This is a 3 day backpacking trip I took into the Weminuche Wilderness of Colorado’s San Juan Mountains in September 2023. The original goal
was to be a 7 day trip from the Animas River up and over Columbine and Hunchback Passes ending at Molas Pass on the Colorado Trail. It was a gear shakedown in preparation for next years thru hike of the Colorado Trail. After reaching my planned camp for the night at the junction of Vallecito and Johnson Creeks on day 2, satellite weather indicated a strong thunderstorm front was forecasted to move into the San Juan Mountains on the night of day 3 and stall out for several days.
After some thought, I decided to switch to plan B and I would hike out of the wilderness effectively ending my adventure on the afternoon of day 3.
It did prove to be the correct decision.
This trip did give me confidence that the gear I chose for the Colorado Trail is the correct gear.

Thoroughly enjoyed all the great DSNGRR scenery and especially the gorgeous views from the trail. The Weminuche is one of the most impressive wilderness areas in Colorado, IMHO. Thanks for the scenery and some good memories of the Weminuche. Prudent to bail ahead of that severe weather, we've all done it at one time or the other. I've enjoyed many summers since 2006 volunteering with the CTF and enjoyed every moment on the trail, even working on those segments that kicked my rear end. Good luck on your CT through hike this summer!

Really enjoy this hike with you. Hope the knee injury wasn't too painful for the rest of the hike. Funny thing I must share just finished watching Eli return hike of the LSHT in 100 degree heat and there you are in the San Juan Forest wearing a puffy jacket. What an adventure for you both. Thanks again Jerry your neighbor in Texas

Thanks! The knee injury looked worse than it actually was. It gave me no problems. The respite from the heat has been great. It’s 43° here this morning. Eli did great in polishing off the LSHT in the heat and drought conditions. Thanks for your support!

Hey Jerry, I missed you, sir, and I'm glad to see you back. That was absolutely beautiful!!!! The train ride in is what makes it super cool. I'm really glad you were able to keep moving after that fall. I'm really glad you made it out before the gusher came in. Ride That Tasty Wave

Thanks, Weldon! Besides getting to experience the beauty and solitude of the San Juans, I did discover I can still operate pretty good at high altitude. In the end, I was okay with getting off trail early. They weather got pretty messy for several days after including snow. Thanks for watching and keep on moving!✌️

Jerry, the Weminuche looked beautiful. I loved listening to the sounds of the train as it took off after dropping you at the trail. And the music you picked around minut 14 was perfect for the trail scenery. I liked the silent video and being able to hear the sounds of nature. But I missed the narration because I don't know much about the area. That looked like a nasty spill you took. Good thing it wasnt too bad. Looks like your first aid kit was well stocked! Beautiful campsites and a great looking trip. Sorry you had to cut it a bit short. Look forward to hearing more about it in November.

It’s a beautiful place. I was so overwhelmed by the scenery I couldn’t think of anything to say. lol. The knee wasn’t as bad as it looked. My big toe is another issue. It’s still a bit messed up after stumping it pretty good on the third day. Yeah, I’m looking forward to the meetup in November to catch up on everyone’s adventures over the last year.

That was a great hike. I really enjoyed that. The train ride to the trailhead can't be beat. What a unique experience. Subscribed, I would like to follow along on your CT hike. I've looked at doing sections along that or the CDT or where they both merge. Take care!

Thanks for watching and subscribing! I really wanted to get higher up towards the CDT and the Elk Creek drainage, but the weather wasn't going to cooperate. Thanks okay, I'll see that on the Ct this summer. I'm not sure if I'll be posting my CT thru hike vlogs while on trail or afterwards but I'll defiantly be videoing.

I didn’t video the bridge out crossing. There were several backpackers on the other bank filtering water when I arrived and wasn’t sure they wanted to be filmed. The creek was over the top of my knees. The concern I had for rising water was part of the reason I decided to cut my trip short since the approaching storm front was forecasted to stall out over the entire area. And it did for days. It was originally planned for my wife to pick me up at Molas Pass. In case of trouble, my Plan B was to hike out south on the Vallecito Trail and have her meet me at that trailhead. We stay in touch on the Garmin.

Great video, Jerry! I'm often asked, "Aren't you afraid of bears and mountain lions?" And I always respond that I'm more afraid of storms than wildlife. One of the thru-hikers I met while out there this season made a joke (after we'd just endured a pretty scary storm the night before) that backpackers are among the few people who will ask how the weather is and really mean it. lol. Glad you're safe and still had a few good days in the mountains to test gear. When I got off trail, the locals in Durango were saying monsoon season came much later this year. They got a bad enough storm one night while I was still on trail that my shuttler (who lives in Durango) messaged me and asked if I was alright. Weather out there is no joke, for sure. Those smiles every time you look at the camera sum it up. #whywego

Thank you! It’s definitely a late monsoon season. Today is our last day in Durango and it’s been round after round of thunderstorms since I’ve been off trail. Tomorrow we leave for Chama to see if the CDT sobo bubble has reached the pass yet. We’ll stage at the pass and help shuttle to town as we did last year. My gear functioned wonderfully and it’s about time to compile my list of shuttlers and hostels. Now I must get caught up on watching videos, including yours. Thanks for watching and like I always say… keep on moving.

@@tangenttrails That sounds awesome. Be safe driving back home. As you plan for next season, let me know if there are any areas you're struggling to find support for. Since I know at least two people who are thru-hiking the CT next season, I have a very tentative plan to live out of my car with the dogs for a few weeks and move along the trail offering support and trail magic where needed and backpacking when I'm not needed. So please keep me posted. I'd love to help out however I can.

Awesome trip to some beautiful country. That was an epic start going on the Silverton. That train is on our list to ride someday. Beautiful trail and scenery throughout. Glad you were able to get word of the storm. Dang, you fell! I guess I gave you some bad luck from my fall earlier this season. LOL. Glad you were able to make it out safely and not get too much bad weather. Well done sharing the adventure. Have a great day.

Thank you! Y’all should definitely ride. The Silverton has been a train I’ve ridden often through my life and I’ve told myself for years that one day I’d ride it to the wilderness. This was the day and it made for a good shakedown for the Colorado Trail next summer. The weather turned worse as the week went on including snow at the high elevations. The knee did good and it’s pretty much healed. Thanks for watching and keep on moving!✌️

The CT was the best and hardest vacation we ever took! It's tough country, hiking in the CO wilderness. The climbs are brutal at elevation, but the rewards are endless. The weather, you got a small taste of that, you just never know. Good you got a trip in and we're able to test your gear and can see what a month long journey can be like on the CT. Can't wait for you to get back out here 😎🐾
