WEN 6369 Variable Speed 5 Amp Drywall Sander: amzn.to/3ZXXf57
Sanding Pads: amzn.to/3TBizen
After rehabbing a house and fighting popcorn in every bedroom and even the game room I can tell you if I have buyers remorse for this, or if it was awesome . Here's what I liked and what I hated about the sander
What Wen says about the sander:
Remember when you could sand those hard to reach places? the WEN variable speed drywall Sander goes where no Sander has gone before. With a pivoting 8.5-Inch head that swivels in all directions, the WEN drywall Sander automatically adjusts to be flush against every surface that crosses its path.
Adjust the speed anywhere from 600 to 1500 RPM to meet the needs of the project at hand. The hook and loop base Pad makes Sandpaper changes a breeze while the Foldable design allows for simple storage and transportation.
The lightweight 9-pound body telescopes to reach lengths up to five feet away. This package also includes six pieces of hook and loop Sandpaper Disks (60, 80, 120, 150, 180 and 240 Grit) along with a flexible dust vacuum hose that stretches up to 15 feet for reliable dust removal.
And because it's a WEN product, your variable speed drywall Sander comes backed by a two-year warranty, a nationwide network of skilled service technicians and a friendly customer helpline. Remember when you could reach the unreachable? remember WEN.

It is wayyyyy easier to lightly spray with water and scrape the popcorn off with a wide drywall knife! Then you just need to sand the remnants. Sanding the whole thing dry just sounds awful. (Popcorn is awful to remove regardless of how you do it!)

Yes that is what I was thinking and if it is still really tough to get off just throw up some new drywall and be done with it in two days.

I have removed a lot of popcorn in my time. It can be a mess but certinaly the folks commenting on this below are right. It's much easier wetting it down and scraping it with a wide drywall knife. With possible asbestos I have double covered the floor so that once you remove the first layer of plastic, what you missed is captured on the second. But usually that and masking off the walls is an overkill. I have found the more water the better. I use my Graco paint sprayer with a big tip to put on the water. A big pump sprayer would take a while but also work. I duct tape a large drywall knife to an extension pole and scrape from the ground. It just peals right off. True you walk in and over the newly formed mud. Once wet you can scrape a whole living room in under a half hour. Usually it is unpainted and not even primed underneath so you end up scraping a little of the original drywall mud off the seams but touch up mud and a light texture can easily fix this. Keep in mind, the original drywall contractor knew it was going to be popcorn, so it is seldom finished for smooth ceilings before the popcorn spraying went on. Some mud work will always be necessary.

You should have bought a 2x4 and attached it to the unit at the comfort point you using the sanding tool. You could also add a caster wheel to the bottom of the 2x4 so you can move it freely around the room.

Spray with water let it absorb, then scrape.

This is a Drywall sander Not a Popcorn Sander. After Removing popcorn by wetting it and scraping it off with a blade attached to a shop vac, will make smoothing the drywall in prep for mud. And sanding mud in between coats. Just saying.

Have you tried mudding over popcorn instead of sanding? I’ve tried it and it seems easier. Except it’s best to use the slower drying mud because you have the time make it look nicer.
@grazeland
@grazeland Год назад
yes, that's a good point and a good option. If you don't like the orange peel texture or want it baby smooth mudding over is probably easiest. i would vote premixed for reasons you mentioned. A long work time before it dries.

Way too much work mudding over it. I have done this work many many times.

You should have tore it down and replaced with new drywall because once you go beyond the drywall paper you’re screwed. You have to plaster over any drywall paper exposed otherwise paint will not look right.
@grazeland
@grazeland Год назад
thats a good point. thanks for sharing. I've had it before where the paper was missing and the paint would just absorb into it, not good. Thankfully the way I scraped with vinegar and water added to it, it didn't knock it down that far and just took out the high parts to get a orange peel look.

My question is would you buy another house with popcorn ceilings?

I absolutely would! I just posted a video showing how I prefer to knock down popcorn ceiling. The method I use makes it as easy as eating popcorn.

UM, THIS IS NOT DESIGNED TO SAND POPCORN CEILINGS. DUH.

Complains and says he might not buy again. States he might hand sand instead of using power sander. Funny…let him hand sand one room and listen to how much he whines!!!

Oh boy. That tool is not designed to remove popcorn ceiling, which most likely has asbestos and should not be attempted to be removed without proper safety equipment such as respirators and ventilation fans. This video should be removed from youtube.

Spray water then scrape. Or mud over THEN sand. You used the tool wrong - sanding popcorn isn't the correct method. On the next attempt, drag a garden hose inside, spray, then scrape, it'll take you a day. Sanding popcorn should never be your answer. Your other vid with the sprayer kind of got it right. Take a garden hose drench the ceiling then scrape. It'll all come off. Forget your vinegar / multiple sprays. Your after footage is still bad. Garden hose for 2 min then scrape off like the rest of us. You'll scrape to the ceiling sheet. We removed a 1650 sq/ft house popcorn in 2 hours a few days ago - it's really not that difficult.

I just use a pump garden sprayer. Way less water and mess on the floor to deal with.

Yes it does! you are just fighting in your head the whole time hold it for 10 more seconds! 10 more seconds! If I used it for a living though I wouldn't need a gym.

That ceiling looks painted. No sander will take that off. Not even the festool. Scrap and skim is your option
@grazeland
@grazeland Год назад
Yeah, I've learned that if it's painted it's hell, if its not painted it's easy to remove. Thanks for the comment

DO SAND ASBESTOS. Call an abatement specialist. Face masks as we have seen don’t do shit.
@davebrittain9216
@davebrittain9216 Год назад
I think you mean "DO NOT". Ya you never use a power tool on asbestos. As soon as you use a power tool on asbestos you are into a type 3 abatement situation. I have done and overseen plenty of this kind of work.
