UPDATE to my earlier comments--I have now installed the Weiser EVO Extreme lights; front and back (or rather I should say, I've HAD them installed by my favorite SoCal BMW dealer, Brown Motor Works of Pomona, CA) and the EVOs are damned impressive. Converting the front indicators to BRIGHT white DRLs changes the entire presentation of the bike to oncoming traffic--they see nothing but pure, clean, white light, and when I indicate, the bright amber indicator is impossible to miss or to misinterpret. That brings me to my Denali lights (a pair of D7s just below the stock headlight, and a pair of D2s on the forks, mounted low, near the calipers). Initially, I had the Cansmart programed to kill each D7 as I indicated left or right--as most of your installations have done. However, after having just paid big bucks for the EVO kit, which provides much brighter front and rear indicators, I no longer feel the need to kill the corresponding D7 when I indicate (and have reprogrammed the Cansmart accordingly). But there was a second reason for ditching the D7 off-when-indicating settin: when using the indicator to change from one lane to the other on a freeway, having the D7 reactivate behind the vehicle I'm now following, it appeared to me (and I assume to him) that I'd suddenly hit him with my brights for no reason. I know my D7s are bright (oncoming traffic often tells me) so I can imagine how it feels to see them come on in their review--and I can only imagine what goes through their mind (@^%#!!). So, ixnay on the dim/dip when indicating--my EVO's are bright enough to shine through my D7s! Anyone disagree?

Hey Bike Thing! I follow your channel along with others and enjoy your channel here in US. I have the 23GS in the trophy version Which I took possession of toward the end of November. Like all my motorcycles I've had I never left lighting at factory standards, and this GS was no different. Unfortunately the headlights that came on the 23 were halogen because of Shortage in electronics industry, but I did change the halogen lamp sound to LED's which truly improve my writing until the new retrofit comes to to BMW the end of this month which is February. I immediately didn't like the BMW you turn signals Both front and rear because I didn't think they were at their maximum capacity of what they could be doing. I found on another channel Called just the way it is Who focuses on the GS, wiser technologies LED Lighting for front and rear. I immediately purchased and it was delivered and I broke the bike down and installed it. This lighting is at least 5 times brighter in the rear and 20 times brighter on the front running lights. The rear act as integrated with my brake lights which Are red running lights and super bright red brake lights integrated with the stock Light, And directionals turn bright Amber. Front running lights are 6000 K bright white, and during directional used they are super bright ambers. I am more comfortable writing any motorcycle knowing that I have more lights to be seen in the rear and also be in seen from the front for those idiots that want to turn in front of you. I enjoy your channel from Afar and appreciate your work and your due diligence !

I reported these exact safety concerns with my dealer and asked them to report with BMW motorad. Reply came back that I could purchase older style indicators at retail cost. I had someone walk across road in front of me because they thought I was turning due to amber lights and a mate was following me on a ride on a sunny day and said he couldn't see difference braking/indicating which during my report I asked why they didn't at least put the indicator section as the outer part of the rear indicator's. How on earth did BMW get these to pass type approval is beyond my understanding. Great video, just a shame it takes owners and companies to rectify huge safety risks from manufacturing.

I really like the look of the white light across the front of the bike.. looks great. It’s quite puzzling what BMW have done to the indicators for 2021, onwards, bikes! I thought it’d cause issues even before I heard of any problems arising. Luckily I have a 2020 1250 GSA which has the separate rear light, but I’m now hanging on until the 1300GSA is available. It’ll be interesting to see if they have the same configuration, or might they have listened to feedback and designed in a resolution. If not, I’ll be paying you a visit to have the Weisers installed. Great video 👍

Fixing a problem that shouldn’t even be a problem. BMW need to take note. I really don’t like the MFTS on the later bikes. I stuck with my 2019 GSA in the end when looking to update it. A small part because of this but also when I was looking, BMW couldn’t guarantee anything more than a Halogen Headlight (which I would have to pay to get swapped out when the new one was available). Just to be pedantic... Mark at Weiser Technik would prefer if these lights were not referred to as DRL's (i.e. Daytime Running Lights) because dedicated DRL's are not designed to be used at night in some countries such as the UK. Weiser Technik refer to these as "driving lights" and as such intend them to be used at any time. Also my RU-vid pal Carl at his channel "Just The Way It Is" has several in depth videos regarding these lights (inc. two excellent installation videos) and I also have a video of me fitting them to my R1250R... a 2021 (Euro5) bike without multifunction turn signals :)

Steve, I’m currently using all 4 circuits on my EzCan. Would wiring the trigger wires to an EzCan splitter cable (I have two on the shelf) work better in lieu of a relay in this circumstance? If so, would I need one or two splitters (one for front and one for rear)? Or just use the relay? I have a 2020 GSA.
@ABIKETHING
@ABIKETHING Год назад
Hi, positaps come in the kit so you can join front to rear anyway (saves on buying a splitter) but then the one wire can go to one circuit as a light pair and this would mean you wouldn't need a relay.

