I just want to thank you for this great video. Your content was clear and certainly helped me to install my lights front and back. I had a little bit of trouble trying to connect the defuser to the plastic base, probably because they are new. As an electrical instructor I found your video straight to the point and the information on the screen was very helpful. I did add some more cable protection to the black 12 volt feed cable, just to protect against heat. Thank you again for all of your great videos and please keep up the great content. Stay safe.

Annoying that we have to pay to overcome BMW Motorrad shortcomings. But a big 'thank you' for an excellent set of videos on the subject. Clear explanations & great camera angles. This installation guide was a fantastic help to unfastening modern day connectors whose latches can be easily broken. Have just completed the install on my GSA and found the tips on securing the additional wiring very useful. A tip of my chapeau to you for securing a 10% discount from Weiser Technik too 😀

What an excellent, well informed instructional video. I bought these today from a main dealer and have just completed the install, I didn’t use the supplied instructions at all, just the video, well done! I changed a few things, that being used soldered joints with heat shrink and cloth wiring loom tape. These lights are a vast improvement, very bright and with a great viewing angle, I really don’t know how the original lights got approval. Obviously a lot or R&D went in to these and they have done a great job, but my only criticism is i think the plastic housing is a little cheap and not that of a OEM product, for what these cost I would have liked to see better quality plastic housings used, the lenses are fine. Thanks again for a great video.

Hi Carl Thanks for the fitting guide, it is clear, concise and an excellent step by step guide. The indicators have been fitted and are super bright, almost like having another set of spotlights. No more mistaking the front orange marker light as an indicator, all white lights at the front unless indicating. I took option 2 for the rear, so now it is clear for anyone following which way I am indicating. As I have a Hex EZcan fitted, I chose to use one of the accessory outlets for the trigger feed as opposed to taking the feed from the tail section. Works a treat. Thanks again Alex

I have installed these lights front and back kit yesterday. Carl tutorial makes this install easier and error free. Awesome how-too from a professional engineer with very good communication skills. Love the lights! What a difference comparing with the OEM. I just wish the quality of the housing were more comparable with the OEM. I have also use the kit to reactivate the break light. The tail of the bike is now well illuminated and turn signals front and back are clear and bright. BMW has to fix this on the new R1300GS for driver safety. Thanks Carl!!!

Glad to hear you found the installation guide helpful, and yes the lights are a huge improvement over the originals which are very confusing. Your comment about the housing has been mentioned before, and this feedback has been given back to Weiser-Technik. I believe in the future they will redesign the housings... but they are waiting to see what BMW do with the new GS1300. Currently from what i have been told, the UK -Europe bikes will no longer have a tail lamp assembly and we are going to get the same multifunction confusing lights as before, which is not good news... North America will still get the tail light assembly, so for them it is good news... But we have to wait and see what exactly we do or don't get kindest Regards Carl

@RS_Mike_Truss
@RS_Mike_Truss 11 месяцев назад
@@justthewayitis Hi Carl, like yourself I prefer the “no chance of confusion” mode 1, however, that was the one minor issue I have, even though I set the jumper to mode 1 on both rear indicators, the outside(right) one continues to operate in mode 2. It’s a bit odd and I double checked the jumper was in the correct position. I have a ticket with Weiser Technik, I’m sure they will help me sort it. I am though delighted with the bright and clear functionality. The indicator function is so much brighter than the running lights I can see that even in mode 2 the chance of any confusion is eliminated. Note: I did initially forget to set the jumpers to mode 1 and initialised/tested the system in mode 2, so possibly this confused things. UPDATE: Went for a ride, stopped after about 30 Km to reset the date/time after having the battery disconnected. Checked the rear indicators while stopped and both now working correctly in Mode 1, 🙂

Thanks Carl. I bought rears from Weiser Technik after watching this video. (Got the discount too so double thanks for that). Until I saw this, I didn’t know there was a solution to my biggest issue with my GS. I had enquired at my local dealer to ask if the configuration of the stop light / rear indicator function could be changed but they answered it immediately with a no. That made me think I’m definitely not the first to ask about this. How BMW were able to type approve the bikes with the original set-up is beyond me. It’s dangerous in my opinion and I’m delighted to have it resolved now. I found the installation easy and quick and I’d recommend this to all owners of affected bikes for your own safety’s sake. 👍

