Well nascar has racist origins Very racist origins. And it originated in the south And you know what its like in the south especially in the 1950s Also in the 1950s it would be looked down upon if a black man kissed a white woman in 1950s because thats what happens when you won back then well that was one of the reasons but it was mostly because he was black. And i personally believe they downpayed him alot. He got 147 top tens and only got 20k altogether. I think its a shame it took till 2015 for them to put him in the nascar hall of fame, also this rlly pisses me off but nobody would sponsor him so his kids, and himself would have to be his pit crew. I think if he had got a sponsor. Good pit chief. He would of won alot more races and when i mean alot i mean he could of rivaled richard petty and david pearson in wins. Maybe like 130 wins. Such a shame. Nascar pisses me off i think there should be alot more black drivers. Noe that bubba is gone there is 0 in nascar.... im pissed Didnt EVEN GIVE HIM THE TROPHY WHEN HE WAS ALIVE. *THEY WAITED 57 GOD DAMN YEARS TO GIVE HIM THE GOD DAMN TROPHY????????!??? WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK???? AND DONT SAY "oh they didnt know about him" FUCK OFF YES THEY DID BECAUSE THEY PUT HIM IN THE HALL OF FAME!!!! THEY HAVE ALWAYS KNOWN ABOUT WENDELL SCOTT BUT NEVER GAVE HIM THE FUCKING TROPHY. IT AINT THAT HARD TO GIVE OUT A FUCKING TROPHY AND WHEN YOU DID NASCAR YOU GAVE IT TO HIM LONG AFTER HE HAS PASSED*

Man, watching this video had me tears. I like to think of me being tough, but I had tears rolling down from start to end. It also makes me angry as hell knowing how people treated this man and for him not t receive his trophy initial years after his death. I don’t care if people say “We’ve come along way since then”, it doesn’t matter. NASCAR people are supposed to be so-called “Patriots”, shouting “AMERICA!!!”, here you have a military veteran from WWII being treated like that. Racism isn’t a mistake, it’s just an excuse.

I was privileged to watch him race at Bristol in the 60s. At that time I was a teenager and didn’t know a lot about Wendell but I wanted him to win so bad. I was seated where I could see the pits and while all the other pit crews were using air wrenches Wendell’s crew were using your typical lug wrenches. I will say this...Stock car driving has came a long way but it has went in the wrong direction. It's not Stock car anymore...the only thing that changed the game over the years was money. The only thing that ties NASCAR to the modern sport is the name. NASCAR always has been a sport that one must be raised and conditioned in by money which is why there weren't that many minorities in this sport before. The older drivers were all given their opportunities by their financial backing. If anything Scott should've been taking donations from the people in his community. Back then would've been a good time to do such a thing being that this was during the time of the Civil Rights Struggle.

@ 31:07, if Bud Baker was a man of class as soon as he realized the error he woulda took the trophy and walked-over and given it to Wendell ~ and made a big-stink about what a lousy deal was going down, and WHY. Instead, Baker KEPT the trophy???? A man captive to the prejudices of the south, and the messed-up times. Jeez, underdog guys like Scott sure have my respect and regard for their dogged determination and style. To change the topic, What if some of the indie cats back then were onto nitrous-boost and stagger to give them an edge they coulda cleverly, subtly used to keep them in the top 10 finishes? Not overdone so their 'secret' would have leaked, at least not for some time. Or other 'tricks' anticipating out-of-the-box rule-finesse thinking, like clutch-pack/bell-housing over-pressure to vent-feed the carbs? Innovation was the life-blood of small-track and stock-car racing back then that made racing so exciting, keeping it competitive, novel, human-interest and technically relevant. ~ ; )

I'm a white middle class 49 yr old conservative that saw Greased Lightening at the movies, 1977? I also believe that most of this PC crap is just completely stupid. That said, I am 100% behind any one of any color that wants to make a name for his or herself, and to see stuff from the US's "not so distant past", like Wendell not getting the checkered flag or initial win in 1963 because they did not want to showcase a black man winning a race just makes me want to puke. Like the famous driver Darrell Waltrip say's in this documentary, that would just crush even the toughest of individuals. Hat's off to you Wendell, you are an inspiration to us all! I went through a lot of adversity in my life and am proud of how I handled most of it, and I consider myself a pretty tough character, but I don't have anywhere near enough to go through what Wendell did. This is not baseball or football, this is southern white bread stock car racing of the 50s and 60s. Now that's balls!

