach and go through life semi normally the only problem was that if something distracted him (like the door knocking) he would forget where he is and do nothing. Overall 10/10 book and every one should read it.

I don’t like criticizing people but that depiction of mental hospitals at 3:00 is so stereotypical. Actually, if you walk into a mental hospital, you’ll be surprised at how normal many of the people are. They’re PEOPLE. Nothing like what you see on TV. The stigma of mentally ill people hurts them AS MUCH as their own mental disorder. Also they got the name on #1 wrong. It’s called anterograde amnesia. Retrograde is the opposite. Otherwise, good video and thank you.

Yeah, I came here to say the same thing. I had to have all four wisdom teeth removed at the same time, and my insurance wouldn't cover sedation. I have a nerve disorder that causes local anesthetics like lidocaine and articaine not to work well on me (take longer to kick in, wear off very fast) so instead I suggested to the dentist that he prescribe a medication that caused anterograde amnesia. He was stunned by the idea, but then after thinking for a moment, he loved it, and prescribed halcion/triazolam. This was back in like 2011. Now it's apparently a pretty common dental sedation alternative to nitrous. I don't remember the procedure at all - I only VAGUELY remember checking in for it.

One of the worst things with having Tourettes is no one knows anything about it. Even my doctor and psychologists have been sceptical about whether I even have it. But they know nothing about it, and think all of us go around swearing and kicking all the time. We are struggling so hard to keep the tics in, and then health professionals question us because they don't see/notice any ticks while in a conversation with us!:'(

My uncle is a leading expert on BIID (I believe he coined the term) so I've heard a bit about it from him. It's always interesting to hear see videos and other people discuss it as people who have read about it. Usually it's people who get really mad and not understanding that it's an actual mental disease, so it was nice/interesting hearing it discussed respectfully and treated as an actual illness.

Alien hand syndrome is very strange as well. The sufferer's hand (usually the left) literally has a will of it's own, that will slap/punch them or other people, randomly grab people and objects, break things, steal things from their other hand, and be a general douche to the person. It can get to a point where they have to physically restrain their own hand.

Apparently after I recovered (i also ended up in the mental hospital because I ended up hurting myself with a rock) I have apparently changed personality to a more hardened and even very harsh individual. But after I have been through that hell I appreciate life even more and I’m glad living because a very big amount of people who get that diagnosis apparently commits suicide. So yay life. BIID isn’t necessarily about amputation-it’s any type of desire or feeling that they should be disabled. Some people with it feel they should be paralyzed or have gastric, lung, neurological, etc. disorders too. And it isn’t that the limb or organ is alien or anything-that’s a totally separate form of dissociative or depersonalization disorder-it’s that they feel dysphoria surrounding being able bodied. They know their body parts belong to them. I don’t have this, though it’s been talked about a lot in my disability groups because of a woman who went viral last year (and was grossly referred to as “trans-abled”.) But I do have recurrent amnesia from my dissociative disorder. I don’t remember much of my life before high school and I’m working in therapy to coax other dissociated identity states in my body to help me piece my past together.

Woah, Lucas, I was gonna leave a random comment but I feel like I should post it here. I'm a trans man, and after watching this video I feel like I might have BIID too? Like, I've wanted to be amputated below the knee myself. Not that I would go so far as to do it myself, but I've thought about scenarios about extreme car accidents where they say 'we can save the leg!' and I beg them not to. But maybe its also logic that I would rather be amputated than have a bum leg to drag around? Or maybe it's an intense desire to be a pirate with a peg leg, who the fuck knows. Best of luck with your therapy, if you have any I-don't-know-you-but-heres-what-I-know tips for me, that would be cool.
@lucastelford6863
@lucastelford6863 6 лет назад
kamackmac Definitely! First, I’m trans too. Kinda. My dissociative disorder makes it weird because I’m not exactly the original identity in my body. So I don’t identify as trans since I haven’t always been the core, but I’ve always been male. But I’m transitioning the body so I AM trans. Anyway. So BIID, just like my DID, is unfortunately heavily stigmatized. And demonized. And doubted. But know that your feelings ARE real, and they’re not intentional. There’s a reason you feel like this and it’s not choice. First off remember that gender dysphoria and body integrity disorders are not related. Don’t feel like you have to question or doubt why you’re trans because you don’t. BIID can have a lot of causes. Brain damage is one, but trauma, childhood illness, an ill person close to your life, dissociative disorders, and thought disorders can all be causes too. Have you always felt this way, or did it happen at a certain point in your life? Does anything alleviate your feelings? Both things you should be thinking about. Also think if you can figure out a reason why. There’s NO bad reason-this isn’t in your control. Sometimes it takes a long time in therapy to figure it out but it’s never too early to start exploring it. Do you feel like you don’t get attention or care, or didn’t as a child? Is there something being disabled would do for you? Has someone else influenced your feelings? Sometimes though those reasons don’t apply-it just feels right to be disabled and not because you gain or lose anything from it. I’d encourage you to talk to someone you trust. But be careful of the language you use. When I told my first therapist about my voices, which turned out to be my alters talking and not hallucinations, I didn’t think about that and just blurted out THERES VOICES IN MY HEAD. Not ideal. I would avoid using desire language-don’t say you WANT to be disabled or lose a limb. Say you feel like you should be disabled, and lead into the details with that. Wanting indicates intention to feel that way and you didn’t choose this. Sometimes treatment can involve simulating the disability in private while you work out how to move past it. You may be encouraged to use a wheelchair at home. You should never hurt yourself-if you think you’re going to, and you’re in the US, you can text 741-741 and they’ll talk you through it. You’re also going to spend some time seeing what other issues may be involved here-you may have a mild thought disorder or be dealing with cognitive distortions. There’s a list of disordered thinking types I got from my trauma therapist that I can share with you if you want to see if any sound like something you deal with. My trauma and dissociation have made me really prone to disordered thinking. I can also send you some info on dissociation, since sometimes BIID comes with/from dissociative tendencies. Does any of that help?
@lucastelford6863
@lucastelford6863 6 лет назад
Hugo Thank you! We’re piecing it together bit by bit and making a book of what we learn so I can remind myself independently every day. It’s really hard going through a day and not remembering any of it. I didn’t remember watching this video or commenting until I saw I had notifications and I still don’t remember typing any of my original comment. I couldn’t pick my parents out of a lineup and I don’t know how long I knew my best friend. Trauma can change the structure of your brain and in early childhood, it can prevent your basic behavior states from unifying. That’s how DID forms. It’s scary thinking I could end up in New Jersey or Florida tomorrow and not know how I got there. It’s scary never knowing if I left something on at home or locked the door or ate that day. But when you work on communication between your alter states, you start to fill in those gaps. It’s a slow process but I think we’ll come out okay. x

