That mill stand you designed is better than ones you can buy. The casters and leveling feet are a great choice. And I would have been disappointed if you hadn't taken the mill apart for a thorough cleaning, inspection, and oiling. Well done, Sir!

Thank you Daniel, I really appreciate your comment!! I'm very happy with the casters are 'life savers' in my tiny shop, as for the leveling feet once they tighten against the floor the base becoming a rock. Thanks again! All the best Dimitris P.S. Looking forward to see the restoration of the Hamilton sensitive drill press

The base looks great. I like the idea with separate casters and leveling feet. For pre setting the DRO value - thank you, because I had no idea how to use those arrow buttons. Not sure if this is really useful though, I just reset to zero on some reference surface of my part, but it’s good to know I always had another option available.
@JimmysCanal
@JimmysCanal 3 года назад
Thanks for your comment Adam, I appreciate it! Glad to hear that you like the base. As for presetting the DRO, you can set it either for downward or upward feed. If you want to make an inside groove for instance, you can lock the spindle at a specific depth zeroing the DRO, then preset it using the upwards arrow to the needed value; now you can feed the spindle upwards to the preset value. All the best Jimmy

First off, I want to compliment your stand, absolutely top notch craftsmanship, very well done! I also would like to ask if you could explain the DRO on the quill in more detail. I am a home hobbyist that just bought the VM32L, and it has the same. It is not even mentioned in the manual that came with machine, and when I reached out to Weiss corporate, I was told simply on and off, and that the bottom 2 buttons don't do anything. Obviously they do, but never having used a mill before, I'm a little confused on operation of it's functions. I would greatly appreciate any help you could provide. I think the Weiss might also benefit from some guidance. Thank you
@JimmysCanal
@JimmysCanal 2 года назад
Hello Tom, I apologize for the late reply. Now, about the quill DRO you asked; it's really very simple to use the preset function. Lets say that you need to mill a slot in a part, 3mm deep; the steps are: first you need to engage the quill with the fine feed (used the knurled screw at the center of the quill handle). Use the fine feed knob and zero your cutter by just touching the part, then zero the DRO. Now you hold down the zero button, in approx. 3 seconds you will see the letter 'S' blinking at the top right corner of the display. Use the down arrow button to set -3mm, once you set it press the zero button again. Now that the value has set the only you need to do is to turn the fine feed knob until the display shows zero. I hope that this helps a bit. All the best Jimmy

@@JimmysCanal Yes that does help, thank you very much for explaining it so well. Seems odd, and a shame that the manufacturer (Weiss), did not know this. Would you mind if I send your explanation to them? It would be my way of subtly mocking them, as I think it is incomprehensible that they wouldn't know this. Not unbelievable though, as I ordered it with DRO installed, and the manual is written in Chinese - English, and near impossible to understand. Basically rendering it near useless. Fortunately I was told they are aware of this, and are working on a tutorial video to put out. Thank you once again my friend
@JimmysCanal

I'm sorry once again for the delayed reply Tom, (short vacations). Glad to know that my answer helped you. When I uploaded this video, I sent the link as well to Weiss customer support, I never received a reply or something, I belive they only care to sell; explaining them how the quill DRO works I think would be waste of time. As for the DRO manual you said, there is an application were you can upload scans from the text you want to translate, with 95% accuracy in translation; search Xynudu's channel: ru-vid.com he's mention on that app. in one of his videos. Regards from Greece Jimmy

@@JimmysCanal well thank you once again for the tip on getting some information. When I ordered my machine, I dealt with the president of the company, and that is who I still email when I need some info, or to give some. I attached the explanation you gave me to an email to him, and he responded to say once again that the bottom 2 buttons serve no purpose on my machine, they only work when that readout is put on some other machines. He's wrong of coarse, once explained so well by you, I have used it as it was meant to be. He seemingly can't be convinced how his own machine works. I did give you credit for the info provided to him. When I first got the machine, I emailed him with pictures of several things wrong with the design and assembly. He was kind enough and not too proud to admit I had good suggestions, to the point he would be willing to pay me for the changes I suggested. I don't want any money, just feel I shouldn't have to redo so many obvious flaws. That said, I do think it is a good machine, could be much better if not for cutting pennies from the cost, and dinner kind of quality control before shipping. Thank you again my over seas friend. Tom from northern USA

Hello Dimitris , I have a recommendation regarding your connection of the power strip to the electrical system. When you connect more than one consumer, the current flows through your first wire for the next contacts. The way you connected them if you connect all consumers at the same time and they have current consumption for example 5A/220V (1100 W) then your power cord will have to withstand a current of 20A. This is the wire from the circuit breaker to the first contact schuko. examples 1conductor -20A, 2 conductor -15A, 3 conductor-10A, 4 conductor-5A. When making my board I took this into account and dimensioned the current-carrying wires according to the possible maximum load. Because in practice the load is connected in series. I hope to be of use to you with this recommendation. I believe that safe work is above all else.
@JimmysCanal
@JimmysCanal 3 года назад
Thank you for the comment and your recommendation my friend! Honestly speaking, I don't know anything about electrical connections; my dear friend Kostas who is an Electrical engineer made all the wiring, so I know that what he did is definitely right. Thanks again! All the best Jimmy
@KonstantinosKalleris
@KonstantinosKalleris 3 года назад
Dear friend, Hello and thanks for your comment. I know really well what you are talking about and I knew what I was doing the time of the installation. Generally speaking you would be right in case of thin wires. In our case there is no point to complicate the wiring since the main line from the electrical panel is 16A with a 3x2,5mm² cable. All the connections of the milling machine that I installed have the same size with the main line (3x2,5mm²). So, there is no fear of cable stress because the cables are according to the line fuse of the electrical panel. For currents more than 16A the fuse will trip. On the other hand, the loads will be really low (eg: DRO supply or some lights). I hope you agree. All the best, Kostas