Hi Russell, good morning and thank you for your feedback. Yes the Weiser-Tech indicator upgrade makes a really big improvement to visibility and safety. like you, I think owners should think about doing this. BMW really need to find a better solution and from what I have been told the new 1300GS does not have a rear lamp / lenses unit anymore!!! All functions are being done through indicators. I really hope this is incorrect news but we have to wait and see. Carl

Following on from the above. I have run the front to back black wire Iside the expanding conduit that comes on the main loom with the relay and then used small conduit everywhere else. I also tucked the cut off Gey and yellow wires back inside the expanding conduit so all nice and secure and hidden away.. Simply push the conduit together front to rear and it expands, creating loads of room for extra wires and then pull it back tight. I reckon this has taken me 4-5 hours constantly stopping to watch the video.

Just fitted mine today, I must say your video is the way to go, much better than the instructions, plus the wire to connect to the tail light is different in the instructions to the one you showed. Yours is right. All went well , apart from I decided to check them before I reassembled the panels etc, mentally going through everything, front wiring done 👍, rear units wired correctly and all black wires joined up 👍, red wire joined to the tail light wire👍 Just connect the earth wire to the battery, positive previously done, and give it a check. Bummer! no rear lights and a dash board message saying brake light fault. Rechecked everything several times before realising I hadn’t put the fuse in 😩. Once in, everything is as it should be and they are very good, proper bright. The front running lights make so much more sense than the dim orange and the rear indicators are so much more visible if the brake light is on. I now have the brake light fault message every time I switch on but I’ll clear the fault the next time I connect up my GS911. Many thanks to you Carl👍

Hi Carl, For the replacement part I emailed Debbie, who organised it for me. I bought the EVO unit from a friend who decided not to fit it to his bike. I'm thinking that might be the reason I was charged for the lens 🤷‍♂️ I went for option A, so that the running/brake lights are off on the side indicating. I think that is the best solution. I'm impressed with the brightness of the lights, but the true result won't be known until I get out on the road. Removing the extra Adventure panels for the first time was interesting. Putting them back on was a challenge, as was feeding the black wire from the battery are up to the front of the bike but a much longer cable-tie (another d#great tip of yours!) eventually got it sorted. I ordered 4 x of the smallest size units but was actually sent 2 x small and 2 x medium. Thankfully the mediums fit on the rear of the bike with just a couple of mm clearance from my panniers! Phew! @@justthewayitis Guten Tag, my bike is blue/silver combo BTW. Not exactly a 'tip' but I have just changed the mounting bolts for my indicators! 🤔 I recently heard of a group of bikers who went to watch the F1 practice at Silverstone UK. When they returned to their bikes, they'd been stripped of a number of items such as exhaust cans, satnav/phone mounts ... and particularly on the BMW's, the indicators. Worrying that this could happen in what you'd think was a fairly busy location. Anyway, taking into account the cost of this Weiser Technik kit, I looked at how to make them more secure. The only solution I could find was to change the mounting bolts for M6 x 16mm T30 Security Torx bolts all round. Certainly not foolproof but will hopefully lesson the chance of the new indicators being quite so easily removed. An easy way to check is just remove the rear seat and check the two indicator connectors (as shown in the video) they are the two inner most connectors and will be either 2 pin or 4 pin. If it's a North American built bike, it will be 2 pin. If it's a European bike and you currently have multifunction in the indicators (indicators and brake lights) you will have 4 pin connectors. If you only have indicators with no other function... they will be 2 pin. Hope that helps Carl

Then I reconfigured the Cansmart "horn port" to supply "12 V switched power". That way I can also use my only Cansmart as a PDU to supply the "charging station" in my topbox with power while on the move 👍. And my Innovv K3 dashcam also. 😎 Stay safe behind bars!

