If you have only him, please get him friends! Snails aren't happy all alone, they love company. The problem is, there will be babies, unless you destroy the eggs every time.

Thank you for your input! I was curious if you have some site recommendations that share this info that you might pass along to me? :) I've searched around a lot on this topic and so far, it sounds like snails are pretty neutral in terms that they aren't solitary, but also don't need a companion. He seems very content to be on his own, but my husband and I have talked about possibly adding one more in future. The problem with that is they're hard to tell gender, so we would rather not deal with eggs or babies. Thanks for any info you can share!

Unfortunately I don't know any English websites, only german ones. In Germany, we have a big snail community both for aquatic and land snails (and for many more pets, actually), proper care is a big topic here. We also have books and magazines about mystery snails (they are called apple snails, "Apfelschnecken" in german) - I could recommend some, but again, unfortunately they are only in german available. One example is "Amazonas - Apfelschnecken - Die Familie der Ampullariidae". Depending on the size of your aquarium, spotting the eggs could be possible, and it's rather easy to take them out with a paper towel. And there is a way to control the size of the population (at least a little bit): Don't be too generous with the food 😃 many people overfeed their snails, and they reproduce non stop (of course I don't mean you should starve them, just give them as much as they eat in 30 Minutes). I, personally, think, if you want to have snails, you have to keep in mind there will probably be many eggs and/or babies, and just keeping one snail because it's hard to deal with eggs and babies is not fair. Then it would be better to get a speciem that doesn't reproduce in fresh water (there are pretty ones!). But I know that pet care in different countries is not as "extreme" as in Germany. Your little guy looks healthy and happy, nevertheless, these are just my thoughts and experiences :) I am sure you will find a solution that fits you and I really like your videos, they always show your compassion and wonderful care for your furry or slimy friends!

It's nice to see you and thanks for your comment! :) It's pretty difficult to tell mystery snail genders, but one way is to look at the shape/angle of their shell and the second way is to look at them from the front, if you can get them to pull their head way out of their shell. We haven't done that with Cheeto yet, but his shell looks closer to a male so we're just going with that lol. I remember hearing about Gus Gus and am sorry to hear of his passing, but am glad you still have a kitty to keep you company. ❤ I hope you've had a good 2023 and thanks for saying hi! P.s. No I don't have any other pets yet, but have plans for more in future. Just waiting on the right timing.