I have had this since I was very young and it is the strangest experience I’ve ever and will ever had and it’s so hard to explain especially since it was accompanied by other strange phenomena’s of the brain that only after years found out that these experiences had actual names. And later on in life developed other mental illness’s that all play into each other. All I can say is my mind is like a shroom or acid trip that has past the peak, starting to come down gone on for far too long you have been up all night and it’s reaching dawn and you are wanting it to fully settle down now as it’s getting tiring and a bit too much and there’s still all these little head states and sensations you are feeling and it might slightly pick up for a little bit then go back down towards that nearing end plateau. and it’s been there for so long that those little trippy experiences aren’t a big shock it’s more a normality or slight burden, an interruption. It’s a whacky magical thing thing sometimes but it’s not something a human should be experiencing in there every day life. It can get so overwhelming and tiring and so hard tonormally function that I just wish to evaporate gently into a something of nothing

*Back when I was a kid, there would be times when I freeze and I couldn’t do anything. I remember when I was running on our elementary school football field in 3rd grade and I just froze, I couldn’t think or anything. My vision was sort of blurred and I saw smudges of blue with my eyesight. It was like in a 3rd person view spinning around from above look down upon me. This happened multiple times during my childhood, but it stopped when I turned 12-13 or so. I never really told anyone besides my teacher when the first time it happened and she didn’t care, because you know, elementary teachers.*

Alex LeDraggu For me it's like an itch. If I try to scratch it, it feels better temporarily, but as I keep scratching it it gets worse and worse until it bleeds heavily. It's an endless cycle you can't escape from. When it was at it's worse for me and it was very severe I remember falling onto the floor, crying, forcing myself to do the rituals even tho I didn't want to. It was like something was controlling me.

I used to have periods where my vision would fade out and I'd get extremely dizzy and have rapid eye movements, and we were going to the doctor to try to figure out what it was. He asked me a few odd questions, namely 'what time is it'(using an analog clock) and 'what color is my hair' ; he was bald. Apparently he had had a patient with a brain tumor that had somehow damaged their sensory processing (don't remember exactly) and she was taking in the inputs but her brain was distorting them; she insisted he had blonde hair and even felt hair when he asked her to feel his head, and she couldn't read the left half of an analog clock, with the same issue of seeing something that wasn't there. Can't give any more details bc I don't remember it very well, so sorry if I got anything wrong.

Great video, but mental hospitals really don’t look like that. I lived in one for four years. I was admitted at 15, and discharged at 19. You often wouldn’t even know it was a hospital by the people there, though sometimes it did get loud and patients, including myself, would become distressed and need physically restrained. The thing is, a lot of the time we’d just watch TV, read, play pool or board games, relax in our rooms or have movie nights. We were regular teenagers who just happened to have an illness. Now, although I’m still unwell sometimes, I have a job, I have friends, I travel often, and I study. We’re not incurable, we’re not crazy, and we certainly never wore straight jackets 😂

I lost my friends, because i made nothing outside the house. And everything in the house just because my parents made me to do that. They wont stop hope for me and around 4-5 month later, some feelings came back. When i look back nowdays, it feel so strange and i am so thankfull for my parents that they were there for me, even if this was maybe the hardest time for them.
