Theater producer Margo Lion conceived to of Hairspray as a stage musical in 1998 after seeing the 1988 movie on television. She contacted the 1988 movie's creator John Waters who gave her his blessing. I'm glad that Waters likes the musical. He says he likes how high schools all across the country play his characters. As interesting as the 1988 film is, it seems to work better as a musical. It just helps make the story flow better. The 1988 movie did have plenty of dancing, but singing while dancing makes it even better. The songs gave these characters more life. More lovability. Truly one of the best musicals ever made. While people grew up on Grease, this is my kind of musical.
John Travolta did such an amazing job as Mrs Turnblat that i honestly forget that it's a man playing a woman. I know traditionally in the play and musical the role is often filled by a man for comical purposes but it's honestly amazing how well Travolta made the role so believable as well as comical.
I love how Edna walked down the stairs did a cute lil spin and was like "ok thats enough, going back in the house now" 😂😂😂 Tracy was like nope. Bring your butt out here now lol
I'm so glad the Dynamites actresses were given this entire number. We only got to hear them at the end of the first song, but they absolutely shined here.
I love this song, my six year old had a huge hairspray phase and this song definitely resonated with me. I love seeing the liberation in the characters and the jubilation they showed on screen occasionally brings me to tears.
exactly! Idk why they must turn every musical into pop and take away from the original Broadway quality. The mean girls movie musical could have been incredible
I love this movie. Absolutely feel bad for Edna because the poor lady has such low self esteem due to being a big woman and not fitting into the beauty standards of her time so I love the part where pinky compliments her about being Tracy’s sister. Also Tracy is a sweetheart helping her mom with her confidence especially considering it’s normally the mom helping her daughter with her confidence so it’s nice seeing it the other way around. This is definitely my favorite song.
This number always makes me tear up with joy and a bittersweet feeling "Your mama's looking at herself and wondering where you been?" she spent so long trapped by her insecurities and she finally found the confidence to be free that night
Am I the only one literally crying? I never realized how wholesome and touching this song/scene is … Tracy helped her Ma be free and proud in her own skin 💘🥹🥹
Biggest regret- high school. 2014. Missed auditions for Tracy and never living it down. Ten years later I’m in my bedroom dancing around like I should’ve in my audition 😢 lmao sad
Lol Tracy got changed quickly, but when they pulled back the curtains, they found Edna still changing John was hilarious in this movie. Edna was so sweet and sensitive
i feel like what made this movie was actual decent and outstanding singing chops on part of the performers, i remember wanting to watch the mamma mia movie because i like abba, but my god they sung horribly.
Absolutely. The problem with too many movie musicals Is they cast big names without making sure they can actually sing. Or they hamper the singers somehow like Hugh Jackman in Les Mis sounding like he had cotton in his cheeks the whole movie (Greatest showman proves the man has pipes

I love the John Water touches like showing how society really was messed up in comical ways 😂 admittedly Hairspray lacked the charm that this version captured but he did Crybaby immense justice that Hairspray could have had
People care more about trying to make some cringe modern political statement instead of allowing media, such as musical movies, be an escape from reality.
This musical has had me in a chokehold since I was 5 years old. Every birthday since then I've screened it with my girlfriends. So much good energy! Happiness is contagious :)
