In this episode of the podcast, Sam Harris speaks with Tristan Harris about the ways in which social media is fracturing society.
They discuss:
the rise in teen depression and suicide
political polarization
conspiracy theories
information warfare
the decoupling of power and responsibility
the distinctions between platforms and publishers
the cancellation of Alex Jones
social media inspired ethnic cleansing
concerns about the upcoming presidential election
culture as an operating system
and other topics
Called the “closest thing Silicon Valley has to a conscience,” by The Atlantic magazine, Tristan Harris spent three years as a Google Design Ethicist developing a framework for how technology should “ethically” steer the thoughts and actions of billions of people from screens. He is now co-founder & president of the Center for Humane Technology, whose mission is to reverse ‘human downgrading’ and re-align technology with humanity. Additionally, he is co-host of the Center for Humane Technology's Your Undivided Attention podcast with co-founder Aza Raskin. He also recently appeared as a central figure in the recently released Netflix documentary The Social Dilemma.

The one thing I notice is that the algorithm seems dispassionate; its seems to reflect the nature of the human interacting with it. This issue is actually very deeply philosophical imo.. the tech and social media problems are manifestations of fundamental maladaptations of our moral philosophies. Altruism and Religions have turned the majority of social collectivists into narcissists that faithfully worship their leaders and brutally condemn their enemies. Being connected via social media will not help us if we are misled against each other and taught to deny the truth, and reason, for the sake of blind faith and trust in those that do not prove their claims. Jordan Peterson is a good example of a seemingly intelligent mind that is totally overcome with faith-based mysticism and altruistic servitude to other’s, religion and the State etc. Ayn Rand and other Objectivists are necessary to learn from if we hope to eventually have full individual rights for all before the law; rather than wait for our lying leaders to bestow us with the rights that we know are inherently inalienable.

Hurt. I used to be on social media constantly all day, was alcoholic, neurotic, out of shape, and all together self destructive. I quit all social media a little over two years ago and the effects have been profound. I barely drink, am in amazing shape, quit smoking and other drugs, started reading and studying and have developed passionate interests in a plethora of intellectual topics, and my mental health is at a level I never thought possible. Social media is destroying our society and creating a generation of pathologically resentful people, we are likely going to walk through very dark times and it is the combination of social media as well as mental conditioning brought on through mainstream media and academia that is to blame. But all is not lost, society is weak because we’ve had it good, people will strengthen as we’re forced to endure.

@amorfati4927
@amorfati4927 3 года назад
This is the explanation I give to people that don’t understand what is going on. The majority of people literally are spoon fed their “beliefs” based on a meme, 30 second video or a one sentence post. I do find an ultimate irony just along in Sam Harris’ prologue is his disdain for Trump and how plenty of the blame is on Trump. While being fairly neutral on Trump myself, there is no doubt that he one of the most misquoted, caricatured, wrongly blamed and honestly flat out lied about person that I can think of. Simple unbiased research results in 30 seconds show most the things about what he says or does is false. He gets dragged through the mud for good things or right decisions that he does (i.e. called a racist for cutting off travel to and from China for COVID or being nominated for 2 and now maybe a 3rd Nobel peace prize with even people that nominate him say they don’t care for him but you cannot ignore how big of accomplishments they are). He tends to be correct about many of the things that people drag him through the mud for talking about (mail in voting being the most current one where you can see articles and people taking pictures of all and talking about ballots they’re getting from other people on top of articles of ballots not being counted or lost in primaries). Then on top of there’s people like Maxine Waters for just one little example of a rally saying “If you see these people here tell them they’re not welcome here or anywhere.” That is a widespread statement on the left in different words by many of their leaders shown by many people in the streets currently. Yet Trump is the big problem that needs to take blame. The man can be off putting, but to be in denial that others have as much if not more of the blame for literal heavily divisive rhetoric shows that intellegencia have these same problems while even knowing that they are problems.
@randallanderson1632
@randallanderson1632 3 года назад
@@amorfati4927 Sam Harris worries that Trump will get re-elected at least to some extent because he is so unfairly treated by the media. I have said that if I had lived in cave for the few years leading up to the "Trump years", and if I then listened to the media's profound negativity concerning Trump, I would think that Trump must be a guy who constantly shouts racial slurs and goes out at night and spray paints swastikas on neighborhood garage doors. Still, I want Trump to go. But I am not thrilled by the prospect of Biden.

Then one has to get into understanding the robustness of the data acquisition, model construction, and model testing process. Too exhausting for a typical individual to master if he/she wants to cover the entirety of life's complexity. I am more concerned as to how we restore higher level of integrity in ourselves, our experts and institutions, and eventually, more public trust.
@davidlovesyeshua
@davidlovesyeshua 3 года назад
As others have said, there's simply too much data, too many "simple facts" (and extremely complex facts) for ordinary people to sort through them all in order to have a directly well informed opinion on the myriad topics of relevance to modern civilization. Reliance on experts sorting through the sea of data on their subject matter are unfortunately necessary, which is why intelligent people like Sam Harris are often so worried about things like institutional stability, public trust of experts, expert competence, and as in this video, the information ecosystem we are forced to inhabit out of pragmatic necessity.

Plus, despite a weak thinly veiled attempt, it was heavily slanted to the left: for instance there was no comment about censorship of conservative voices, all of the protest videos that demonstrated social division were of the the handful of instances that the right was out protesting the lock down as opposed to the left burning the country down since May and there were several clips showing cnn as some kind of source of authority. The only thing they did that was good or brave was bring Johnathan Haidt on.

