Presenting a Model II Welte Philharmonic Organ from c. 1914 playing once again after over a 90 year silence. This organ was found in 1996 in a carriage house at the Col. Edward Green estate, Round Hill, in Dartmouth, MA. It had been put into storage perhaps as early as 1923, if the dates on the crates can be believed. Time was not kind to the organ. The roof leaked on it, vermin ate all the leather, wood worms and powder post beetles infested it, and it was generally vandalized. Parts had literally rotted away. A major restoration effort was required to bring this one back to life. The results are very rewarding.
This video and slide show demonstrate the sound which Welte was producing in their Philharmonic Organ series, the next generation after their Cottage and Concert Orchestrions. The Philharmonics are more sweet and mellow than their earlier counterparts. This Model II can play either a 100 key Philharmonic or Piano Orchestrion roll.

A labor of love for Durward Center, I am sure. Typical fine restoration, of the kind that he and only a few others are capable of.

I love how this has its own place of pride; an alcove obviously built for it (with columns!). And thanks for showing the “before” photos; it gives me hope for all my own unfinished (and much easier) projects I have in my 1932 home.

Hi Luke, There was once a 25 rank AEolian pipe organ behind the Welte, but it is no longer there.

That's a lovely organ! Are those metal pipes on each side of he cabinet functional or just for show?
@Welteboy

The case pipes are non functional. All speaking pipes are inside the case and under expression.

There are six feeder bellows for pressure. Beneath the left three are three vacuum feeders.

how many hours did the restoration need? wonderfully done. greetings from switzerland.

This project could be called a labor of love. Since I restore organs for collectors and museums, I only worked on this one in my spare time over twenty years. Only in the twentieth year did I devote full time to finish the organ. I did not keep records of how many hours were involved, but they were plentiful. For me, bringing this organ back to life was well worth the effort.

@@Welteboy I draw my hat for this outstanding restoration. i myself am a organbuilder and watchmaker an have the deepest respect for what you have done! did you also build the new case?
@Welteboy
@Welteboy 3 года назад
@@createinside4613 Thank you so much for your comments. I did not build the case. It was built for me by local cabinet maker, Thomas Brown. The carvings by Jim Brewster and the facade pipes by Gustav Bier in Germany. It was fortunate that I had in my shop an identical organ with it case. So it served as a pattern to be duplicated. I wrote an article about this restoration for Mechanical Music, Vol. 63, No. 3 May/June 2017. Perhaps you can find this online.

May I ask What is the difference between the Welte Philharmonic organ ( Which is technically an orchestrion) & the Welte Philharmonic player organ (which is a player pipe organ ) like those made by the Aeolian co? I assume size is the difference.An orchestrion is a single freestanding unit powered by mechanical bellows feeders like this is & a player pipe organ is a fixed installation with a full set of pipes for every rank & is powered by a turbine blower with small regulators as in a theatre pipe organ,as the Welte Philharmonic organ at Salmans in the UK is technically a player pipe organ & not an orchestrion as it is powered by a blower & is a fixed installation like a theatre organ organ which indeed Welte did build in their later years Also unlike orchestrions player organs have electric action.
@Welteboy
@Welteboy 6 лет назад
Technically, an orchestrion is a player organ. It is just a matter of semantics as to what it is called. Welte coined the name “Philharmonic” for their next generation of orchestrions which followed the Cottage and Concert series. The mechanisms were the same, but the pipe styles, voicing and cases were changed. Indeed, even their largest organs with keyboards were tubular pneumatic and used reciprocating pumps for both vacuum and pressure. Blowers and electric key action came along later. The Salomons organ is a good example. It originally had reciprocating pumps now replaced by a blower. The key action is vacuum pneumatic except for the echo which is electric action.

Is this organ that wasn’t installed on RMS Britannic and was saved?
@Welteboy
@Welteboy 7 лет назад
The Britannic Welte is installed in the Seewen Museum and can be seen at www.bundesmuseen.ch/musikautomaten/britannic_orgel/00052/index.html?lang=en It is a much larger instrument. I do not know the provenance of my organ before it came to the Green estate. Two other Welte Philharmonics like the one heard here hold the "Titanic Welte" title. The one in the Schloss Bruchsal Museum is the most likely to be correct.
