As was mentioned it goes much further back but many don't even know that Ritchie Blackmore was scalloping Strats even before1970 or that John McLaughlin played a scalloped Gibson ES 345 guitar in his One Truth Band in late 70's.

@@EpictheEpicest Yes I know but I don't want to switch necks on a guitar....I think it would be very hard to find a quality scalloped neck with stainless steel frets for anywhere near $100
@EpictheEpicest
@EpictheEpicest 4 года назад
@@garyz0611 You can find used Warmoth ones on eBay/Reverb all the time for around that price. Also, stainless steel doesn't necessarily = quality, SS is only an improvement over nickel if you use nickel strings, and nickel strings will need to be changed more often with SS frets. You can also just keep the original guitar neck and swap it back later if you want to sell the guitar. Wouldn't you rather pay $100 to upgrade a guitar you already have than spend $800-1000 on a whole new guitar just for the neck?

A lot more players than you might imagine would love a scalloped fret version of a couple of Chapman guitar models. ;) It's frustrating to be stuck with either a Fender YJM or Blackmore, Warmoth or boutique models. Oh and Rob, you've improved a LOT since the first time I watched you on Anderton's. Precision, articulation, advanced scales, ... Great!

My parents bought me my first 'proper' guitar for my 18th birthday, a Yngwie Strat (I didn't even know who he was at that point!) 14 years later it's still my most played guitar, something about playing a scalloped fretboard is just sooo good. Chapman should definitely make one!

Thank you. I found the part about the history of fretboard scalloping particularly interesting. While serving a tour in Samsun, Turkey during my U.S. Air Force days, I purchased a Turkish balagma as a keepsake in a small hole-in-the-wall shop. The balagma was hand-made and the frets were formed by wrapping the neck with thin plastic cord. I managed to learn a few notes but, nowadays, my balagma is only used as a wall-hanging conversation piece since I don't want to risk breaking one or more of the frets. Here, in Wisconsin, it's not easy to find a luthier who could refret a balagma. Just thought you might find this interesting.

Rob, I took the leap in 1996, when I traded my 1971 USA Gibson Les Paul Deluxe Tobacco Burst, for a mint, Midnight Wine1989 USA Fender Stratocaster, with a scalloped deluxe maple neck, hot pickups, & locking tuners. The Gibson was also mint, until my nephew tripped over it & broke the headstock off.. I had it professionally repaired, but I just didn't like to play it any more. I really like my Fender with the scalloped fretboard. It plays like a dream, but it took a little while to get used to . In 2015, I bought a new Gibson Les Paul 💯 Deluxe Goldtop, with the wider neck, & G-Force tuning system, to replace my old 1971 Deluxe. I like the 2015 Deluxe much better than my old 1971 Les Paul Deluxe. I will give the sceptics some free advise on the advanced technology, "You're down on whatever you're not up on".. My dad told me that in 1966. I like older whiskey, younger women, faster cars , and some newer guitars 🍀🌞🥃🎸🎶🎤🎹🥁🎸💪😎🤳🍀

Hi! Love your content & know this is a "old" video, but just newly got curious on scalloped fretboards :) I've always been a hard-handed SG player, but just changed string gauge from 11 to 8 - and I love it! Because it was like my brain stoped my hands from playing to hard. So now I'm curios on scalloped boards. So I'm wondering if they might make me play even softer... So how would you recommend me going forward? :)

I've always wanted to try a scalloped fretboard. I've never seen many lefties like that. A guy recently actually had a RW'S strat. For $300 with a scalloped fretboard. I thought about it for a minute. But didn't go for it. Instead , I got a ML1 PRO Modern. Which I'm happy that I did. So maybe one day , I'll get to play a scalloped fretboard. And see what I think.

I scalloped a cheat Strat copy I was given for free. It was a piece of crap and seemed like a good candidate for experimenting just because I was curious. End result looks like shit, but I love the feel. Definitely considering having a few of my main guitars done professionally. I never found I had to play any lighter, you can use the same pressure as a regular neck. Anyone who frets hard enough to put the string sharp is holding the neck like a baseball bat and are probably so tensed up they're holding themselves back from getting better.

My #1 since the mid-eighties has a scalloped neck. I am mostly a rhythm player. The scalloped neck taught me to play with a lighter touch. It also makes barring chords easier and fuller sounding. It does tend to sustain poor barring habits when you go to un-scalloped necks. If you come up on scalloped necks, you will likely be a fan of large frets. In a way scalloped necks are the ultimate in very large frets.

I do love the satin black of the body, how about a new iteration with that finish? Also, it's pronounced "ska· luhpt" for the fretboard and "sko·luhps" for the common name that is primarily applied to any one of numerous species of saltwater clams or marine bivalve mollusks in the taxonomic family Pectinidae, the scallops.

My original Strat (of course) and Satch Ibanez are scalloped full fretboard. My PRS is not. I love it because it makes pitch variation just effortless. But frankly jumbo frets do come pretty close to the feel. If you're curious do a basic medium quality guitar. A cheap one isn't adequate and you'll hate it.
