Sunak threw the local Conservatives under the bus by not calling a GE. Quite a price to stay in government for a few more months. Still, we have not seen a no confidence vote within the Tory party. This is somewhat surprising given that the Red Wall Tories must realise they have nothing to lose at this point. They will go down just like the local Tories unless something changes drastically. Sunak will not bring that change.

Largely because to them it isn't a f*ck up. The poor (and even the middle class) have become poorer while the mega rich rake in more than ever and pay less tax. Public services have been slashed and funds funneled to private associates of Tory politicians and donors. Conservatives have been vastly successful for those they represent. They've done everything they were meant to do. The only thing they didn't manage to get away with was the Truss plan.

Why would they be popular? They are in opposition and have been out of government for 14 years. They haven’t had the power to do anything that would make them popular. They are going to win because they are not the Tories. Once they’re in power we’ll see whether they can become popular.

In councils, seats etc where they are predicted to be tight/swing seats it is particularly important to get out. 1508 represents roughly 0.25% of al valid votes cast. If just a few hundred of those people hadn’t turned up, stuck with the incumbent or voted differently the result would have been different. This result is the ultimate example of how important it is to vote as you can’t be sure of the win unless you do. Right now there will be a few Andy Street/Tory would-be voters that stayed at home presuming the win that will be kicking themselves
