The train station for the Bruins arena is an active station. It takes you underneath the arena. There are restaurants and team shops down there. Then you take an escalator up to the arena. Makes it super convenient for fans to take the train directly to the arena.

@@DNReacts definitely. The Boston train system go pretty far out into the suburbs of Boston too. So even people from 30 minutes away can catch a train instead of driving into the city and dealing with traffic and parking. Im about 90 miles/144km from Boston and I will often drive to a train station about halfway and then take the train in and walk around Boston from there.

Not to mention that a few years ago, they built a new entrance to the Garden called "The Hub On Causeway", making it easier to enter and exit the arena for Bruins & Celtics fans, but also for North Station that is underneath. It also acts as a mini-mall, with shops, resturants, a supermarket and even a movie theatre. It's a shame that the exterior shots didn't show it, because the buildings next to the Garden are part of the new entrance. That's also the site of the old Boston Garden, which was there from 1928-1995, and was razed in 1998 to make way for the new Garden. It was then a parking lot for the Garden for two decades, until 2018 when they decided to give the building a new entrance. It's a sweet entryway.

Here's the thing about indoor arenas: Buildings made primarily for hockey can generally convert to basketball with minimal issues. However, it does NOT work the other way around, because basketball has a much smaller playing surface. This is why, for instance, the Panthers don't play in the Heat's arena, and why the Islanders absolutely needed their own building. Just look up some of the atrocious sightlines at Barclays Center.

I used to be part of a conversion crew for the Florida Panthers. I would help place these special boards on the ice called ice decks,then take out the plexiglass and end boards before either setting up a stage for a concert or placing and putting together the floorboards for basketball. After the concert or the basketball game was done,we would get it ready for hockey again.

Guy from Tampa here. The arenas and stadiums are old but as far as Amalie Arena (where the Lightning play) there’s no need to mess with perfection. Most NHL players and fans will say it’s one of the best. The lightning bolt statue, the Tesla coils in the arena, and the great views from every seat (as well as the waterfront access) win favor season after season. As far as the Rays go, a new stadium was just approved to move forward. It will be extremely nice, if it makes it, but it’s also controversial because it’s being built across the street from the old one which is still not in Tampa. Agreed on the Bucs ownership. Many of us wish the Lightning owner would just buy the other Tampa teams. Jeff Vinik not only gave the lightning the funding to succeed, but revamped the district around the arena and gave more to local youth programs than anyone I can think of in our city’s history. Without looking at the numbers, I know he gives at least a million per year to small local charities, maybe more.
@adf0612
@adf0612 7 месяцев назад
I feel you there Vinik is a much better owner than the Glazers or Sternberg (not that saying someone is a better owner than Sternberg is saying much at all) but one thing I will say is the Glazers have done a much better job as owners of the Bucs than they have as owners of Manchester United and I say that as a fan of the Bucs and Man United as well as Amalie Arena being a world class venue thanks to Mr Vinik where as Raymond James is good enough for it’s age thanks to some mild investments from the Glazers but I can’t wait to get the Rays in their new ballpark the Trop has seen far better days

The Xcel Energy Center in Minnesota has jerseys from every high school hockey team in the state around the concourse, which is a nice little nod to the state tournament which is held there. High school hockey in Minnesota is a big deal (on par with high school football in Texas or basketball in Indiana). Small towns up north become ghost towns for a week if the local school makes the tournament.

I suggest you find arena conversions videos. Basically the ice is underneath the basketball court, with a rubber/plastic like covering, i.e. ice, covering, slight risers for courtside seats, and basketball court slightly raised off the covering, about 6" off the ice. The covering also acts as an insulator to protect the ice.

@gracielynn9623

I’m glad you asked about the capacity. It’s actually a mix of a few things… Having an extremely large capacity would mean that there will be a lot of spots where you will be watching from awkward angles, or from way in the air. It’s already difficult to see the puck as it is in so if your way in the back and very high up, it makes it so you’re just there to be there and not really enjoy the game. It’s also a little bit due to popularity. Hockey is not really the most popular sport in the United States. 19,000 capacity Arenas are relatively easy to fill compared to your, say, 40,000 capacity MLB Arenas, or 70,000 capacity nFL arenas. It doesn’t look as bad when a team with a poor record only brings in 13,000 fans. You can fill in the lower sections quite nicely and just not pan the camera up to the top. But if only 13,000 show up for an under performing team in a 65,000 seat arena, it would be quite hard to hide.

