I personally think the growling adds character and it's a good way to not strain on high notes. A potential wicked witch of the west, can't have perfect, princessey vocals like some Elphabas. Her and Idina Menzel are great Elphabas vocally, I can't comment on the acting.
Team Queen’ s Fearn Tucker and Bentley Forever agree. I fell into an “Alice Fearn-Defying Gravity” hole and every video of her singing this song is incredibly consistent. She is a very skilled singer.
I saw Rachel Tucker on Broadway a few years ago and she was amazing but when I saw Alice last year it was the first time I've felt truly blown away when watching a show (like to the point of being speechless)
It’s more than two years since Alice’s last performance as Elphaba and -well- the fact that we are still listening to her defying gravity speaks volumes. Best Elphaba by far! She brought soooo much more to her than her predecessors
When I first heard Alice's Elphaba I couldn't get used to her vocal too,but that's what makes her different from the other elphabas. Maybe some people think she struggles on those high notes,but for me it perfectly portray how fierce this role "could" be.What I say is Elphaba doesnt have to be fierce,but it would be interesting and impressing to see one like Alice.
I wish I could've been there today, but I got to see her live in the 2pm matinee show after West End Live, and she just blew me away. I wasn't sure if she'd be there because on the screen that shows the casting, it said that her standby, Laura Pick, would be playing the role. I'm glad that Alive made it back to the theatre in time to do the show. I had to squint a few times bc I wasn't sure if it was her or not, but once she started speaking, and then singing, I 100% knew that it was her. I absolutely loved her For Good with Sophie. Definitely one of the best Elphabas I have ever seen, and I have seen my fair share of Elphabas from the number of times I've seen Wicked.
Same here, went to see the matinee after seeing her at West End Live 2018. Was super confused with the cast board at the beginning - but especially her Defying Gravity just blows the roof of the Apollo Victoria in this unmistakable way. She's absolutely amazing and such a special Elphaba!!
Antje Hermann I 100% agree with you. My first Elphaba was Alexia Khadime back in 2009, so she will always hold that little spot as one of my favourite Elphabas, but all the other Elphabas I have seen in the numerous times I have seen Wicked, they were all amazing. But Alice Fearn is definitely one of the best by far.
Yesterday I came back from the west end performance of Wicked and Alice was So INCREDIBLE! If you think she is good here, you need to watch her live in the theatre. Me and my School had chills!
wow..best Elphaba,.so full of character and a beautiful voice..she saves her voice to bless us with those last few notes, which is so smart on her part.

Sarah Louise no I never said that Willemijn has a high range ( I don't know anything about singing and techniques ) ! You said that Rachel and Alice were too powerful for Willemijn which, I said, wasn't true after MY opinion only !
Gutted that Sophie and Alice didn’t perform For Good like they did with Willemijn and Suzie last year 😭 anyways, Alice completely nailed it (like always!)
I saw alice last night in the show at the apollo. And this song got me in tears, shes one special lady. And at stage door she is one of the nicest celebs ive met. And shes gorgeous, green and not xx
I saw Wicked back in late May and it was AMAZING!!!!!!! I LOVED IT!!!!!!!!! I went with my Orchestra group, we r from California and we took a plain out to NYC, we went 4 an entire week!!!!! And it was so FUN AND AMAZING!!!!!! My BEST and FAVORITE part of NYC was seeing Wicked!!!!!! Elphaba had an AMAZING, BEAUTIFUL, STRONG VOICE AND the good witch was sooooo FUNNY AND ALSO HAD A BEAUTIFUL VOICE, I LOVE her cover on "Popular" She had a great voice for it!!!!!! And it was hilarious!!😅😅😂😂 And they were both BEAUTIFUL!!!! I LOVE HOW Elphaba fell in love with the "scarecrow" that was beautiful!!! AND MOST OF ALL I LOVE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TWO WITCHES!!!!! But anyways my Orchestra and I performed at the Macy's Store!!!! It was just amazing and one chance in a life time!!!!!!!
Wow, another excellent portrayal of elphaba. And I love the evilness brought to it. Which really should be there in the change of the character. Not sure about so much growling, but it did bring character. I give the performance an A

Probably should have waited till the 23rd of November when I see Wicked (so it was a surprise)... but OH MY GOSH! I can tell this is DEFINITELY worth flying over from Australia for 😍
Truth is all the leading ladies over the years are great ( you don’t get a west end lead unless your good ) then it’s down to personal preference which you like best
That was absolutely brilliant 😆 the only elphaba I have seen is the fantastic Kerry Ellis, it’s my wish to see Alice and Sophie but I can never get down to London 😪
