Greetings! I'm Jerry, trail name “Hashtag”. Welcome to my channel. Based in Texas, I'm an avid hiker, backpacker and supporter of our public lands and the great outdoors. You can join me here as I share various backpacking, day hiking and other adventures in Texas and across the country. Thank you for subscribing and following along on my adventures. Remember, #recreateresponsibly when enjoying the outdoors.
It's a great area to get stretch your legs. Especially during the fall, winter and early spring when it's not so dang hot. It's close to my home so it's a good place to try out new gear and just get away from the city. Thank you for watching!
Great Video, Jerry. 😊 My husband found your channel and we’ve both really enjoyed watching your adventures. We plan on going to the Lone Star Trail as soon as this Texas weather becomes tolerable again. :)
Thank you for watching! Hopefully the forest service and LSHT volunteers can’t get the trail open by fall. Unfortunately the spring storms have caused havoc with the trail and national forest with much of both under a closed order.
I've done the DSNGRR twice but not this one; gotta do it one day. I think you have the right idea for when to visit that area. I gotta push my trips back to September, maybe early October. Thanks for all the impressive Fall scenery, cloudy, rainy weather and all. And thanks for a fun virtual train ride!!
Thoroughly enjoyed all the great DSNGRR scenery and especially the gorgeous views from the trail. The Weminuche is one of the most impressive wilderness areas in Colorado, IMHO. Thanks for the scenery and some good memories of the Weminuche. Prudent to bail ahead of that severe weather, we've all done it at one time or the other. I've enjoyed many summers since 2006 volunteering with the CTF and enjoyed every moment on the trail, even working on those segments that kicked my rear end. Good luck on your CT through hike this summer!
Thank you! Both the San Juans and the Weminuche are like a second home to me. Many memories. I’ll be back to finish the entire planned trip at some point after the CT. Thanks for watching and for our volunteer work and love for Colorado trails!✌️
We are not fans of hot weather hiking. Usually try to go north or high elevations during the hot months of the year. That breeze sounds really nice and IM sure refreshing for you guys. I keep a mosquito net with me when I hike, sometimes they just get too annoying! We also use some of the horse trails in our area , usually cleared out pretty good . Thanks for sharing North Texas!
Nice trip and meetup. Hot day it seemed. Cool footage of the bee. I liked your camp spot for the night. I'd filter out of that water before I did a stock tank. Good call on hiking in the dark to beat the heat. Heat is our Kryptonite! Nice to see all the flowers. I'm still waiting for the snow storms to stop and the snow to melt in the high country. Nice job on surviving the heat and completing the trip. Have a great day.
Thank you! It's been a great season for the wildflowers with the tremendous amount of rain that north Texas has received. The heat. I'm afraid it's gonna be another rough summer here. I'm ready to head to the Rockies. lol. I sure have enjoyed your spring break trip videos. Best wishes to y'all! ✌
That was a great three day hike. I can't imagine hiking in 90f+ heat. If it gets over 70f on this side of the pond, I melt. It is certainly great to spend time with a friend. I love the hike in the lower temps and chill out in the afternoon. Great tactics. I've really enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! The 90° heat is rough and it’ll be getting into the 100° range in a month. I’ll be ready to head to the Rockies and the cooler temperatures in the high country. Thank you for watching!
Looks like a nice little hike, despite the heat! Actually thought of your channel this week driving through Alvord and Decatur and seeing the signs for the Grasslands! Keep the videos coming!
Man, that pizza!! Looked amazing! Definitely need to check that one out! Definitely a warm one! But man, those grasslands are really beautiful! Thanks for bringing us along!
It smells and tastes just like a pizza! It’s one of my 3 favorite Packit Gourmet meals with the other two being the All American Burger and the Big ‘un Burrito. The Grassland is truly a gem! Thanks for stopping by Mark!✌️
Oof that's hot. I dig your Xero Z Trail sandals. I wear the Xero Colorado almost everyday for work on hard concrete/pavement. I have a pair of Aqua Clouds as well but I don't particularly like the toe-thong style of sandals. Your tent looks awesome.
Thanks, I'm really digging the Off Set Solo tent. I can take the dry heat. When the humidity starts reaching 90%, that's what I'm not used to. lol. I've tried a lot of camp shoes, but the Zero Z's I've had the longest. Thanks for watching!✌
Great trip with lots of mixed weather. Thanks for the warning at the start of the video. I gabbed some lunch and desert before the show! LOL. Those first couple water sources would make me cringe! Glad you found a couple good camp spots. Especially to ride out those storms. That was coming down good. Beautiful sunsets though. I had to laugh at the comment about droughts. "If it is anything like the last ones, it is going to be dry!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 That was one aggressive beaver wherever it was. Nice reflections on the lake to end your trip. Well done. Have a great day.
