thanks for watching! This episode of Were They That Bad? is over the only NASCAR driver (and winner) with dwarfism, Rico Abreu. Rico has many accomplishments in the world of dirt racing, including 2 Chili Bowl wins and a USAC championship, but was he all that great in NASCAR?

I'm a big fan of Rico. I was at that truck race at Texas where he was so close to winning, was pulling so hard for him. NASCAR is about money anymore, not about talent, I don't think he was given a fair shake. He adapted pretty well, but he's better on dirt.

A driver like Rico Abreu would have been pretty dang awesome for Nascar overall. I mean, having dwarfism and drove one of the premiere series is still pretty amazing.

I’d say he shouldve stayed In nascar for a bit more years

Teams wanted Rico to bring 10 million in sponsorship with him and he couldn't swing it. Saw it in a Flo interview

@heetseeker8017 nascar is about money and he didn't have financial backing.

That’s mind blowing to me how he was a successful racer with dwarfism.

Well done video! Can tell you did a lot of race watching and research. I agree Rico was (still is) very talented behind the wheel. I was shocked when no one else picked him up in trucks for that next season. He had shown a lot of flashes - more so than other drivers still in NASCAR's top three series. He deserves another chance if he wants it. PS The driver who I thought had the most raw talent on dirt that DID NOT even get more than a few Eldora races was Bobby Pierce. I really thought he would get the same chance as Kyle Larson - and would say he was right there - talent wise.

While Rico came up "short" on having success in NASCAR, he has no "short"age of success and talent in dirt racing. And that's an accomplishment he should be proud of

Rico Abreu, Brad Sweet, David Gravel, all NASCAR busts. But they’re 10x better off now in the dirt world.
@nascarfan05
@nascarfan05 7 месяцев назад
Gravel shouldn’t be considered a bust since he ran less than 10 races between trucks and Arca.

It kind of sucks how someone with potential can have a pretty decent year but be one-and-done in NASCAR, but then some drivers can be visibly terrible for many years in a row and keep finding rides.

I wouldnt say he stunk. ThorSport, besides the 88 in 2016, just seemed kinda off that year. Cameron Hayley finished 11th in points and Rhodes came in 14th, while Rico was 12th. 2016 was a weird year in Trucks in general

@@racingwithjoe Honestly, what I remember most was how the cut to a 32 truck field was starting to take its toll on the smaller guys like Norm Benning.

Considering he would be 32 next year, I believe he would had made a successful career in either Trucks or Xfinity, that's if he has the right team to build upon like with Thorsport

I can understand why they pulled him behind the wall at Eldora - no reason to spend money on fuel, wear on truck/engine etc. for a one off start.

Rico was really good just a little bad . But if he hard stayed in nascar longer he would have been really good winning racing and making playoffs.

Let's be honest...he's a racecar driver 100%...but only got the nascar seat because nascar was trying to be more "INCLUSIVE"...
@Corky3D
@Corky3D 7 месяцев назад
What's your reasoning on he only got a ride because he's a dwarf? There's been several dirt racers to get K&N or Arca Rides, then if they did decent get truck or Xfinity rides. Rico did pretty decently in K&N and got a truck ride. How is that being "inclusive?"
@Lasukie
@Lasukie 7 месяцев назад
He got the seat because of sponsorship money and success in a lower division, not because nascar was trying to be more 'inclusive'. Nascar IS trying to present itself as inclusive, but it's a byproduct of people bringing money to the sport not the sport bringing people to perform poorly. It's still a sport and sports are a business. Drivers like Iwuji, Bubba and teams like 23X11 and Trackhouse exist because they bring nascar money, not because they're inclusive because of 'diversity'. You won't see a poorly performing driver with dwarfism in nascar for very long and indeed, we didn't. But that was more a product of Thorsport having a terrible year than it was Rico's fault.