The social dilemma shouldn’t surprise anyone. Social media is the evolution of consumerism from news paper ads, radio ads & t.v. Ads from days of yore. What I find funny is the surprise of individuals when they watch this “social media is so bad!” And at the same time run to it and post why it’s bad. I turned the show off in about 15 minutes. The reason was my involvement in the marketing world. This isn’t new. As a matter of fact, this issue is a result of every single one of us. You are the problem because you turn it on. We try to make this thing, social media as the big bad problem but it’s everyone of us that use this. You are the problem. I am the problem. Take responsibility to use social media responsibly as if you were handling a firearm. It can be seen as something for just fun but that ends when blood is drawn. Do we blame the gun or do we blame the person? In our world today blame is easier than taking responsibility.

While it is still very difficult for people to come together even when they have the same information it becomes impossible for people to come together when they have different information, and it is very important that society does come to a consensus on difficult political topics.Without truth, conversation, and ultimately consensus there is no democracy and everything falls apart. I have an acquaintance that tells me that democracy is on the way out and that leaders need to, "rise above the unwashed masses". I somewhat agree with his diagnosis that democracy is falling apart, but I disagree with his explanation for why it is happening. I belive that social media and misinformation are breaking down social cohesion and that break down is what is destabilizing democracy, whereas my acquaintance belives that the collapse of democracy is inevitable and that coporate autocracies are the future. What they're suggesting is that belief systems are becoming more and more aggregated and therefore more antagonistic towards each other, because we no longer have a shared reality of information. We instead have bubble realities that encourage further separation and aggregation of bubble realities.

I feel like at times they're conflating technological advancement with social media, Tristan in particular. He framed it at times as if they were synonymous in terms of the negative effects on people's thinking he's speaking about, but from personal experience having kinda fell off of using Facebook before Twitter was even a thing, the social media element specifically is the driver of the issues they're talking about, and it shouldn't be conflated with even the internet in general. I've experienced a pretty consistent self-driven trend more and more towards honesty, to myself intellectually and in talking to others, and I've come to an opinion that honesty alone could push us a long way in the right direction if we embraced it as a species. This has come during the proliferation of social media, and yet the epistemological effect I'VE experienced during this period has been only in a positive direction. I'm just saying don't knock the internet because of Twitter, because I think having access to the broader internet excluding social media has been part of my epistemological growth.

One variable missed from the discussion is that the cost of broadcasting our ideas has become zero. We navigate life with models of reality. Models that we are able to sell to more minds become stronger in our mind. There is a biological compulsion to engage in selling of our ideas. That is why we write books, run podcasts, host talks. That is why I am writing this comment. Zero broadcast cost also means that the competition in the market of ideas is intense. People are looking for clever, sometimes crazy ways, to gain market share. I would argue that people, not AI or business models of social media companies, is feeding the craziness. Like the virus this is new and seems unstoppable. But like the virus we will soon adapt and stabilize. Many of us have been addicted and burnt, but we have managed to escape with little effort. More and more of us are easily able to recognize someone's desperate attempt to get likes, get forwards, get retweets. On a slightly different note I think we are misguided about the power of AI. And one reason why AI is selling in the market of ideas is because of its name. Artificial Intelligence. In reality AI is statistics on steroids. Imagine if we chose to call AI "Super Stats" instead of AI. Would we still be as excited? Just look at the self-driving problem. After over a decade and billions of dollars invested, we are still to see a vehicle, at any price point, that can drive me 2 miles to the Walmart store by itself. Investment in Super Stats is only showing us that we have completely underestimated our own competence.

A.I. will write the story based solely on YOU, and A.I. will know how to write any news story to manipulate you... Mass misinformation will soon confuse everyone and turn one against another deliberately....

Gary Kasparov did complain that the computer was allowed to analyze all his games in the past but he did not get to do the same. He did not know how the computer was going to play or even get a feel what was coming. In a way, he was playing "blind".

The separate information streams leading to different realities is real and a genuine problem. One idea is to have a RU-vid mode where you get fed the information stream from people completely on the opposite side, so Sam could turn on "Anti-RU-vid" and see the same videos that the flat earthers etc. are seeing. Maybe you could even swap information streams with the people in your life as a kind of social media feature. I don't know if it would be successful though as it may not be taken up voluntarily because people might not want to engage with videos that directly contradict their reality. It seems like a good intellectual exercise though, it would introduce people to new ideas at least and I think it would be an interesting feature.

Somehow we in the US have survived newspaper, radio and television...lots of ads and bad programming. Since the early 1900's, the Spanish Flu and the Great Depression. We survived Dracula, Frankenstein and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Two world wars, plus Korea, Vietnam and Iraq. Our world is always being pulled and pushed by something/someone. I suspect we'll survive social media too.

I think Sam is misguided to put the bulk of the blame on Trump. The LEAST we can say about the far left is that they are equal partners in this.
@SteveSmith-fh6br
@SteveSmith-fh6br 3 года назад
@@apikecalledmike I would say that Trump is a product of the far left. If it weren't for their insanity, we probably would not have him as President. The problems that this country is currently facing are entirely the fault of years of the far left having free reign so much so that their ideologies have become mainstream. This started long before Trump. So yeah, trying to place the majority of the blame on him seems pretty out of touch and biased to me.

I think I can credit youtube with busting me out of a lazy single news source (guardian) news consumption and into an appreciation of wide debate, history of thought, IDW style conversation. Maybe i was at a certain age, but it's been invaluable to me. I found a few dead ends of course, but mainstream media never helped me to really test those limits to see where where I felt confident in my own instincts and (and acceptance of data), and where I put my hands up and say I don't know. The sheer access to so many viewpoints necessitates a study of the movements that led to them, but it's been fascinating journey. Is there a way we can develop some cultural tools to assess sources, to develop rationality, and grow wise to hits?
