I’ve spent a lot of time in various cemeteries during my working days in the funeral business and have always been interested n gravestones and epitaphs. There used to be an old Huguenot cemetery in Lower Gornal that was gated off and I often wonder if it still exists. Heath Lane is well maintained I notice. A lot of the chapels were removed for various reasons. The memorial to paupers was moving. Tfs.
I actually live in Heath Lane just across the road from the main entrance. I have grandparents, parents, aunt and uncles buried there and no doubt I'll be there soon. I have a walk around there about once a week and I really do think it's very well maintained. Coal mining subsidence is why some of the graves look neglected but there is nothing that can be done about that; anything , such as a headstone that could fall on someone, is laid down. The staff there are really pleasant and helpful, if you're trying to find a family member who may be buried there they have a historical map showing who was buried where.
I appreciate the information especially the map. And yes Wayne I may also end up in there as well. It is quite pleasant to walk around the place and it does have a dignified feel many thank for the comment
Thanks for the new video Phil. I’ve passed the cemetery many times over the years, but never ventured in. So, I truly appreciated this one. It’s nice to see another Midlands connection to the mystique centred around Titanic.
I've got so many family and friends in that cemetery you wouldn't believe, but the memorial of the guy holding a motorbike helmet died just outside of the cemetery gates on heath lane, plus the was a pub called the Farley arms once, not sure if it's still there, but the Farley centre still is 👍
Thanks Paul for the info regarding the guy with the motorbike helmet, I knew there must have been some history about him I filmed it because it stands head and shoulders above anything else. Much appreciated
It’s interesting that you found Farley’s resting place, I would have thought his memorial would be grander than it was. He must’ve been quite a humble man.
I know a few folk who really enjoy walking through cemeteries and looking at the death dates on headstones, some just walk in there for the peace and quiet. Many thanks
Hiya bab, would you be able to do a walk around the Priory and thd whole estate, it used to be an old council estate but most of it got demolished and rebuilt, i knoe s few ppl whwt lived on thr estwte before snd after. Love the history you give of west brom❤