I am very interested in backpacking here.. My problem is I can't figure out where I am allowed to camp along the way. Do you have any tips? I don't know why I'm finding it so hard.
There is only two fee camping areas located in the LBJGL. TADRA and Valley View where you’ll pay to camp. Everything else is dispersed camping. You can camp anywhere unless there’s a no camping sign. Just be sure to practice Leave No Trace Principles.
You can find maps online. Google LBJ Grassland maps. I use the maps to plan my routes. Camping is dispersed and free unless you camp at TADRA point of the Valley View established campgrounds. Just be sure to practice Leave No Trace Principles.
@@tangenttrails thank you! I have been watching your videos about this trail and am thinking maybe I can do it. Beginning backpacker, and likely solo as well, so nervous about trip planning. Grateful for all the info you have in your videos.
Jerry, awesome video. I love the long form. I'm not retired, but I watched it anyway. That storm was nuts. Glad I missed out on that in a tent. That's got to give you good confidence in your new tent. Looks like you've got the hang of pitching it. The spot you were talking about as a potential dispersed camp, almost looks exactly like where me and my boys took a lunch break when we backpacked out there. Hard to tell. Looked like a good trip. With good food to end it with!
Thanks, Cameron! That's probably the same spot y'all to a lunch break at. It's located a couple of miles from the pine woods where the photographer goes. Might make a nice camp in the fall if the mosquitos aren't too bad and can keep it LNT friendly. I really like my new Offset Solo. Has plenty of room for a one-person tent. Thanks for watching!
Man that's some hot weather! And then rain and hail?! Tent is lookin good 👌 Keep hearing great things about the Packit Gourmet meals, def need to try them out. Nice one Jerry!
Wow, that was a pretty intense thunder storm ! Good to see different parts of Texas, I don't think we have visited this area before. Thanks for sharing!
It was a soaker of a storm. Had to eventually place rocks over all of my tent stakes to keep them on the ground. The LBJ Grassland is about an hour northwest of Fort Worth. Thanks for watching!
Thank you! I was vlogging this trip to test my battery bank to see how many days of usage I could actually get without recharging for the Colorado Trail. I hadn't planned on actually making a video. But hey, here it is. lol. Thanks for watching.
Great hike! Thanks to your video, I've added this hike to my list, hoping for the end of the year. Beautiful land up there...makes me miss home, which is really not too far from there at PK Lake! :)
That was funny Good to be retired and have the time for long videos hahah. Crazy storms there - here in corpus get absolutely nothing and we still in drought. I’m looking forward to going ‘north’ I really like the 70 mile options you have there good for you. What month is CO ?
Great video, it's been a while since I camped at lbj . We are getting plenty of rain here in north Texas. My local lake is 15ft high. I'm going to try to get out to the grasslands soon. I gave a friend all my maps of the grasslands but hopefully I can still remember the areas. I've camped by little cottonwood lake a couple times. Maybe I'll see you out there.
Thank you! You can find some good trail maps online to download and print. Gaia GPS and Avenza Maps are two phone apps that have LBJ maps also. Hope to see you out there!
You tent collapsed??! That’s one of my biggest fears in a storm like that! What an adventure! And a 4am start on the last day?! Actually pretty smart move to beat the storms. Looked like a great post hike meal too! Thank you for sharing!
Yeah. I didn’t video it but wish I had. lol. Water started coming in over the bathtub after I set it back up and didn’t notice for about five minutes. I had put my camera phone in a ziplock. Type 2 fun for sure. The 4 am start was honestly more for getting to Mexican Inn for lunch than the storms.lol. Thanks for watching, Mark!
Excellent hike, Jerry! You definitely received some of the good ol' Texas weather on this beautiful hike. It has really grown up fast with all of this rain we've had. Is it still $5 to park overnight?
I've done my chores and I'm retired so I could really enjoy this. I love that you say it had cooled down to the low 70s. That's a hot summer day for us 😂. I've never seen hail that size. Wow. As for the Beaver, it's strange that they had been working there but no dam. Some beautiful flowers, too. 95 with a heat index of 105f is just too hot for me. I'd melt. Did your good lady wife drop you off and pick you up, or was this a circular route? I really enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching! I was extremely happy that the hail didn't reach baseball size as stated in the weather warning. I've counted around 10 individual ponds and lakes at LBJJ with beaver sign but have yet to witness a single beaver. lol. I parked at the trailhead. You can drive a park at the TADRA campsite/trailhead for a $10 fee per day. $6 if you have a National Parks Pass. Each trail is a loop and overlap one another so you can piece together for a larger outer loop, as I often do, or shorter day hike on a single trail. There are over 72 miles of trails you can utilize.
