The major issue is there is no pedestrian access across from Reserve Street or Pearl Parade. There will be a dense population due to the proposed developments on the eastern side of West Coast highway from Pearl Parade through to Reserve Street that will require access to Scarborough foreshore. Pedestrian overpass is required either at Reserve Street or Pearl Parade
Sink Scarborough Beach Rd and make pedestrian friendly no cars or vehicles. Need 6 lanes not 3 lanes, heavy trucks use this route can you imagine a crash? If crash on mitchell freeeway nothing will move...
Totally agree if you’re going to do something like this just make the whole thing covered and turn the surface into a corridor that prioritises pedestrians and links the other side of the highway to the foreshore, maybe some green space one lane each direction 40km speed limit,
I agree on four lanes for future-proofing if technically possible but three is still an improvement with the local traffic above. Love to see an additional overpass between Reserve Street and Pearl parade like the one North of Ventnor but South of Brighton.
Looks awesome! But surely three through lanes is a little short-sighted?? Is it not possible to make it an enclosed tunnel and keep at least four lanes below? You've already got bridges and turning lanes above it.... And hiding the highway below could allow for a nicer median and pedestrian environment.
Agreed!! Should be 6 lanes at least! With Scarb Bc Rd going under connecting with it as an underground interchange and even an underground carpark of 4000 bays so shoppers ands beachgoers can park. Make it pedestrian friendly I agree! But this time they need to consult with businesses and compensate for losses when it is built.
It's great something is being considered here but I it needs to be more people centred rather than car centred. Full enclosure of the tunnel and pedestrian focussed narrower road with active edges and good connectivity to a mass transit (tram) running north south down the coast and east west to the freeway!
Have all options been considered?? how about Light Rail or Bus Rapid Transit along West Coast Hwy up along Marmion Ave?? How about improving the existing bus services?? This should be a last resort and it reduces pedestrian crossing opportunities.
Wrong Public transport is one of the biggest waste of money a city can do and it serves no one. What Perth needs here is for the lanes to be expanded and more road extensions. Scarborough Rd should be six lanes not three.
@@richardbug3094 Jesus you’re kidding right? Lane expansion is a negative investment and makes traffic worse. Fancy cutting people off from our entire coast line so we can be like LA. What a scam.
The video fails to clarify the configuration at Ventnor Street. South-bound, through traffic must not emerge in time to access Ventnor St. Hale Road should be its first opportunity to access the suburban precinct.
We dont need another bandaid for car dependant infrastructure. We need high quality mass transit and walkable human scale neighbourhoods. No one will want to come to Scarborough to see the new highway. I would prefer beautiful beachside destination rather than some loud smoggy hole in the ground.
No pedestrian access from Pearl Parade region to the coast. This is a nightmare to cross right now and this concept looks like it will be worse, especially given the increase in traffic. The traffic noise at Pearl Parade is horrendous. I am in favour of an enclosed tunnel; aesthetics, noise, safety. I believe you are looking at short term quick options with this open trench. Yes a closed tunnel will cause a disruption for traffic but it can be managed if you want to find a solution. A closed tunnel is the only solution to this with more pedestrian access across entry points with major traffic underground. Consider how this would enhance businesses with this option.
I support this project strongly but worry about (a) traffic management during construction and (b) the temptation, particularly for motorcycle riders, to speed for the noise they create. I guess fixed speed cameras will quell that temptation in time. Actually, for what it's worth motorcycles sometimes speed to more than 160 km/hr on West Coast Highway past Ventnor St in the small hours. Can we have a couple of fixed cameras now?
Lack of Traffic Police. I don't know why the Government doesn't invest in more traffic police officers, 600-1200. The fines will pay their wages and there is no shortage of work. WA has double the fatality rate of Victoria and WA like QLD has almost non existent traffic enforcement. Government has kept a 'symbolic amount' for political announcements on Easter and Christmas road safety campaigns. its a joke. No common sense. Make roads safer with police on the roads and the fines will pay their way!! No cost to Government!!!
I've been annoying my wife for many years that this should have been done so it is great to finally see what appears to be a great layout, however surely with all the technologies in minining. boring out etc, you could have factored in 4 lanes (aka a dual carriageway). You don't need a large median strip, just a tall enough, strong enough divider. Also with intesection of Scarborough Beach Rd and West Coast Hwy, why wouldn't you hae a sunken intersection so that the heavy volume of traffic is not clogging up the single lane up top causing potentially more congestion and pollution? Love the tram concept, LONG OVERDUE for not just Scarborough but other major attraction locations along the coast and inland.
