He already got 10 assists and one day he got 8 blocks. This guy is gonna get that quadruple double.

Or a 5x5. Not quite as rare (4 quad doubles since blocks were recorded i think - Wilt and Russell prob both had at least 1 - about 20 or so 5x5's since the merger, but it's still a feat. Hakeem had 6 of them, Kirilenko had 3, Dr. J 2, etc. Wemby was 3 steals and 2 assists short the other night.

For the month of January Wemby's averaging 24, 9 and 3 on 50% from the field and a modest 32% from deep. Add in almost 3 and a half blocks per game with elite defense and rim protection and those stats become elite. Add in the fact he's doing all of this in just under 27 minutes a night and it becomes remarkable... Insane stats from a player with seemingly limitless potential.

One thing that’s kinda hit on in this vid is that there are a lot of times you can see Victor, the rookie, coaching up guys during time outs and leading the conversation. Vessel just got a new contract and there was a time Vic was clearly telling him how he wants something does and Devin just took it in stride. Another is the insane ability he has to get a lob shot going up even if he’s already going down. Like the passer probably just wants to get it to him and he’s making a shot literally only he can off of hang time. The height and length is the cover of the book but there’s so much Wemby does that just makes no sense even with that.

Finally someone talks about Wemby's off-ball game. Seriously, his off-ball game is eerily like MJ's. The jukes, the fade-outs, the v-cuts, the spin-outs, the backdoors, positioning in transition, with scoring opportunities covering every area under the 3-Pt line , and the overactivity of when he does these off-ball techniques are MJ-like. This also means he does a great job of helping his teammates to find him better (though it doesn't seem his teammates are taking advantage of it, he's literally doing the hard work for them to actually find him, and they still don't take the chance to pass him the ball); He can distribute his gravity to prevent their offense from stagnating and create more out-of-play scoring opportunities; He can also get more offensive rebounds and therefore more opportunities for second chance points; He doesn't need to control the offense through playmaking to help create scoring opportunities for others (I seriously hope he can get a good playmaker to compliment him); He doesn't need to go into isolation plays to score. Even when he does get the ball in isolation, he doesn't overextend his possession, he doesn't overdribble whenever he gets the ball, he doesn't wait for his defender to establish position against him, he just does something almost immediate whenever he gets the ball; Also a lot of catch-and-shoot opportunities for him; It still blows my mind how a 7'4" guy can even do those off-ball moves at all. I don't think anyone his size is supposed to move like him. Although being 7'4" I'm pretty sure he's going to f'ck up his knees earlier than MJ did as skillful and as active playing off-ball like this. But at least we now know even if his team is losing, he actually sacrifices his knees to get a bucket AND help prevent the team's offense from pausing. His off-ball skillset will be critical if he ever gets the chance to play for a championship. I just hope he gets that chance earlier because he's actually putting a lot of stress on his body playing the off-ball like he does.

I recently saw a great video by Michael MacKelvie about how European teams are making it increasingly difficult for the American national team because they focus much more on passing and off-ball movement. I think it is that approach that Wemby is now really benefiting from as well
@MarsXpdtion
@MarsXpdtion 3 месяца назад
I think these europeans traits have always been there because of a smaller floor, the no basket interference and the no defensive 3, the zone culture and a lesser athletic profile in most of the players which clogg the paint and mandates teams to try to optimise the passing game. This difference is : over the past 15 years european bbball vastly improved on athletic development, preparation, talent scouting, notably thanks to the attraction pull the NBA has. When you saw players like Dirk TP Pau make it big in the league, then as a prospect/as a team you reckon that you can put projects into place to maximise these players potentials and treat them as future NBA greats from when they are 15 years old.

To say passing and off-ball movement is only a European phenomenon sounds misleading.

@rfmmike6096 3 месяца назад
I also see this perspective even as I'm typing this I'm watching a Montverde game and there's no iso ball, it's all passing and driving to get a good look. Impossible to tell because Chet is grounded within a specific role at OKC. He has nowhere near the freedom Wembaynama does, bringing the ball up court and pulling up for threes or doing some improvised facilitating... luxuries of being on a bad team. It makes his box score stats worse, but in turn, it probably helps his efficiency more, playing within an offense where he's used more as a finisher... I don't think it's clear one is particularly better than the other thus far, i will say Wembaynama stands out to me more in terms of being creative offensively with his own shot, his ability to pass etc, but again, he has the freedom to do that and not get scolded if anything goes wrong... I think whoever wins the ROY at the end between the two would be a deserving winner... If you want to reward winning, it should be Chet, but i don't put as much emphasis winning when it comes to ROY than i do with other awards... We're talking about 1st year players anyway, so the winning will be highly dependent on team context, even more so...

@@yupadej4361 not sure I'd say his way of playing resembles Giannis' really, and I think it'd be a suboptimal style for him because at his height he'll never quite have the speed and explosiveness that Giannis does. The reason Giannis' game works so well is that he plays like a slashing guard in the mold of Ant or Westbrook but at 6'11", at Wemby's height his more finesse-heavy approach is better suited - he doesn't need to be a cannonball because a) he shoots well, extremely well for a 20 year old 7 footer and b) even moreso than KD, nobody can stop him from shooting because of his combination of height and movement, whether from midrange or around the rim. He doesn't need to build up steam like Giannis, he'd probably just get injured. The Greek just found a perfect niche in the game to compensate for his relative lack of shooting skill

I kept NBA League Pass because of Wemby. He is fascinating to watch. This is what happens when you get a Russell/Wilt/Kareem level big man who comes up in the modern era. Some of his defensive highlights really do remind me of a young Wilt - that preposterous length and perfect timing just erasing opponents' shots. His motor is great as well. He plays HARD. He moves without the ball, loves setting screens, and runs the floor like a wing. I wish his teammates would reward him more often for running the floor like that; most big men don't. Offensively, I've noticed that he has picked up a quasi-hook, quasi-push shot with either hand from the low to mid block...at his height, modern Kareem definitely comes to mind. His ceiling is Rushmore. Plain and simple. No idea whether he'll make it, but he seems to have a head on his shoulders and the tools are more than there. I would say that injury is the big issue to look out for. It will definitely be fun to watch him develop. I've been enjoying the Spurs games even though they are absolutely terrible because Victor does something amazing every single time he plays.
