---- Short History ----
- Iron was first mined here during the Roman times.
- Iron drove the first stage of the industrial revolution in South Wales.
- By 1830, South Wales produced 50% of British iron.
- By 1840, 40,000 people worked in the iron industry.
- But working conditions were appalling and their families lived in poverty. This led to many riots.
- Canals were used to transport the iron from the valleys to the docks.
- South Wales has two types of iron, ironstone nodules and haematite.
- Haematite is found in the Carboniferous limestone, but there’s not enough for the trade in South Wales to be significant.
- Ironstone nodules, however, can be found in considerable quantity.
- Much of the original mining in South Wales was for iron. Coal was a side product and primarily used to power the furnaces. It was only later that iron was imported and coal exported.
- The industries made Wales one of the first industrial countries in the world.
- The population of towns around iron works exploded.
- Built in the late 1800s to mine an iron ore type called haematite.
- This is one of the few shaft type iron mines in south Wales.
- The iron would be sent to the steel works in Port Talbot and Newport.
- The majority of South Wales' iron masters were businessmen from London and Bristol. They shaped modern Wales.
- Thousands of workers came here, but were paid low wages.
- During the mid-1900s, the iron was transported via train.
- It closed in the mid-70s.
- After being mostly demolished, the mine was capped. The yard was also used as tyre storage until a fire burnt it all down.