Hi Carl, really useful video, thanks for taking the time to make it. For those of us who will be attempting the install without a garage or any sort of weather protection, and need the bike to be normally available for work, are the stages that could be usefully completed without completing the install? Assembling the indicators seems an obvious but fairly minor way to reduce "exposure time", but are there other steps that could be usefully done on the bike? E.g. installing the harness and the back lights, and returning to installing the front lights (and the routing of the front part of the harness) another day?
@justthewayitis
@justthewayitis 8 месяцев назад
Hi Chris, thank you for your feedback, much appreciated. Yes, the rear indicators can be fully assembled prior to install, fronts can be also fully assembled IF you decide to join all 3 black 12V wires using the posi-twist which then you mount under the headlight or an area you are happy with. ( Normally i place this connection inside the RH indicator ) Also, if you follow the video, installing the wiring harness first, followed by the front indicators, then refit everything that you have removed, this will allow the front to be fully completed on the bike in one short session. At this point you will have fully working super bright front indicators and you could then, on a separate day install the rear indicators and complete the install. This is how i might do it over two days. Evening before: Fully assemble both rear indicators. (follow video) Partially or fully assemble both rear indicators. Day 1 Install wiring harness (Fuse out) Put tape over ALL unused wires (the end of the wire where you can see the core) coming from the wiring harness. (this is for protection as wires will be live during the test) Install front indicators Connect 12V black wire from harness to both front indicators. (fuse in and test) Day 2 Remove fuse Remove tape placed on above wires install rear indicators (fuse in and test everything) Alternatively, if you have a friend with a garage, that would be simpler Regards Carl

Fantastic how to! I’ve just installed a set on my new GSA. Unfortunately I seem to have a faulty rear unit. Red leds flash for a split second and then go off. Indicator function is fine. Other side is fine, and cabling is all good as I swapped the unit to the other side and the fault followed. Bit disappointing as otherwise they are fantastic and very bright. Also getting the beak off the GSA is a lot fiddlier then the regular GS!

My tank bag is an earlier version called the SW Motech Evo Engage... not sure if you can still get these but I wanted a smaller bag and to be able to add a Map bag on top while touring which I like to use in combination with the Navi-6. They do make a newer GS specific version called Evo GS, which one of our bike club members has, it's a bit bigger than the Engage version. Quality wise I've had no issues and the quick release works great it's just the perfect size for me, but others do like the bigger version. Best wishes Carl

The front do not have the 'options' and are ON all the time (White) and then Orange and White when flashing. Is it possible to configure them to be as the rear - no daytime running light, flashing indicator only? Kind Regards, Martin

