Favorite lines: "If you speak German you should recognize 'cheval' as the French word for horse." "If you're going to have a backstory you might as well make it multiple choice."
Oh, man...my DM in 4th grade was obsessed with Thouls. It got to the point where every time we fought hobgoblins, my Elf was assigned to "Thoul duty" since he couldn't be paralyzed and we knew there would be at least one.
Ah, the Thoul! The most notable typo related monster in D&D history. For those not aware, the Thoul was created when a writer misspelled Ghoul, and decided to make it a new monster: part Troll, part Ghoul, all Hobgoblin.
"Mujina" is Japanese for "Badger", and one of many creatures in Japanese folklore renowned for its shapeshifting powers. Also "badger" and "bear" are sometimes used as synonyms for other types of mammal, such as the tanuki.
Fawking love this updated vid. Last but not least the Thull has harried my group several times. At Lo Lo wholesale have to avoid or bargain with it. And mid-level they help it defeat a common enemy. At high-level they betray it first and suffer the fallout. Perfect reoccurring foil.
RU-vid appropriate comment for algorithm interaction, plus i really enjoy these, we had some of gazetters back when a friend got a copy of the 2nd AD&D manual from a garage sale, but we didn't really understand about Mystara. We were in Junior High at the time so game shops were few and far between along with no money. This channel has been great
I really enjoy how you describe the mystara stuff... can you please create a Galantri series? I have subcribed to your channel. Its just too good to miss.
Where has this setting been all my life ... I've been aware of the thoul and juggernaut for a while now but between this and the flying calvery ... Holy shit
No Wryds? I would have thought you’d go ape shit talking about undead elves! Oh well. Also, no mention of the Bhut? Those are awesome. More shapeshifters! So glad you mentioned the Hivebrood. I love throwing those at my players when they get to a high level and they start thinking that their shit doesn’t stink. I’ll have them stop by a remote village or have them sent there by a local lord or something, then BAM! It’s Aliens in D&D and they have to fight and run and scramble to simply stay alive. Great creature to keep players humble. Just as you like the Grey Philosopher, l love the Darkhood, or Rorphyr. I was a little surprised that when you spoke about constructs, you didn’t mention Iron Gargoyles. Love those. Also also, the Soul Eater! Super cool. Which book has the stats for the enormous elephants with 8 trunks? I don’t see it in the Rules cyclopedia or the Creature Catalog. Great video! Stay safe Glen, Texas is the new hot zone!
I had to cut the list off somewhere. The problem with bhuts is Mystara has 8 shapeshifters, they get lost in the mix. Bodendruker was in the green cover of the Creature Catalog. There's about 20 creatures that appear in the red or the green but not both.
Pocket Dragon. A dragon the size of a house cat that still acts like a dragon. They're independent, aloof, territorial, prideful, vengeful little bastards that every who has ever encountered has been mildly maimed by or befriended for life and will willingly die and kill for. So they're house cats, but can fly. Arguably more dangerous in the long run than a full dragon.
have you considered doing a video on the fiction and publishing of Mystara as after viewing this I feel it would be very easy for a campain villain to engine disasters thruogh media hoaxes.
Wait wait wait.... I usually love you for your accuracy but I do take issue with your portrayal of the Kopru. The answer to the Aboleth? Although the Aboleth were never used in Mystara, they were used in the Savage Tide Adventure Path which centers much of the mid-levels of the campaign around the Isle of Dread with a plot involving both the Aboleth and the Kopru. In this (Greyhawk) setting the Aboleth have long had a city beneath the Isle of Dread (Golismorga). Love this section of the story as is establishes that Aboleths do make cities. Since it has been established that the Isle of Dread can phase from one plane/setting to another - I assumed Golismorga was also retconned into Mystara. I can't remember my Isle of Dread lore at the moment on if there is just the one or if there are now multiple Isles of Dread. *eye roll towards Wizards* Second, I know you were just joking about the Kopru and Walruses breeding together but unless one is already familiar with the creature the viewer might not know that is a joke. Finally, I thought the collapse of the Koprus was due to elves and also a mixture of disease and the collapse of the food source that allows them to become increasingly intelligent, the kopura mollusk. These factors weakened the Kopru and coupled with the elven resistances and the elves working with other races to overthrow the kopru the empire ended. Is this right or am I mixing up non-canon material with canon material? I know I have left plenty of details out as well but was trying not to spend an hour or so digging through various books. Maybe I should have. Love what you do, just geeking out a little on one of my favorite monsters. The Dungeon (or was it Dragon?) article on the Kopru is great and really does lots to establish the importance of the Kopura Mollusk as central to Kopru culture - and if you are *never* going to play it as a PC, a full read of Chapter 6 of the Savage Tide is an often overlooked but important development for the Isle of Dread as a whole. Fun fact, without Kopura the Kopru do not "sit and fume waiting a return" b/c if they have Kopura they are actively working towards domination and if they don't have Kopura it seems as though they don't do much of anything. A full history of the kopru, aranea, and/or phanaton might be a fun topic(s). Thanks for the videos! Also, now that you've told us a couple of times - no need to let us know every time the video is a a re-upload. You can even cover your tracks with that in the video description with a parenthesis after the title such as (updated upload).
I meant in terms of the 'mind-controlling eldritch abomination' the kopru and abolith fill the same niche, and and since kopru were placed in Mystara that the abolith didn't have a role available. The fall of the kopru were detailed largely in Sea Peoples iirc, and the elemental chaos that rearranged the continents did badly effect the kopru, but their power was already on the decline because of their slave revolt.
Ok, hold up, if I speak German I will know that its french for horse? I'll have to use that in a similar manner in the future. Thank you for the mind boggle
@@Mr_Welch I'm mildly confused about the context to the reply, although I am surprised to have gotten a response nonetheless. I remember losing a few characters to level drain or similar effects in my early forays into dnd back in 2012. I do miss it as a threat in 5e
@@MilitaryStyx level drain in the middle of play was a nightmare to calculate because you have to go back and undo several aspects of the character. Hit points, saving throws, spells, skills it brought the game to a halt for a player who has to redo their character sheets then and there.
They've had about half a dozen versions since their introduction and present day. Instead of costing hit points to create one like 5E originally the cost to create one was prohibitive, so you only saw them with powerful wizards with money to burn.
I believe they first appeared in Castle Amber, which was definitely the early codifier of their traits. Trying to bare-knuckle box one was an ... experience.
Nice attempt at Welsh. The 'y' in Cymraeg is pronounced like 'uh', but it was otherwise pretty close. Not a criticism; just thought you might like to know.
