Actually, I can't disagree more. A #200 was an ill-conceived-and-executed story, but it was designed to remove Ms. M from continuity for a small amount of time, (A year? Two years? Whatever.) but there was little doubt of her returning sometime. Claremont didn't like that plot, found a flaw in the story (not a difficult task) and rewrote/retconned that aspect so that HE could screw Carol up -- not by having her lose her powers, but by having his new favorite character (Rogue) permanently steal Carol's memories. That decision fouled-up Carol, not for years, but for DECADES. He set the stage for the current Captain Marvel.

I went back and re-read some of his previous work and damn does it still look and sound solid. Especially when you look at how his work crossed over with other titles/writers at the time. Fall of the Mutants, Inferno, Mutant Massacre, X-Tinction Agenda, Days of Future Past, and his regular titles he wrote and/or all of the characters he created (or co-created) he's head and shoulders above these clowns. He took what appeared to be great pains to ensure stories meshed with one another. Dude obviously gives zero F's. I love it, but I can see how he'd rub some people the wrong way. Having said that, this guy is a legend. Even if you hate his rough edges, he deserves respect for his accomplishments. The clowns freaking out over this are nobodies and easily ignored.

The current X-men is garbage. I am currently reading Claremont’s X-men run from the beginning and just finished up mutant massacre. It is amazing how much more engaged i am in the stories even though I know the outcomes already. Writers today don’t have a clue how to tell a good story. The artists aren’t much better mostly either

I've always enjoyed Claremont's writing of the X-Men (much better than the current stuff), but my respect for him went sky-high for his hate for the Krakoa-era crap and what he had to say about Everything Everywhere at Once (I happen to really love that film and I think it win some "Best Picture" awards).

20 years ago, at a Wizard World Chicago, I was writing for CBR. I mentioned in my column a line that Jeph Loeb said at a panel that I thought was funny. Loeb had joked about how a typical comic should take as long to read as it takes the reader to do a #2. And, Loeb said, one of his comics can be read in the time the reader needs to take a piss. I thought it was a funny line. I quoted it. All pre-Twitter hell broke loose about how big a hack Loeb is, and how even Loeb knows it. Then I got crap from the other side saying I quoted him out of context and was being mean and disparaging to Loeb. Lesson learned: You need to be at a comic panel to understand what's truly going on. People will read into everything, out of context, to make it prove their own case. And this one Claremont Twitter thread is a great example of how one person doing a sarcastic Twitter stream clearly took an angle on the panel to promote their own agenda and everyone bought into it. The more things change, the more they say the same, indeed.

I’ve known Chris for a few ye now and have hosted multiple panels of his. Let me tell you if your hosting a Chris Claremont panel you have to be on your game, if you’re not then you get steamrolled, the guy has a great mind and your going to get a lot of stuff thrown your way if you don’t have a plan.

Chris Claremont hasn't written anything that people want to read in a few decades - incredibly good in his early days, but he created and perfected a style that people moved on from. I'm sure he still wants to write, and if his comics sold, he would still be writing regularly - but . . .
