First - so sorry they didn't work out in the end! I've never tried anything so exotic as welwitschia, but we've all had "sudden failure" in what looked like healthy seedlings or cuttings. Much respect for posting a video documenting this. Knowing that we won't always succeed, at gardening or other endeavors, but can move on, is always a good message!

Thank so much for posting your experience! It seems with these the big debate is "do I risk repotting?" Similar with many cacti species.... I just had 5 of these welwitschia seeds germinate in a pretty shallow container (1.5 inches deep) with a sealed lid, so humidity is high but I didn't have to saturate the soil with as much of the fungicide solution. Will keep an eye and see how long we can keep them going.

Thanks for sharing! That's definitely a plant that captures my interest every time I stumble upon a mention and every time I don't pull through because it seems too unlikely to work - Though there is a nursery here in germany with a waiting list for plants the have already survived the soft stem phase of their development. Some day I'll try that!

That plant is really unique. It is beautiful and weird at the same time. I think it is cool! It is architectural in design. About three weeks ago, I took six cuttings from three of my wife's roses. I followed your propagation video and one of the cuttings has sprouted a leaf/branch. They are still in a 2 foot by 18 inch by 5 foot high portable greenhouse. Still on the patio.They get the sun for half the day. I'll bring them in before the next frost. It is still in the 50'sF at night, but winter is coming and we get sub-zero weather here in Northern New York State. Thanks for that video! Take care!

Aww I'm really sorry this didn't work out for you, you seemed really excited. But we always learn and hopefully you'll find some great seeds soon and you'll have this amazing plant! I've been checking this site for years now, but for some unspecified reason I felt it was a bit sketchy. After your video, I might buy a few seeds from them in the future. Have a wonderful day 😊
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 2 года назад
Win some, loose some 😂 By the way, if you do buy from this seed site, look for fresh seed. I have had some negative reports about the the seed there that isn't listed as fresh. The seeds cost a lot so I don't want you to throw your money away. Have a great day.

I've been lucky enough so far. The first and so far only seed germinated and is green :) I used mediterranian soil mix from the garden shop (contained clay and sand) and some pebbles too loosen it a bit for better water drainage. Have kept it wet and warm and been giving it copper based fungicide. Let's see where it gets.

Definately useful, thanks for posting. I am sitting on some seeds and I cannot find any resources on what to do. I'm going to have to try something at some point. My seeds are not wild collected, they are from captive breeding efforts...hope that means they do not have the fungus.

Thanks for the video! I've tried to grow these several times and have failed. They are incredibly difficult to grow from seed, I've never been able to keep them alive for long enough to get established leaves. In the US I have the luck of having several nurseries that sell year old specimens which have been incredibly easy to raise.

@@GardeningatDouentza Maybe it's best to keep them in mineral based substrate as any organic matter will attract fungi. I'll have a go at them myself eventually.

Hope you will try again. I've had similar experiences with rare plant seeds too. I've successfully grown some plants from the company you used. The other thing you may want to try is soaking seeds in a weak Hydrogen Peroxide solution for a few hours as this will not only kill fungi but also bacteria and viruses (at least on the surface).

The cost of phytosanitary certificate is not included in the price of the plant and will be added on as an additional fee. For most standard orders, phytosanitary certificates will cost $90 I copy and pasted that from the description of the seller of the Welwitschia mirabilis don’t worry there always is a way lol 💯 I got you

So sad your seeds were infected with aspergillus! ☹️A valuable video because it shows how you can do everything right, be an expert but still sometimes be unable to germinate difficult seeds. Me I like to start with a plant, because I have no expertise. But I do have to say those seeds were super cool looking with their wings, they reminded me a bit of pine seeds. Here's to finding a young plant or some uninfected seeds to start again.🌱🍀🌱

I loved the video and love experimenting so the end result is not the most important outcome for me, but what I learn on the journey is. I loved the story behind this plant that has had to evolve to survive. I hope you do try again with a new company. I have had some rarer seeds with ZERO germination from one company only to go on to 85% germination with a different company. The only drawback is of course price because these rarer seeds are expensive but I m sure you make exceptions for certain plants (I do). You made me laugh with microwaving your potting mix.....there isn't a plant free area in the house of any passionate gardener, not even the microwave 🤣
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 2 года назад
So sorry to hear about the zero germination. It's always the ones that you really really want that decide they just don't want to play ball. There is so much to learn from sowing seeds. That reminds me, I need to go check on my hardy annuals in the greenhouse now. Thanks, Una, and have a great day.

On the note of seed starting, i would like to let you know that after your advice, 4 out of the 5 clivia seeds that i sowed in april have germinated. They're soooooo slow!! Took them 30-35 days to just germinate. And now also they only have 1 leaf per plant. Ughh! Btw, more power to you ! I hope they work out the next time😔

The seeds in those papery pods remind me of lunaria, but then having a papery seedpod is an effective means of being carried by the wind in the wild. I am sorry to hear that it didnt work in the end and the seedlings wilted. I wonder why the fungicide didnt work very well in this case?
