Thank you Diane for your discussion around drawing. I am exactly the person you are talking about-not enough time left at my age to learn to draw well! I continue to try, but SO appreciate your willingness to allow tracing. Yippee!
You are so welcome Penny. We just need to remind ourselves how many people there are out there pretending to be able to paint but using digital methods to deceive. Nothing wrong with tracing a design. Go girl!
Absolutely over worrying about what should or not be said, I often feel our society has become too precious! I love your chats whilst you paint. I can’t draw for quids and so very happy to hear you say that tracing is a good tool to use, especially if it helps us paint. Keep up the great work Diane. ❤
Truly enjoyed this video, Diane. Thank you! To answer your question: I've stopped being inhibited about speaking my truth. With that being said, if I do say what I want ( without censor), I do my best to be as graceful as possible. Sometimes, that's just not possible. As well, it would be a perfect world if everyone could allow discussion without being offended when others don't agree with you. A serious problem that I wish more ppl would work on. Glad to hear that Kuretake will put out a vegan line. Do hope it does not affect the color properties. Always happy when no animal abuse is involved with anything I purchase. Thanks again ❤
Hi Sherelyn and thanks for your thoughts and comments. You’re right, it used to be possible to express an opinion without fear of upsetting people. They were resilient enough to be able to accept an opinion unlike their own. Things have changed. Talking about Kuretake, I don’t think that Kuretake were engaging in any animal abuse. The substance they were using was gelatin, which is derived from animal bones and would be coming from animals that had been slaughtered in the process of the meat industry. I’m vegetarian and would very much like to see larger numbers of people eating less meat, but given that people DO eat meat, it seems to me that using the by products is actually good practice. It’s a really difficult subject to talk about, everyone has a different and valid opinion, and I believe in live and let live whenever possible. So glad you enjoy the channel and happy painting!
Diane, I love this painting and tutorial! It continues to astound me how you just so bravely put down your paint to paper and everything just comes to life! This is so, so sweet! Wishing you and your family a peaceful and lovely Easter.
Thank you so much Carolyn! This is a painting I’ve done many times, so it’s easier to plunge in headfirst! Thanks so much for your comments, and wishing you likewise a happy Easter x
This is the video that has helped my creativity in the area of watercolor just explode. The permission to trace, the information on how to effectively turn any printout into a carbon paper all made my world a better and more creative place. I will be sharing it with a friend soon to give her a chance for the same enjoyment I have found
Love your art work Kuetarke paints are lovely to work with. I love that you say why not to use black because I get sick of people saying don’t use black in art I find it ridiculous to be honest xx
I can’t remember where I heard this…. But…. Tracing for your watercolor paintings is like when someone gives you a recipe and you make it……it might never turn out the same way but it’s your touches and the way you bake it that makes its yummy. Every artist is different and even if you trace, it probably won’t turn out exactly the same as the original. Love your conversations, Diane!
I love your remark….” I finally realized there wasn’t enough time i I my life” I totally y know where you are coming from! I just want to have fun…….I realize I will never be perfect……and that is OK!
It looked like some black stains in the beginning. Unbelievable, it looks like you put just some paint on the paper randomly, and then… beautiful birds! Very pretty
SO much in one "simple" demo! 😍 THANK YOU for your refreshing attitute about painting - it was like you were talking directly to me - about not feeling guilty for tracing someone else's sketch or photo and about using black paint. (I do both - and I have felt rather inadequate for tracing things, even if it's just the general outline of a landscape.) I have read so many articles and books and heard artists talk about how drawing and sketching before painting is so important........Diane, I can barely doodle, let alone draw something! And like you said, I can only learn so many things at once at this stage of the game..........I want to PAINT, not learn to draw! So THANK YOU!😍 I just downloaded the sketch and will trace it WITHOUT GUILT! I haven't painted any birds in a long while, and I love these little swallows! (Interesting about the Kuratake paints - I eat mostly vegetarian, with shrimp and scallops added in sometimes, but I could not give up dairy and eggs. You will have to "muse" about that whole issue another time!😁)
I eat cheese and eggs too, although eggs don’t agree with me, sadly, so I can’t eat many. I prefer to eat vegetarian nowadays partly because of my belief that we don’t need to eat meat, and partly because the quality and price of meat is outrageous and terrible. I would eat some fish but it is a stupid price. Plus it doesn’t work for my histamine intolerance. Anyway, my policy is live and let live. Trace, copy, do whatever you like. Most of the tutors on RU-vid are shamelessly stealing other people’s ideas, I don’t know if many people realise that!
@@DianeAntoneStudio That's terrible about the stealing of other people's designs. I mean, I am so glad you allow us to learn painting by tracing your designs, but I would never pass them off as my original ideas! I always acknowledge the artist I have followed or copied a photo from or whatever. Now that you say that, I HAVE seen random FB feeds with work that looks suspiciously like YOURS. Anyway, I know you're the real deal! (Yes, even on a budget - I do treat myself😍- the seafood, large quantities of fresh fruits and vegetables, bottles of wine.........and, OF COURSE, painting supplies and memberships for a few artists channels like yours!!) Thank you for your message - I'm off to paint the swallows now!