Hi, got the combination set a few weeks back and still have not got around to fitting them 🙄 Just watched the install video again and noticed you mention that they can be wired using an EXCAN circuit rather than the relay. I have spare circuits on my EXCAN (only running a set of Denalis). Is it simply a matter of connecting the relay wires onto the EXCAN circuit rather than fitting the relay to the battery and splicing into the bike wiring? I would rather splice in into the EXCAN circuit rather than the OEM. The bike is a 2019 1250GS. PS - if there was an easy to purchase connector that would save all the splicing that would be even easier 😁

I don’t ride a GS, and wasn’t aware of this issue at all, but begs a question - How on Earth did this pass the board meeting? Do they not care about safety? How did they get TÜV (or whatever the German technical inspection association name is) approval? It’s ridiculous. I also hate my Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports amber running lights on turn signals. Makes no sense. If they don’t glow white what’s the point. All it does is create more confusion among already heavily distracted drivers.

It does make sense - amber/yellow lights are perceived more easily than white bulbs in daylight, and there is research (albeit limited) to suggest that amber drls on motorcycles increase safety over white drls. Again, given that they have been on Hondas for years I think we'd have some evidence by now that they are a singular cause of accidents rather than rider or driver error.

Odd that Honda riders don't seem to have the issue that some GS riders do? Accidents happen, and there is no good way of knowing whether this was down to the front lights. As bike riders, we all experience cars pulling out from junctions by mistake, and I can't say that the number of such incidences has increased for me over the old indicators vs the new. Too easy to blame the equipment. As for the rear, many modern cars have the same multi-cluster format in which the brake light washes out the indicator. But if the rider is only indicating near or at the time he or she brakes, then perhaps that rider needs to reassess their roadcraft. It should be a non-issue.

@sunnycloudy1337
@sunnycloudy1337 Год назад
They should have a fix from firmware. You go to the bmw dealership and they only click some buttons while the bike is connected to their laptop and be done with it. 1. turn on/off position light on central light 2. turn on/off position light from turn signals 2a. turn on/off position light while signaling from turn signals 3. turn on/off brake light from turn signals 3a. turn on/off brake light while signaling from turn signals It's should have been that easy, a few on/off switches on the firmware software updater canbus thing-a-magig, but alas, it's not. These weiser lights are terrible imho. They are bulky, ugly and the screw is at the front of the lense? not even at the back? pfff. Where as the bmw turn signals are sleek, sexy and not a horrible dot matrix. That and the fact you have to tap into factory wiring, and connecting a relay to the battery, that's not what plug and play means, Steve. I think that all of the modifications you've done over the years have gone to your head if you think using posi taps is plug and play 😬 In conclusion, it's a no from me. I have the 2022 GSA with multifunction 1 and multifunction 2 options fitted from the factory and I'm perfectly happy with them. Please note that I rode over 16.000 kilometers within 6 different european countries with my bike. While I agree that the bmw solution is dodgy at best, I never had an issue with the amber DRL's at the front. And on the rear, I simply turn on my indicators before I have to brake. It's what every driver should do, even the ones in cars/trucks/buses. There is also a traffic rule for that. You are required by law to use your blinker 50 meters before the intersection in a town and 100 meters outside of it. It's that simple. What's the point of turning on the signal as you're making the turn? It makes no sense but I've seen plenty of drivers doing it. Even drivers turning left from the first lane instead of switching to the second lane and then performing the turn (while driving on the right side of the road) I would also argue that there are bad drivers everywhere and I highly doubt installing these ugly yet less shady lights would make the bad drivers pay more attention to you or be less bad. But even though I don't personally like the weiser product, it's always good having multiple options to chose from. However, I will stick with my factory OEM multifunction indicators for now.

@ryanmalone2681 Год назад
I'm so disappointed with this video. I kept telling Weiser they should get Steve to make one of his step-by-step videos because the product is so good, but not easy and not plug-n-play. Steve is just selling the product and not showing the trickiest bits of the installation. Sorry Steve, but this is not of your typical quality videos. Some issues are: 1. The instructions included are for Europe and the diagram doesn't apply to the US. No specific diagram for the US. The written instructions are totally confusing and I needed direct support from Weiser to translate to US bikes. Their instructions are just lazy. Almost AliExpress level quality. 2. No information about which wire to tap for switched brake light power. Evem with direct support I tapped more than one before I got the right one and then had to repair wire. 3. The L-shaped lock for the outer lens cover doesn't fit properly. I broke as many as I didn't and needed to trim some plastic off on the ones that didn't break. It's just a poor fit and needs to be hacked a bit. 4. Not a lot of extra cable between the ground and power, so if you want to run power through one cable raceway and ground through another, such as using a PDM, you don't have a lot of flexibility. 5. The longer stems are too long for the GS/GSA if you're going off-road and will have the bike falling over, especially on an incline. They sent me the longer ones and I raised this concern, and it took only a few days off-road to break one of them. Then I broke some of the replacements because of issue #3. The support from Wieser was amazing though. When I told them what happened and reminded them of my initial concerns, they sent the replacements for free, and when I called because the new ones didn't fit properly and were breaking, they were very responsive. I still had to trim them myself and keep a broken one because they just don't fit properly. This is one of the most valued safety upgrades I've done on my bike. I don't regret it. However, it would only take a couple of hours to create a detailed video to address almost all of these issues, especially for US bikes, and make it so much easier to install. Someone needs to create a video to address the issues above, and also maybe create some best practice in how to wire it because there is a lot of excess wire and it's very thin. I know what I did, but I'm sure there are better options. Not as bad as what Weiser offers, but not 'a Bike Thing' standard either.
