Imagine a nation comprised of powerful adventurers, every one of them leveled up, packing magic items claimed while seeking out their place in the world. Now reduce the nation 50% in size and you've got the Five Shires. The Mystaran halfling nation comprised of pastoral and peace loving farmers and tinkers that will shank you without hesitation if you disturb their calm. Like the Shire, but populated by hardened veterans of untold campaigns.

Mystaran halflings are some of the very few halflings from TSR to shake off the "Hobbit clone" dust, alongside Dark Sun's Rhulesti (Rhulisti? Whatever), and it really shows that there can be something done with these guys that's interesting. Were Ghostwise halflings, the ElfQuest expy, a thing back then, or not until 3e? Honestly, I'm using halflings as the result of crossbreeding between humans and dwarves in my Victoriana-inspired D&D setting, with two subraces that were forcibly bred by the dragons for their usefulness as servants, but maybe there's something I can take from Mystara's hin...

I like this take on halflings. it both pays conceptual homage to thier tolkien ancestors, but also takes a new twist on their concept. its almost like a whole nation of bilbos, frodos, and Tooks instead of normal homebody hobbits! a homely lot that eventually gets the urge to adventure before returning with their treasures and stories. But their nation isnt just a peaceful one, but one made by sweat and arms and piracy, and vigilent and somewhat paranoid because of that. It feels like a development of the hobbit idea without being a copy or a full rejection/subversion of it. And thats my preferred kind of balance to strike!

I am a pathfinder "native" admittedly but I do like dnd settings. I don't entirely know how I got here but I have been watching these videos up to this and the world is very interesting. And I like it. (Even if I haven't fully grasped the spheres of the immortals).

Cool video. I don’t have this Gazetteer, and now I think I’ll pick it up. The history makes them a lot interesting than the standard Tolkien-esq version.

Ever read Weber’s War God series? (I think Oath of Swords is still on Baen’s free library.) interesting take on halfings, being the mutated survivors of a magical war. First encounter with them has them threatening to carve up a paladin several times their size if he doesn’t get off their boat.

It may be that this didn't make it to your 5e conversion, but I always found it interesting that once Masters reach high enough level in BECMI, they spend more time in the form of an animal (via spell) than in their hin form, so that they can keep an eye on the Shires without people coming running to them every time there's a problem to the point that they are dependent.

A Dwarf, an Elf and a Human walk into a bar; the Hin laughs and walks under it. The Hin have always been a beloved race to me. I lost count how many copies I made of the Gazzetteer to scribe notes. One of my three oldest characters (played for decades) is a Hin; the other two are a Half-Elf and Human. I did tweek the Masters and Blackfire use for a special allowance to use their abilities outside of the Shires if on a path of immortality. Have you seen their alternative history in VoP?

I do like alternate halfling takes, I like how Warhammer does them even if I recognize they're a pretty hateful Moorcock inspired anti-countryfolk screed turning Tolkien on its head.

What annoys me is that this is one of the gazetteers that isn't available in print on DrivethruRPG recently got northern reaches, karmikos, glantri, rockhome and atrugan so wanted it for the shelf, its strange given the author I'd thought it would be the most likely to be in print. Question on mad musing would you consider doing Chainmail or is it too much of a wargame?

Took me awhile to find it the post was 9 years old. My computer also kept sending me to hour of the Raven. The nation itself is not without drive but it's spread out across the book. They could have gone more into the disputes between the guilds but most of the interior struggles you will find are actually more in the descriptions of the places. The focus on the skill system in all the possible jobs with a bit excessive and could have been replaced with more fluff
@johnbalk6091

@@Mr_Welch Yeah, that was my fault. Sorry. I just liked his take on the fact that there wasn't any kind of dark secret, or sticky internal politicization. You know, like veiled racism towards certain nations or peoples, outright distrust or disdain for less diplomatic action etc. It was a little jarring that they wouldn't have any REAL enemies.
