Using the mill to create accurate parts for your projects is really nice. Although the handwheel dials on all three axis of the machine offers good accuracy, it’s not comparable to a DRO.
I wanted to add a DRO to my mill for quite some time now; this finally became reality! The DRO was gifted to me from a friend and supporter of the channel who wishes to remain anonymous.
In this video I will show the sizes and the lengths of the glass scales I chose for my mill, the brackets I’ve make for the sensors as well as a couple necessary fixes in order for everything to fit properly and run smoothly.
I hope this video will give some extra help to any novice machinists (like me) who wish to add a DRO to their milling machine.
All the best
Jimmy

For many years now I have been creating RU-vid content as and when I could afford to do so. If you are a subscriber, you may have noticed that I have been posting less and less frequently recently.
That is because it has been increasingly challenging for me to do so financially.
Now has come the time when I realize I need help and
support. If you like what I do, any help would be so gratefully accepted.
Your support would enable me to create more and post more frequently.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Hi Dimitris. Apologies for not being able to do this in your native language. You may want to revisit the Y axis sensor mounting. Those two 6mm tapped holes on the cross slide are almost certainly intended to be where two screw in oil nipples should have been installed by the factory. Ideally you would need to try pumping some way oil in through them and see if it shows up on the sliding surfaces. It may be that the proper oil passages were never machined which would be an oversight by the manufacturer. If I am right, and I may not be, it should be easy enough to fix, just drill some more holes of your own but do think where the internal oil passages may be.

Hello Bob, Thank you for your comment! You don't need to apologize, no problem at all. About the 6mm tapped holes you said; I did check both of them when I bought the mill, they are through holes facing the dovetail of the Y axis. Back then I was thinking to add a manual oil pump so I could used these holes (on the right side there are two similar holes, but these are for the Kipp handles to tighten the Y axis). Unfortunately I abandoned the idea as I didn't found other through holes - facing both sides of the dovetails - on the X or the Z axes of the machine. As for oiling the sliding surfaces, I use a brush :) Thank you once again! Best wishes from Greece. Dimitris

You can very easily disassemble and cut down these glass scales. Also be ready, i've have to fix bad solder job on encoder LEDs in 2 of my scales.
