I was born in 69 rural Nelson, grew up on a huge farm with streams running through it and rivers nearby and waitbaited as children. Mom's Waitbait Fritters were so good! Dad would go down to Kaikoura in 70s with friends for a long weekend or week and return and fill the bathtub up with a dozen or more huge red crayfish hahaha. Feast time.

Sorry but the main reason for me commenting was that we were browsing around a flea shop in our village and I came across a framed black and white print of the Maoraki Bolders which ist now hanging in our holiday house in Portugal.

Try Bluff oysters, North Otago Jersey Benne new season potatoes, don't try the cheese rolls haha. Do any of the bush walks around Dunedin. Go down the high road of the peninsula - check out Sand Fly Bay & Sandymount Viewpoint on your way to the Royal Albatross Centre. Take a launch trip from Portobello out the heads of the harbour. Scenic helicopter ride from Dunedin is very good as well.

@@ItsaDrama 😊 Have been enjoying and laughing for your experiences - "how do those odd people from over there interpret all things NZ?" Dunedin is my home town. My grandparents house was 100 yards from the Steam Punk thingy, under the bridge (house no longer there). Those buildings, rail yard and harbour were my childhood playground. I have lived in Auckland and Wellington - Melbourne has been home far longer than my life in NZ. I visit often. The big round stones of Moeraki Boulders are substantially better than the onsite lunch rooms - of NZ wonders neither are awe inspiring. 😄 For the suggested peninsula high road journey - first stop at Rotary Park for wonderful views over the city and harbour. If you have time for a day trip - head south for Brighton & Taieri Mouth - beautiful beach there and you can buy fresh fish from the boats.

When I was a kid we had our summer holidays in Moeraki,I got absolutely fried on the beach there but it holds so many great memories. Did you see the memorial at Aramoana? I remember that day very well,I was at my girlfriends place across the harbour,we could hear the shots, then a line of cop cars going up the road and the police chopper overhead. Of course we didn't know what was happening at the time, but everyone knew someone that lost their life that day. Looking forward to part two, merry Xmas to you both!

I thought the same about Port Chalmers but I never saw anything come up for sale so forgot about it. There must be one agent in Dunners that covers all of Port Chalmers. You could get a crib and spend a couple months there every year. Love the South Island. You must do a trip to the other side some time. Glenorchy, Franz-Joseph etc. English and Scots settled the South Island thats why bldgs in Oamaru look like that and theyre made from the white stone from that area hence Whitestone Cheese. I can picture the big old sailing ships pulling into Port Chalmers with my great grandparents Farquharson-Jones and McPherson-Proctor to settle Otago. My Dad remembers visiting his grandfather who was sitting in a green tin tub up in Castle Larnach having a bath, thats pretty much all he remembers is the green tin tub

So cool you enjoyed my home town of Dunners aka Dunedin. Awesome you found out about tunnel beach there are lots of special little hidden away places like this. Aramoana is lovely i spent summer holidays at the crib/ bach when a child.. we call it a crib. when the tide is out you can walk through to rocks to a massive sand dune we would spend ages on that just had to keep track of tides. So wouldn't get stuck. I remember seeing penguins there. It might be penguin nesting area now ?? Did you walk out on the spit at aramoana? penguins /seals commen there. Across the other side of spit is where the albatross coloney is and lanarch castle. Can't wait to see nugget point lighthouse and catlins.

Hi Mel, we did walk out onto the spit and it was just gorgeous. That whole area is simply stunning, it was like being on a film set! ❤️ The only reason we found out about tunnel beach was from someone in this community, so we feel super lucky about that. Enjoy your week in Dunners, you might have us for neighbour's some time soon! 😁

Port Chalmers... I ride out that way regularly as I go for a hoon out to Aramoana (I use to live out there) There is a nice we lookout just above the town and looks out over the harbour... Moeraki boulders. They are interesting and there are few different theories on how they are formed... Moeraki is nice small settlement... stayed at the camp ground a few times... and done a few boat fishing trips from there... Fresh Whitebait isn't bad... But I grew up on it so is ok for a treat... Steampunk... I do a lot of steam punk.... have a full costume and all made my own props etc... (that's all on my other making woodworking channel) Queens birthday weekend they have steampunk parade and steampunk stalls and all etc... I have been it in the parade once or twice in full costume... (My avatar is one of my older costumes) I would show pics... but this is your video ... lol White Stone cheese... yum... that is all I have to say on that, every time we are in the area we stop and get some... lol I haven't been to "Tunnel beach" for a while... but then again I live here, and can go any time... However you fellas must be unfit... LOL (ok yes it is pretty step I will give you that one) Glad you will be going to the Catlins... there is heaps of things to see if you love nature... (and yes I ride that road many many... many many times... because twisties corners... lol) There use to be a Bike Rally Called "The Pissed Penguin" in the Catlins... you would have drove past the spot where it was held going to the Nuggets... them were the days...

I will tell you a story about my wife, Alison, and Dunedin. We went there on a miserable rainy day and decided to go go to their excellent museum. I have always liked museums although she was not so keen although she was born there. After a while she was missing and I started a search. My suspicions were aroused when I saw a nineteenth century replica of a horse drawn carriage with three well dressed dummies inside which we had seen earlier. I stepped over the do not cross red rope barriers and saw there were four! My wife was in the corner fast asleep. I showed quite a few people who couldn't stop laughing.

The first time I ever went in the Vortex at the Steampunk Museum, I was standing in there with my partner, back to the door (as it says on the outside not to open the door while the red light is on), trying to film it and these two old ladies just barged on in, slammed the door into my back and then stood there holding the door open yelling across to another friend of theirs outside. Hey Liz and B man, that was really cool, totally enjoyed that leg of your journey, I love Dunners, it's like stepping back in time as far as architecture goes, in most nz cities you see architecture fashions all mixed together as the cities grow, but in dunners it's almost as if they all went up at the same time, maybe they did I don't know. Aramoana is lovely little town but a shameful part of our history, its was our first real massacre, my uncle was a Vietnam vet, he brought back an ak47, but after Aramoana all automatic weapons were banned, so he handed it in to the police, he could have had it changed so he could keep it, but I think time had changed his feelings about the Vietnam War, as boy I tried to get to tell some war stories once- ONCE! ...I asked him what it was like being in a fire fight? ... he looked at me insulted for a moment, I thought he might even slap me, then he just said "I pisd my pants the first time" and looked away, he didn't seem mad, but it was obvious- even to a silly boy, that he didn't want to talk about it. Oamaru ...oar-ahh-ma-roo ...don't pronounce the r in boat oar- just run it straight into the ahh- and roll the r in kangaroo if you can- just run it all together Moeraki ...moy-ra-key moy like toy Hope you guy's are having a great time, safe travels
