Hike down into the gulf for a glimpse of Boiling Spring, where Indiana's subterranean Lost River bubbles up from it's underground path. The gulf is believed to have been a series of sinkholes that collapsed and slowly dissolved away, leaving an 8 acre "canyon" of sorts, with walls ranging from 25' to 95'. The 187 acre preserve is managed by the Hoosier National Forest Service, and is mostly undeveloped. It was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1972. Archaeological studies have found evidence of human habitation in the gulf up to 10,000 years ago.

This place is amazing during the right stage of flood. Beautiful place. I've only ever seen another person there once in over 100 visits.
@SlonesWildernessExpeditions
I've been there only twice, was the only person both times. Cool place, I'll need to remember to check it out sometime during higher water!

The side trail looks interesting. I've never seen a sink hole around here. I enjoyed learning about your area and the Lost River. Happy Trails.

Same here, if there's exposed rock, cliffs, etc., I want to explore it. Thanks for watching.

I hadn't heard of it either, until I got on the Forest Service website and went to their "Special Places" section for the Hoosier National Forest. Not something you see everyday! Thanks for watching.

Wow, you never know what's beneath your feet. I had the image of a bathtub drain when you mentioned the water draining like a whirlpool.

That's kind of the image I had too. I'd like to see it again sometime when the water is higher and draining into those swallow holes. As always, thanks for watching Tim!

I love the colour of that spring. Makes me think their is some sort of three headed swamp monster lurking in there.

Right! There are caves that can be entered when the water is low enough, but who knows what could be lurking in there.