I used to work at a pro-level arena ages ago and I got to witness first hand how they use a Hockey Rink for multi-purpose. They have a "rink crew" that comes in on night shift(23:00-7:00A.M.) They have 15-25 crew members. They start by taking apart the hockey plexiglass + boards. Its all fitted together and bolted and/or screwed together. It probably takes about 2 hours with everyone working at the same time. They store it in the back of the arena. They then cover the ice surface with big pieces of wood that are precut/numbered. It all fits like lego. That takes another 2 hours. They then cover the wood with the appropriate flooring for the basketball event. They bring out the nets and benches for teams. It probably takes a big experiencer crew to do a switchover in 5.5-7 hours. Hockey rinks arent very fancy compared to European Football venues. Partly because they have to be built to hold in the cold and not allow in UV rays(heat). Theyre built like giant freezers basically. Thanks for reacting to Hockey. Its my favourite sport. I would love to watch a Premiership game live in the U.K. at some point between some monster rivals. That be something to see.

To answer your question about how they play basketball over the ice, the Operations crew will put a "Polar floor" (the brand name we use at my arena is called Prodeck) over the ice, then build the basketball court on top of it. Of course we also take out the glass, dashers, boxes, and benches, before converting it to a basketball court. In cities that also have Arena Football teams they put artificial turf down instead of the court... AND these arenas also host a lot of concerts and shows. To answer Nick, they don't "Ice out" in-between since that is a very long and tedious process.

A standard soccer ball is about 9" in all dimensions and if you average distance by time, a soccer player runs at and average of 6.6kms an hour. A puck is 3"x 1" and players skate an average of around 20kms an hour. A soccer ball generally travels pretty slowly, and even when kicked very hard starts to decelerate almost immediately. A puck is much heavier by volume, is solid and they are kept in a freezer before use to ensure there is minimum friction. A puck loses little, if any speed during a pass or shot on goal. A puck has a volume of 7 cubic inches a soccer ball has 381 - or to put in another way, a soccer ball is 54x the size of a puck and is generally being dribbled around at less than a third of the speed. The size of the stadiums is larger a reflection of that

As far as investment into Tampa Bay sports venues go, Amalie arena has actually had a ton of work put into it since the Lightning’s current owner took over in 2009. It was built in 1996 but has been heavily renovated since then. The pictures in this video didn’t really do it justice. The area around the arena has also been built up massively thanks to the Lightning as well. It’s easily one of the nicer arenas in the league and imo has the best in game experience out of any of the other NHL arenas I’ve been to. The Lightning are truly quite the success story and have a very interesting and colorful history that I recommend every hockey fan looks into.

Actually been meaning to ask you guys to react to a conversation video where they transform the arena from hockey-basketball and vice versa. Staples Center in LA host the Lakers, Clippers of the nba and Kings of the NHL and given that it’s LA also obviously host tons of concerts. Those fuckers at that stadium are busy

TD Garden looks even more out of place from the street. Since it's nestled behind those skyscrapers, the only part of the stadium you can see from Legends Way is the giant TD Garden/North Station sign. I remember the first time I went to a Celtics game and when I got there, I was like "Wait, where is the stadium?"

In terms of new teams, Vegas and Seattle were the first expansion (brand new) teams since Columbus in 2000. In between that, there was a team in Atlanta (the Thrashers) that moved to Winnipeg and became the new Winnipeg Jets in 2011

The arena in Seattle underwent a complete overhaul before the Kraken began playing. Saying that arena was built in 1962 is misleading. If we're not counting complete renovations, then technically Madison Square Garden is much older than 1968.

Apparently there have been three Madison Square Gardens. The first was built in 1879., the second in 1925 and the third in 1968. Looks like they are over due for a fourth. o

Just so you guys know, now updated theres a few more, however Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, MI is the nicest arena in the league, not by a lot, but the concourse level is absolutely massive and filled with tons of restaurants, stores, and cool artifacts from sports history, this is not me being bais, this is just based on features, the arena by far has the best setup and features for a hockey game, the architecture is absolutely amazing, many other arenas are as well, but Little Caesars Arena is just top notch, which is appropriate because before 2017 the Red Wings played at Joe Louis Arena which was one of the oldest and most outdated arenas in the league

the ice sits under the court so they just pick up all the puzzle pieces of wood to uncover the ice and put it back to switch back to basketball. the court is much smaller than the ice, so they usually have to move the seats around too.