Hi Tracy, I haven’t seen you around on here for a while now and I was just wondering whether things are okay? Hope you are still enjoying painting and that all is well with you in your world xxx
@@DianeAntoneStudio Dear, dear Diane - I am so touched that you reached out!!🥰 I'm here and painting, but had a lot going on the past few months. May I private message you? I just checked your website and it has a "contact" option - is that the best way to message you? I'd love to fill you in, if you don't mind.
I absolutely love this. Birds are my favorite little animal. So glad to see you make it over 100k. I have to get back to painting, it is such good therapy for me, Thank you for sharing this and hope you do enjoy the beautiful weather. Have a lovely day.
Thanks Sundie, glad you’re enjoying the videos and I hope you get those brushes wet soon! I want to ask a question - I have long been wondering about your name. Is it short for something? I’ve never heard Sundie before!
Diane can't thank you enough for the tutorials and the drawings .You make it look so easy. and fun. Love how you broke the painting down into simple steps without fussing about anything. I shall have a go at it using the paints i have on hand.
The swallows are already here in SW Spain so they’re on their way to you. ❤ lovely painting. I’m currently learning to draw and it is very time consuming. I think tracing can help you with drawing.. sometimes no matter how carefully you look at something getting the exact line/angle seems impossible no matter how many times you try.. placing a tracing over the top is an eye opener 😂 especially if you’re learning remotely via the internet.
A million thanks for your message in this tutorial! I don’t know where we got the idea that if you trace, you’re cheating. I shudder to think how many have been discounted from painting altogether! How can we learn otherwise? So, thank you! Also, at 81 this year, I find myself being a bit too verbally honest!!🤪. I love your swallows! ❤️OXOX
I know. It’s bizarre, but there are teachers who come down hard on the idea of learning through copying. I doubt they learnt much themselves if they refused to copy the masters!
I appreciate your discussion on drawing. My neck hurts and very focused movements like drawing cause me pain. I'd rather paint than draw. Maybe you could do a little video on this subject as a pep talk once a week. Love these little birds!!!
Lovely little birds. :-) Your discussion about tracing was helpful. I usually try to draw by looking at a photo (or real object), and on some things it comes out OK, but with some subjects - I'm thinking dogs - I just don't get it. I should try tracing a photo of a dog and going from there.
I find dogs very difficult indeed too. I have a little book called The Right Way to Draw Animals by Mark Linley which is very helpful and goes into just enough detail. Includes dogs. You might be able to find it in a secondhand book shop online for example, or something similar. Sometimes tracing a photo doesn’t help much, because of the shadows and perspective. Tracing a line drawing is easier and more effective I think. What bugs me is when some teachers say you can build a bird or any animal out of circles and ovals. Yes, you can, but beginners need more help than that! Have fun!
Love this , our tree swallows just came back in Pennsylvania ..will paint these and next our barn swallows will be back ( we have a high barn we open the doors for them ) I so appreciate your content
Just amazing how quickly they started looking like birds diane. i'am just in awe of you! Do you not worry about copyright issues by tracing? I do. Enjoyed this very much!! Hugs! deb
Hi Deb, I suppose I’m talking about people tracing my work, for which I give unreserved permission to trace or copy. I don’t trace other peoples work and any photos I might trace - although I don’t do that much anymore - I make sure they are copyright free. I’m not really talking about the issue of copyright when I say it’s okay to trace, I’m purely talking about the artistic side of it LOL.
I have tried Pentel and gellyroll white pens and honestly haven’t found them much good. Gellyrolls are a bit better. I guess it depends on what paper you’re using. I definitely trace things. I can doodle but I’m too old to master drawing! Yeah…who wants to bother being politically correct! Your swallows are gorgeous.
Have you heard of the Swallows of San Juan Capistrano in California. There’s even a song about them, written in 1940! What is the story of the swallows of Capistrano? The swallows of San Juan Capistrano made the Mission and the city world famous. The Capistrano birds are Cliff Swallows, which have probably been returning to the area for centuries. They transferred their nests to the eaves of the Mission when it was built near two rivers.
@@DianeAntoneStudio do you know when they will switch into using the new ingredient? I was thinking maybe I should buy another set before they start making them with the new ingredient. 😢
I love your tutorials, but it disappoints me, you don't feel you can relay your thoughts and beliefs without reprisal. I'm of an age, that I don't care to make others comfortable. It's more fun to be interesting and honest than polite. In other words, you have wonderful stories and I hope you will share more while you paint! 😊
Thanks so much for your comments Jennifer! I don’t know how many of my videos you’ve watched but I think you’ll find as you explore them, that I am pretty outspoken, but one has to be careful not to annoy the Artificial Intelligence that controls the way the videos on RU-vid are shown to people. As my channel grows in size, so I can talk more freely about issues like veganism without damaging the access people have to the channel. I’m sure you understand this! In real life I have often been labelled as unacceptable in the way I speak my mind!!!! Thanks for taking the time to comment, and know I am in agreement with your principle of open speech!
