We enjoy a wonderful visit to Wentworth Woodhouse the magnificent South Yorkshire palladian mansion at Rotherham former home of the 1st Marquis of Rockingham circa 1725 and then passing in to the Fitzwilliam family who lived there until 1990 up until the last family member Lady Juliet Tadgell... The title passed to a cousin now the 10th Earl Fitzwilliam... The estate at its height had over 100,000 acres as well as coal mines generating a vast fortune for the family. Two sets of death duties in the 1940s and the nationalisation of the coal mines devastated the family fortunes resulting in the fabulous contents of the house being sold off in three house sales in 1948, 1986 and 1998 prior to the house passing to the Wentworth Woodhouse preservation Trust.

Thanks for showing this. I used to visit the grounds all the time when I was a child. At one time the building was a teacher training college. Glad to see it's being rescued.

I think the last ''estimate' was about £40 million needs spending. A lot of money has already gone into underpinning parts of the building due to mining subsidence and of course the roof!! It is considered the longest frontage of a 'private' house in England if not Europe. Please check if I'm about right. It's a while since I gathered that info. Just love the house!

@user-iu9ob7wv3z Hi! Thanks for watching... you are 100% correct it has been confirmed as the longest frontage in England. It really is a vast building with such a back story it's a lucky survivor really! We hope they're able to refurnish it as these old houses come to life when they're furnished... the coal board mined open cast right up to within a few metres of the Baroque rear front... it certainly wouldn't be allowed today. Wasn't Fitzwilliam one of the family names given to the illegitimate sons of English kings?

Fitz preceding a name does mean son of... so I guess son of William in this case... not sure about illegitimate sons of Kings I'll have to look that one up... Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment, best wishes 😊

Fitzroy is given to illegitimate sons of kings in England all though it’s possible it could be the name given to the illegitimate sons of nobles

Visited here about 14 yrs ago, an American owned it then. While he had done alot of improvements , money was an issue. When i last visited it, the trust had taken over and scaffolding was all around it. They were trying to make a claim to the coal board then for all the subsidence on the south side of the house they had caused with all their mining for coal. Its a lovely house with a great story behind it. Read the book Black Diamonds if you are interested.

We live 10 minutes drive away from Wentworth, go regularly to the garden centre & a walk around the village. But today we went to the big house 😊 and what an absolute gem on our doorstep, could not believe how beautiful it is and will be with years more work on it. We said with the absence of furniture you really appreciate the workmanship of the ceilings, fireplaces, doorframes….. it’s amazing & very lucky to be having its transformation. A beautiful, magnificent mansion ❤ many more visits in future to see the ongoing work. Thanks for showing 😊

The 8th Earl Fitzwillam died in a plane crash in the South of France in 1948. Also on board was his mistress Kathleen Kennedy sister of President Kennedy.

@@ged357 Hi! Yes it was! Season 5 showed the Marble Hall used as part of the Kremlin, possibly a shot of the exterior was also used... We love Wentworth and hope one day the Trust will be able to re furnish it... Best wishes Neil and Ant 😊

@jennycarter1149 Hi Jenny , there's a trust in place now, they've already re roofed the house and almost completed restoration of the coach house and stables... we understand that they hope to gradually refurnish the house 😊

Hi Neil and Ant this is one we havent been to yet it looks really wonderful and the rooms are on such a grand scale. We love the beautiful ceilings imagine being there in its heyday. The floor in the entrance was amazing . Would love a cup of coffee ☕️ in that tea room. We particularly liked that there were pictures showing how the rooms looked like back in the day. The trees looked beautiful in the sun and a wonderful view from hercules. Dave has dug his wooly hats out now its turning colder. Thanks for sharing this with us. Very best wishes Dave and Dawn ❤

Hi Dawn and Dave! We were blown away by Wentworth... it is HUGE! The frontage is officially the widest in the UK at around 660ft! Such a shame that the contents have all been sold off as it does feel very empty, that said you do get a real sense of how it must have been! It is like Kedkestons big brother !!! I hope the trust are able to refurbish and re furnish the house in due course... Thankyou for watching and so happy you enjoyed the video... Thankyou for watching and commenting... all the furniture was taken when the family sold the house [ much dispersed to different family members ] The Trust who now own the house are working very hard to restore the house already replacing thr roof at a cost of £8 million... They will gradually refurnish the house over the coming years... Best wishes 😊

The Wentworth Trust is successfully raising millions and has completely re roofed the main house. Currently they are restoring the huge stables in another multi million project so we are hopeful that the main house may slowly return to its former glory... 😀 they charge a relatively low entrance fee, there's a great cafe inside and they hold lots of events throughout the year. They're doing an amazing job which will hopefully pull this house back from the brink ... Best wishes 😊

It all got sold off because of death duties in the 1940s and again in the 1980s ... it does need furnishing to put the heart back into it but I understand they're focusing on making it structurally sound first... They recently had the main roof replaced at a cost of £3 million! You still get a real feel for how it must've been...

When the 8th Earl died the title & house went to a cousin but his wife & daughter got the land & most of the art, furniture, silver. Some of the contents had to be sold to cover death duties. Lady Juliet the 8th earls daughter is still alive at 88 years old & a very rich lady.

What a stunning estate. Thank you for sharing your tour! According to my husbands family geneology, his ancestors are the Wentworths and when we looked up this estate we were SO thrilled to learn more about it and to see its restorations. No as far as i have read no connections at all... they made their fortune from coal and farming in the UK and appear according to records to have been kind employers... thanks for watching and commenting

@@chrisisjustme7546 I understand that the branch of the family at Wentworth Castle at Stainborough had links to slavery, but not the family at Wentworth Woodhouse. Their wealth came from farming and forestry and then from coal and steel.