There’s many ways to get to the Garden in Boston via train… the train station is called North Station, there’s the green line and orange line that stops there… also the commuter rail (purple line) that connects downtown Boston to the outer suburbs, those are the tracks you saw here. The platform is under the arena so fans get off the trains and go upstairs. The celtics also play there and they cover the ice with a surface and then put the basketball court on that surface. The basketball court is legitimately a bunch of squares that get put together like it was a giant puzzle

a lot of those newer arenas are for a hodgepodge of reasons, some are Expansion, like Honda Center, SAP Center, Xcel Center and of course T-Mobile Arena, some are Relocated franchises, like Colorado from Quebec City, Carolina from Hartford, and Winnipeg from Atlanta. Others are just Brand New arenas for existing franchises, like Little Ceaser's and UBS.

I don't know whether any such video exists, but one about the old arenas might be interesting. The old Boston Garden, used from 1928 to 1995, was infamous for its flaws--no air conditioning, obstructed-view seats, insufficient room for a full-sized sheet of ice, and potentially a dangerous firetrap. I wonder if modern safety laws were ignored until the new arena was built, which took many years longer than it should have. Even though I was young, I was one of those who thought that they should not replace a building with so much history. Then I attended my first game there and immediately changed my mind. It looked more a medieval fortress than a modern arena.

30:25 that would be Islanders (and don't talk about "those other guys" when you walk in there!). It's open now, and it's fantastic. Finally, a permanent home. Really, really short version - the Islanders have had a VERY very weird history. One of the greatest teams of all time with four straight Cups in the early 1980s, but also many, many terrible years after that. Bad management and ownership, and the constant threat of the team leaving. Finally, a bit of positive momentum in the last 10 years or so. Some solid playoff runs, and finally, a home. Their old Nassau Coliseum was a dump, and was called the "Nassau Mausoleum" in those many bad years, but it was OUR dump. That small, cramped, no-frills little barn absolutely came to life like no place else in the playoffs. Want some good classic hockey action to react to? 1984 - After winning four straight Cups including pure domination of Wayne Gretzky's Edmonton Oilers in the 1983 Finals, the Islanders return to the playoffs in 1984 to try for a record-tying fifth consecutive championship. They face their local rivals, the New York Rangers, in the first round. That first-round series goes to a deciding Game 5 at the Coliseum, and the Rangers tie it with less than a minute to go in the third period. Four years of championships, and 16 straight playoff series wins up to that point, are now at risk in front of their home crowd, threatened by the worst possible villain who can end it at any moment, with one overtime goal. This leads to one of the greatest overtimes ever. Watch that 1984 Islanders-Rangers Game 5 overtime in its entirety, it's about 10 minutes.

The Seattle arena is bizarre. It was originally just a pavillon for a fair or something. People really liked it so they decided to make it into a basketball arena, but it wasn't big enough. So they dig into the ground until it was. Only keeping the roof. I think they did that a second time to expand it. And then a final time after their basketball team moved to Oklahoma and they were trying to get a hockey team. The arena wasn't big enough for hockey so naturally they digged further down. Once again the only thing remaining is the roof. I have no idea why they love that roof so darn much in Seattle. It can't possible save that much money in construction cost with all the digging they are doing. So people enter the arena near the top of it now.

Hockey and Basketball typically get between 15-20 thousand fans. The “Big 4” as we call the major sports leagues in America (NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB) have the highest attendance. UFC, Boxing and soccer would be the next highest

You will find in America more but Canada as well when someone gets a new areana someone else will use that as a reason they need one as well and plenty of non-league cities will build one if it gets a team to move. The Penguins wanted a new one after the Steelers and Pirates got new buidings and flirted with Kansas City and Hamilton in Canada and then they city figured it out. Also new buildings get bigger concerts, wrestling and other indoor shows that some of the olders ones were struggling to accomodate

Seating capacity has to with what you cost effectively build for an indoor arena vs an outdoor stadium. NBA is much more popular than NHL but they both play the same number of games per season in the same size arenas. Check out the Winter Classic games the NHL plays in outdoor football stadiums each year.