Hello Carl, it has been a while... I bought a set of the Weiser front and rear signals for a BMW R1250 GS. I live in Germany, and today the bike "failed" the TÜV, or the equivalent of the motor vehicle department test, due to the Weiser turn signals. I was informed that they may have an E approval, but this does not mean that they can be used in Germany. So I have been asked to provide the necessary documentation, that these lights are in fact approved to be used in Germany. There is a specific thing to be considered. According to the person that checked the bike, the GS already has a day running light, which is the main headlamp. The turn signals on the GS are originally yellow. This makes them not an additional daylight running light, but a "directional" light. The Weiser lights, being white, cannot be a daylight as then I would have three daylight running lights, which is not allowed in Germany. So basically, the Weiser lights can only be approved to be used in Germany if they do not have the purpose of a daylight running light, but a "directional" (or something other than a daylight) use. The key thing is, what are they intended to be used for? Daylight, directional light (which apparently is different), or any other use? Do you know anything about this, have you had any issues with getting the TÜV for your bike? Otherwise, the bike will not get the TÜV/DMV approval and cannot be ridden. Thank you very much in advance for your support. Max
@justthewayitis
@justthewayitis 3 месяца назад
Hi Max, Good morning. Thank you for your message and question. As i have mentioned in one of my videos i took my own R1250GS 2021 MY for a TÜV test (here in Hessen) last year and it passed without any problems. After the test was completed I then was completely open and honest with the two Motorrad TÜV staff members and showed them the changes that the Weiser indicator lights ( front and rear ) had made to the GS in terms of improving visibility both front and rear. They both then spent some time going through a very large technical guideline book reading the rules and regulations on lighting and decided that the only thing that officially they could object to was the on the rear of the bike, and that currently the laws prevents us motorcyclist having 3 separate rear tail lights. So I agreed to disconnect the additional Wizard module that I had used which re-activates the centre tail light. Once i had discounted this module they were happy. They did not object to the Weiser front indicators, because the WHITE light is on a separate circuit which is independent to the indicators. Basically the indicators still perform the legal requirement. BUT, when they are not indicating they perform a second function which is controlled by an independent control circuit, which is just the same as running any auxiliary light on the front of the bike. If what they ( your TÜV station) are saying is correct.... it would mean that no one here in Germany / Europe can fit extra accessory lights (for example a set of Denali spot lights, which everyone uses for extra visibility and in effect they are used as DRL) thousands of owners use these lights ""turned on all the time"", which means they are in affect Day light running lights. I am not a TÜV expert and the laws here in Germany are as you know are sometimes very complex, plus it seems the rules can be understood in several different ways. One TÜV station says they are ok and now your TÜV station says they are not ok. My bike passed the test.... your bike hasn't... which is very strange. Their are a lot of GS owners here in Germany that have fitted these kits and enjoy the extra safety and visibility they provide. You are the first GS owner to mention a TÜV problem on the front while using Weiser indicators. It would be interesting to know exactly which rule they believe the front indicators fail on ? perhaps you can ask them to give you the exact "quote" or "text" that says these are not acceptable and why ? You could also send a message to the Weiser-Technik team back in the UK and see if they have heard about this from any other riders here in Germany. I know here in Germany their are a lot of different rules and regulation that apply to ANY changes we make to our motorbikes and its sometimes very hard to get a 100% clear answer. Let me know how you get on Max... I am very interested to hear what rules they say your GS fails on. LG Carl - Hessen

@@justthewayitis Thank you very much for your quick response Carl. In the meantime, I have decided that unfortunately I will take the Weiser lights out and install the OEM ones. Without passing the inspection, I cannot ride, and that is more of an unwanted situation/problem. I agree with you, you ask ten TÜV inspectors and may get many different answers on what is and what is now allowed. I bought the lights because I want the extra protection that I believe they give me, but I do not want to make a big thing and simply be able to ride without problems. In the meantime I also contacted the support team, but their answer is simply being very surprised about my situation since they have sold thousands of sets in Europe and never encountered such a problem. So without any proper documentation on these lights being approved in Germany that I can present, I have no choice. Thanks again, I really appreciate you getting back to me so quickly. Safe riding now that the season has finally started, and greetings from Berlin.

Do you have to notify your company of this change and if so have you seen an increase in annual premiums?... On this topic, I have found that any changes to the standard factory issue bike need to be notified to your insurance company and this includes, bar risers, and with Carol Nash Insurance even stickers!! not joking....the inclusion if stickers may make your bike more of a target for theft and/or vandalism. Weiser gave me such incredible support when I was installing them. So much support, that it’s not scalable. Their instructions are poor and the US instructions are non-existent. Now they have you doing videos instead of their techs. It’s such a a amazing product, albeit expensive, that increases visibility and reduces the chances of a crash significantly. It’s a shame they don’t get the finger out and create install videos akin to ‘A Bike Thing’, in order to better support customers, and attract more customers. They’re really missing a trick with this one aspect, but it’s such a major gap.

Hi Tim, ok now I understand. Well the episode was a basic standard install, of course you can use other materials but most owners don't have access to them. You could for example cut into the harness and join the Weiser Red and Yellow wires at the tail light or in another place using solder and then use shrink tubing to seal them, and the same with joining the four Black wires and the four Grey wires (usa specs) using the same technique, but... this is beyond most owners abilities. So that's why Weiser have kept the installation simple using the Posi connectors. Also not much water gets access to under the seat area and I feel what is included in the kit works well. This is just one way to install the kit. Really it comes down to owner ability, access to tools and time. When Weiser visited me we did talk through this... but as they have highlighted the kits have been installed this way in North America for several years, by owners and BMW dealers and they have seen Zero issues with reliability. I hope this helps. Best wishes Carl