Those 3 lanes will cause soo many crashes!. and that barrier is also a bad design... imagine if you're on that lane and the barriers open up on you... That is another dangerous crash that will happen. If anything, make the exit single lane that can turn left and right and add another lane under it ( will be 4 lanes instead and safer )
Absolutely!!! Excellent point!!! Make it 6 lanes, build for future... Heavy trucks use this route and special consideration needs to be given.... oops no consideration was given Roe 8/9 after 85% of Roe Highway was completed.. Labor cancelled it!!
Dont reduce it to 3!!! Make it 6 because Perth is growing. If you can do same level, put 3 on top of the other. Layer cake. And make Scarborough Beach Rd a full pedestrian area. Put local traffic UNDER. put some lawn and trees on the mall.... make it green!!!!!
I don't agree with adding more lanes as that will exacerbate car use and traffic (Jevons paradox/induced demand) but I do like the idea of making it more green, though might be difficult.
@@nihongo02341 You're right, I don't, though I do occasionally make my way to the area. I agree, its horrible but I'm just saying, supplying more lanes for more cars will likely not fix the traffic issue. Adding the extra 3 lanes (to a total of 6) will most likely act as quick fix. Sure, traffic is in and out of Scarborough quickly, but then it will bottle neck at adjacent suburbs.
@@bumbelbee500 So reducing the amount of lanes will fix it? You need to drive West Coast highway or even stand for half an hour at corner of Scarborough Beach Rd and see how many heavy trucks use it. It is a MAJOR thoroughfare. Adding an extra lane to gt eastern highway was the best thing ever between airport and Burswood. It's not a "quick fix" but a long term solution. Sooner or later it will get done and roads in Perths Western suburbs will get a lane expansion as the Mitchell freeway is too congested and when a crash happens there is nowhere for traffic to go to. Go to cottesloe at 4pm. Leave Cottesloe at 4:30pm then travel to Butler via West Coast highway and Marmion Ave. Tell me how you go. Albany Highway, Canning highway, Stirling highway especially, Wanneroo Rd and Alexander Drive should all be upgraded to 3 lanes in either direction. Marion ave and West Coast highway and Stock Rd should be upgraded to 3 lanes either direction in the next 10 years. Harborne St Wembley and Guildford Rd Guildford where local government have reduced two lanes either direction to one should reverse it. It blocks traffic. Gt Eastern Highway Midland needs to be 3 lanes minimum as traffic is crazy.
Actually this will improve Scarborough, make it more livable. As long as they don't decrease the lanes from 4 to 3. It should be increase from 4 to 6... layering if necessary with bottom as a tunnel. Local traffic should be under Scarborough Beach Rd.. make it a full on mall with lawn and trees...
Bruh, only one lane roads in Scarborough 👎 and only 2 lanes in any one direction underneath. That wouldn't even be enough for our current traffic, let alone in 10 years 🙄 Just build a proper tunnel there with six lanes
A better process, continuously engaging with all stakeholders, is required for major infrastructure projects such as this, to achieve better acceptance and better use of available funds; • The proposal by Main Roads, for a cutting through the heart of the Scarborough Node, is completely unacceptable - it would be unsightly, magnify traffic noise and interfere with pedestrian movement. It would be an urban design disaster. • An alternative project, that would have a major influence on the Scarborough Node, is the Stock Road Tunnel - see "Perth Transport Plan for 3.5 Million People and Beyond", published by the Department of Transport in June 2016, where there is reference to the Stock Road Tunnel as a Feature Project as part of The Freeway Network @ 3.5 Million and Beyond in Figures 18, 19.. If this was to proceed it would have many benefits, including greatly reduce through traffic on West Coast Highway, allowing it to be down-graded to a slow speed coastal tourist road. The new Stock Road Tunnel route could be achieved without significant impact on the City of Nedlands and has the support of George Gear, Mayor of the City of Melville; • In line with the concept of emphasizing West Coast Highway as a slow speed coastal tourist road, it could be retained much as it is now, as a four-line divided road over most of its length, but restrained through Scarborough, calmed to one moving lane in each direction, without any road reserve widening. If at some time in the distant future, after the Stock Road route has been implemented, and traffic congestion through the Scarborough Node is considered to be intolerable, a tunnel could be contemplated. An appropriate model is the tunnel under King’s Cross in Sydney, which provides an effective by-pass for New South Head Road, under the Kings Cross activity centre. If really needed, a tunnel could be installed under the road through Scarborough, allowing pedestrian scale activity above, including trams if considered appropriate. However, this would be a long way into the future.
By the paradoxical GM/Ford sponsored planning doctrine we adopted for no good to ourselves in the 50’s and never thought to replace. Every place is only a thoroughfare to arrive at another place. Nowhere can actually be a place to be arrived at. Like a one ended stick.
