Thanks for sharing. I remember reading the large carbody GE electric Virginian units ran on 11,000 volt AC current. The trolley pressure was so high it would interfere with nearby TV and radio broadcasts. I'm curious about the units in this video that had a pantograph and side rods. Does anybody have information on them?
Alco-Westinghouse EL-3a built around 1925 with 7125 HP, usually paired in 3 unit configurations, served on the railway until the Virginian was acquired by the Norfolk and Western in 1959 and I believe they ran a few more years under the N&W until de electrification of the line
This could have been taken around the time of the 1957 NRHS convention, which was held in Roanoke, and featured a trip on the Virginian. I've seen other movies taken during that convention.
There’s a reason it’s not around anymore, infrastructure is too expensive, and the electricity demands couldn’t keep up with power demands from the locomotives in the event of a traffic increase. The Milwaukee Road suffered from that issue constantly
Very Rare TO See That Virginian Railway 2-6-6-6 AG Blue Ridge Sitting There Awaiting Assignments Too Bad There’s NO Footage OF Them IN Action Before All The AG Blue Ridge 2-6-6-6 Articulateds Got Cut UP For Scrap
IF IT Says VIRGINIAN ON The Tender IT Would BE A Class AG Blue Ridge IF IT Says Chesapeake & Ohio ON The Tender IT Would BE A Class H8 Allegheny Understand The Difference Between The Two Types OF Articulated Engines👍
