Level drain is a reason why I never had a character make it to 4th level until 3rd edition. GM considered it a personal failure that he wasn't able to prevent my character reaching 6th. I stopped playing with that group...

I played this back in the late 80’s.. party was average 8th level.. think party of six. Dragon turtle was rough.. vampire was tough.. my 9th level fighter built a castle on the island you got at the end.

DREDD was fantastic, though.

I wasn't a fan of level drains either, but in retrospect it mirrored life. Sometimes you got knocked back a bit and have to get back up to keep going. Without getting much deeper than that, it is a noticeable difference in the various editions. The older ones taught you more life skills. Well at least that's my two coppers worth.

From the description on the back of the adventure and this review, this honestly sounds awesome.

I honestly really like that not everything is spelled out. I can come up with why my players were in this part of the world and all that.

The back of the DrivethruRPG PDF does give the princess a name...It's the only place I'm seeing that does give her a name, but she does have a name. The description from the back: "The Ierendi princess, Corinna, has disappeared. She set sail aboard a ship of the Minrothad Guilds-the guild's ships which have been pirated and plundered for many weeks. Trade is horribly disrupted as many ships leave, never to be seen again. The guild masters now call for adventurers of great skill and renown. They offer small fortunes to any who can help them discover who is pirating their ships. But most importantly, to any who can rescue the princess. Can you and your party of adventurers defeat the dangers which lurk in the dark depths of a terrifying sea? Or, will you find a watery grave within the cold confines of a murky sea floor? This game adventure contains special rules for underwater adventuring."

The way I played it in my games is that PCs had to forge an alliance with a clerical order of some denomination. The attutude of desiring to be sacreligious and believe they could get away with it mysteriously vanished as the game progressed. Strange huh, lol. There were only two or three clerics per country that could do a restore spell and this set up very powerful motivation and intrigue.

I wouldn't mind a level drain that was slower, something that drained experience with each hit so that the 10th or so might be equivalent to one level. But the 1st edition drain was just insane. Like ten game sessions to gain a level, THUD, gone in one round.
