Traction on the cheap! This is a cheap alternative to spools or lockers. Tips and tricks for welding up differentials of all kinds and how to make them last. This is commonly known as a Lincoln locker (Lincoln because of the Lincoln electric welding company)
Which is the strongest axle? You might be surprised...
In this episode go over how to weld a Dana 60 differential, weld a sterling 10.5 differential, and weld a 14 bolt differential. Technically I'm showing an Eaton HO72 differential but it's basically the same.

Had a 1960’s dana 60 powerlock that had 4 spider gears.

Haven't seen one of those. There was a lot of interesting Dana stuff in that closed-knuckle era that changed as they became the standard through the 70's and beyond. Thanks for watching!

Great video, i swapped those ford axles into my 1/2 ton and have always wanted to lock the front when offroading since "everyone says" just weld it. but as a noob, this was very informative, thank you!!!

Thanks man! Yeah plenty of Toyotas run welded diffs. What's nice about the 8" is you could have a welded third member and an open one- open for normal driving and swap in the welded one for trail runs. Not something you'd want to do every weekend but I've seen guys swap those Toyota thirds like a Nascar pit crew haha

Is it possible to weld a 14 bolt while it's still in the case? Can I stick a rod in the oiling window and send it? Need it to work just a few times...
@WebWheeler

If you aren't worried about it holding together for long, it's worth a try haha. That carrier wont be usable anymore though if you wanted to switch to a Detroit or anything that reuses the 14 bolt carrier. Good luck!

Definitely get some practice in before welding on your diff haha! You might find that you start to understeer pretty bad too but as with everything, it's a trade-off. Good luck!

@WebWheeler

Yeah the third member axles are great for being versatile like that. Especially the toyotas- even the front thirds can be swapped out super quick

More eaton videos, in my opinion they're better then the 14 bolt except the cost of parts but they did come with Detroit lockers and the 14 bolt Detroit lockers do drop in but you have to switch to the 14 bolt axle shafts with 1/4 inch cut off

why not just use acetone and never have to worry about whats right or wrong chemical? id never spray brake clean tp preb a weld it just seems risky due to the fact idk whats the right one its 50/50 acetone just seems no fail lol.
@WebWheeler
@WebWheeler 13 дней назад
Acetone is great but can be a pain if you're trying to weld something with a lot of irregular surfaces or crevices. Hosing the parts with brake cleaner tends to be the easier way so it's how lots of people do it, which is why I made it a point to mention it in the video. Thanks for watching!

hello webwheeler I would like to know what is the sprocket on the outside of the ring gear ??? pardon my ignorance??
@WebWheeler
@WebWheeler 5 лет назад
No worries! Happy to answer questions. That is the tone ring for the ABS system- basically there is a magnetic sensor on the axle housing that uses the teeth on the tone ring to detect the speed the that the axle is spinning. Im going to make another video that covers it a little more in depth pretty soon. Thanks a lot for watching!

On the sterling 10.5 they have little plates that mesh on the teeth of the carrier, are they needed when it's welded or don't they serve a purpose anymore?
@WebWheeler
@WebWheeler 3 года назад
You mean the bearing plates (look like cupped washers) that sit between the spider gears and the carrier? I like to keep them in to keep everything nice and tight but no they aren't needed and don't really serve any purpose once the diff is welded haha

In your opinion which rear axle is stronger? The 14 bolt or 10.5 sterling .
@WebWheeler
@WebWheeler 3 года назад
The 10.5 Sterling has pinion issues until 2011 when they switched to 37 spline. Only drawback with the 2011+ is you can only get gears as low as 4.88. As far as pure strength, I would say the newer 10.5's and the 14 bolts are really close, but overall when considering other factors (gear availability, parts, simplicity, cost, etc.) the 14 bolt wins in the true breaker. Only other problem is they are both huge housings haha. If that's a factor, the Dana 70 is best for compact strength. Things like abs sensors, brakes, e brakes, etc factor in to what is best for a certain project but as far as the axle that has proven itself to handle crazy abuse, the 14 bolt is king
@brianhaw9398
@brianhaw9398 3 года назад
Thanks for the reply. Just looking at a possible future build. Are you aware if the bolt pattern on 14 bolt is available on a dana 60 front?
@WebWheeler
@WebWheeler 3 года назад
The older Dana 60s and 14 bolts are 8x6.5" but if you're looking at the new metric Dana 60 axles, Artec industries sells super duty Dana 60 unit bearings that are drilled for the stock 8x170mm and 8x6.5 wheel patterns, which would match the 8x6.5 on 14 bolts 👍

No point in welding diffs anymore.. you can buy spools for all of these for under $200 which are gonna have even stronger pins.. I wouldn’t weld or spool a 60 cause if the cross pin design.. but the sterling’s and bolts are soo much easier to just drop a spool in then deal with welding them up. If You are gonna weld one up.. spend $10 on anti splatter spray and spray it on the bearings and pins and nothing will stick to them..
@WebWheeler
@WebWheeler 4 года назад
Not everyone has the budget to spend $200+ on a spool when a welded diff is practically free with a little extra work
@Bodeesafa
@Bodeesafa 3 года назад
@@WebWheeler agree with both statements. However, this point about antisplatter spray is spot on and would’ve gone really far in saving you time. First video of yours I’ve watched, will check out more. Good job on being so thorough

i would of saved 20.30 mins,& just say,dont do it.period.im sure 300 bucks for a lunch box is a better option.with no damage.
@WebWheeler
@WebWheeler 4 года назад
A lunchbox locker is not a better alternative to a welded diff. 37"+ tires or big horsepower will blow a lunchbox locker and/or your carrier so it ends up costing way more than $300 and puts your "no damage" idea out the window. A diff that is welded correctly can handle all the tire and HP you can throw at it. If it's not what you need, then don't do it on your rig. Saying "get a lunchbox locker and don't weld it" is a ridiculous generalization and is plain wrong