He didn't have the support of Jackie Robinson, and that's not to put Mr. Robinson at all. Robinson, Hank Aaron, even Tiger Woods at the beginning were put through hell just for the pigment of their skin. There's a great film called "Greased Lightning" which is basically a Bio Of Wendell Scott starring Richard Pryor in what I think one of Pryor's greatest Acting performances. There have been other Black drivers like Willy T. Ribbs who faced some of the same hate in the mid 80's. Bubba Wallace who nearly won a race at Daytona. Yet Wendell is the only one and sadly was not truly acknowledged until after his death. I know there's Black drivers in the lower Nascar series but what owner with a decent car will give them a chance? Thank God for Petty Enterprises giving Bubba a chance but let's face it P.E. hasn't been a top 10 championship team since 1979. 40 years ago. maybe Richard Childress can stop putting his spoiled brat golden spoon fed Brat grandkids rides for nothing. If that 3 cars not going to be retired and an Earnhardt isn't going to drive it then why not have a Black Man drive the Man in Blacks car to a championship? I think that would get one of his great shit eating grins & a cheer up in heaven from the real #3

I first learned abut Mr. Scott from the movie, "Greased Lightning:. What a story! As for all the controversy abut Nascar, . Well ,that's the south fer ya - . Never do the right thing unless it makes the corporation look good, or makes $ .He who wins, writes the history.

07:06, that's an American pickup, yet that wiper arm doesn't give full swing to the driver's side. I can understand my type 1, 1971 and 1968 Beetles doing that (which I found a pain during winter time), but not a vehicle designed and built for the US market.

My thought as well. He often (maybe always?) bought his cars used from other drivers so he would have been a model year behind. My best guess from historic photos is that he would have been running a '62 Bel Air bubbletop around that time.

What a true hero , father, and leader the kind of person we all wish we could be or know. Thanks to all those that work so hard to help bring this story of his life for all to see thank you for taking the time to showcase his life Thanks to the Scott family for letting us into their life and getting to know what a great father and racer he was, This is the kind of story that should be shown in schools as it brings so much in life for all to see and learn from. thanks for posting and please keep it up

Terrie Cotham This video should not be shown in schools. The reason being is #1 it provokes racial stereotyping, #2 makes white students feel sorry for what their ignorant ancestors have done, #3 & lastly, I believe it would anger any student of colored origin to untrust any student of white European ethnic..jmo✌

Believe Wendell needs to be in the Hall of Fame. Everything he went through, his determination to race against the racism that was the south in that time period. To win a race fair and square and have a racist NASCAR not give him the win. Wendell is and always will be a hero. GOD BLESS Wendell Scott #34.

Wow, that is so sad that he never got his trophy. Glad to see it was finally given to his family though. One of the greatest moments of my life was getting to meet one of the Tuskegee Airmen the day after the Indy 500. The gentleman was either 90 or 91 and had always wanted to attend the race, and that was the first year he was able to do so. I've been very fortunate to do more than my fair share of cool things, but that is one morning that I hope I never forget.

I wonder if the racist asshole who really did not win gave back the trophy.Or they just made a new one for the Great Wendall Scott.Richard Petty had enough bread to make Wendall one of his team drivers. But,even the king knew he would be outshined! My short list of heroes with Jackie Robinson and Charles Drew.A true inspiration and trendsetter in sports and life.
