Just saw this movie. I didn't think anything to come close to the original West Side Story but this remake was SPECTACULAR !!!!! Rachel Zegler has the voice of an angel! And putting Rita Moreno in the move was a stroke of pure genius! And yes, I cried my eyes out....
I literally just saw the movie in theaters! It was so good! At the end I was sobbing so hard that you could hear it over the movie and my friend who never ever cries over movies cried too! The original will always be a classical masterpiece but I can say whole heartedly this is the best remake ever.
Omg I was literally fighting at the end to not be openly SOBBING. Had to steady myself and gain my composure before I could stand up lol. It was so beautifully done, I already want to watch it again.
@@marlenaturpin3128 I have no idea.. She cried in the fricking Clifford movie and she thought it was entertaining when Riff and Tony died? I don’t get it
I'm soooo excited. My mother (who was at the premier of the 1961 version, in New York), and I are headed to the theater in about 20 minutes... to see the new version. Mommy was 20 years old, in 1961. She's just weeks away from turning 81, and here we are- going to see the new version, together. I'm so blessed to have this experience with her.
My mom and I saw WSS on Sunday and really enjoyed it! I loved the “Cool,” Number where Tony was singing it with Riff!! Neat twist I wasn’t expecting! And the “Tonight,” Number holy smokes hat was good! The dancing was incredible as well!!
I think he'll win Best Supporting Actor for this. Rachel will win Best Actress. Ariana will win Best Supporting Actress. Plus... Best Picture, Best Director, and more.
@@gabrielleclennon6589 Where does it say that? I cant find an article anywhere?? Im pretty sure he just denied it and said it was "legal" because she passed the age of consent by two days
OMG! This must be beautiful! Can't wait to see it with this new twist, done by none other than the geniuses of Spielberg. I first saw this live on stage in 1985.
Superb film! Gripping, moving, the actors are perfect and act in a passionate way, dancers are superb. In my opinion, Spielberg´s Masterpiece, in a different genre than the one we're used to see him direct. I highlly recommend it! 👏👏👏👏
Steven Spierlberg.... Thank You a lot, I love you, I admire you...you still going strong...i think it's just great to culminate such an impressive artistic career with such a beautiful tribute to your dad and to the Cinema
Saw it two days ago at a fan screening. It was PHENOMENAL. Also, I hate them For starting this video with Rita Moreno’s ‘somewhere’ because I just burst into tears.

I did enjoy it as it was more authentic however I feel only the young interested in musicals theatre and people of my age will love it. Gone are the days where people went on mass with their partners to the cinema, its a different era now
Me too... I had to hold HARD my tears back a couple of times... not just for some sad moments...but for the magnificent spectacle! I'm going back to the theatre on wednesday to cry like a baby this time.
Spielberg never dissapoints! This remake turned out to be another instant classic. The cast is extremelly talented and It's like a timeless dream brought to life with the unique Spileberg's magic. I'm going wednesday to see it again :)
I saw this in the movies on a field trip with school. I’m in 9th grade and for my final I have to write an essay on the similarity’s and differences between this movie and Romeo and Juliet. If anyone who’s seen this movie and knows anything about Romeo and Juliet can reply to this comment to help me out a little that’d be great😃
Similarities would be the tension between two groups, the intensity of the romance, the deaths from the confrontations, and the misinformation that leads to the tragic ending. Good luck on your paper. I used to be a teacher-hope I helped!
Yeah, so it is a modern retelling of the story. The Sharks and Jets are rhe Montagues and the Capulets. They have changed the warring families into race tension in US history. Living in older times meant you were more likely to be abandoned completely if orphaned so many of these young kids were each others family, or fathers worked so much, male role models were people on the street with you. The big difference to me is the reason the groups came together, so in R&J it was a simple as warring families. In WSS the immigrants are coming in and are being hired into all the lower paying jobs, which to the middle class and higher are the jobs they don't want but these are the jobs the poorest needed, so when Puerta Ricans were being hired for cheap, the poor in the area became poorer, so became hostile (this isn't completely historically accurate as this wasn't a white area at this time anyway) as these people (also immigrants) have been dragged through the mud by Americans just to be put second to other immigrants by the same Americans. While the Sharks came together because of the Jets attacking their community, stealing vandalising to a group of people who were here for the same reasons their own families immigrated. The song America covers it well, they're all chasing a dream that wasn't designed for them.
1/ Did you SEE this version? If not, wth are you talking about? 2/ This is NOT a remake. It’s a reimagining of the 1957 stage version. Hence the songs being rearranged, etc. 3/ The original FILM is one of my all-time favorites. I’ve seen it dozens of times. I honestly didn’t know until recently that none of the leads in the original films sang their own parts. I did not know until recently that the Puerto Rican characters wore brown FACEPAINT in the original film. The only Latino in the original film was Rita Moreno. And the brownface? She hated it. And rightfully so. There are many shades of white skin with various Caucasians; blacks…and of course Latinos. Why on earth make them uniformly BROWN? Because it was 1961! 4/ Of course you can prefer the original film. But to dismiss this out-of-hand?
Who gets the marginalized immigrant’s story and worked very hard to bring in Puerto Rican voices. Watch the background work they did. Through their research they even found Rita Moreno’s lost brother whom she hadn’t seen since she was FIVE YEARS OLD! And Rita is also an executive producer.
That's a pretty racist thing to say. Consider he's jewish and made schindler's list with painstaking detail to historical accuracy, i think spielberg is pretty sensitive to racism. He's done a lot to correct errors from the original.
New West Side Story: 1. Good idea to have Rita Marino inserted into the Steven Spielberg script of *West Side Story* 2. Best Actress role for Oscar nomination for Spielberg's version will be Maria (Rachel Zegler) and then Anita (Ariana DeBose) for supporting Oscar nomination. I think Rachel Zegler's acting for Maria, was better than Natalie Wood in Robert's Wise production. 3. Second choice for best supporting actress: Rita Marino. (yes again) 4. I did not like any of the character actors choice for either the Jets or Sharks in this Spielberg version. There was no a manly handsome guy in either gang. 5. I did not like the first act of the Spielberg version as much as the Robert Wise/Jerome Robbin's version, however the second act of Spielberg's version made up for the 1st act's shortcomings. Spielberg's first act of his movie was too, dark. 6. My choice for which movie was better would be the flawless *1st* West Side Story. Robert Wise/Jerome Robbin's version was the better direction in the 1st Movie version of the play. However the second act of Spielberg's version made tears come from my eyes, but don't tell anybody as I don't want my manhood questioned. 7. In the first movie the Jet gang gave respect for the little girl playing on the ground and walked around her play area. In the Spielberg version the Jets ripped up the little girls artwork on the ground. I could not get behind the Jets after that. 8. The dance scenes in both versions were equally good, however the Robert Wise/Jerome Robbin's version had all better camera composition on all frames. The colorful lighting on the Robert Wise/Jerome Robbin’s movie made a lot of scenes magical. 9. Spielberg claimed he did not want to copy the first, Robert Wise version, however he did in the opening. In the first, Wise version, we have an aerial shot flying over Manhattan, in Spielberg's version we have an aerial shot flying over the demolished section of the gang area with same Robert Wise sounding intro music. 10. Spielberg's version of West Side Story will be nominated for *Best Picture* Oscar this year. However, from the *WOKE* Hollywood, they might choose another low budget foreign movie with another language made movie like Parasite with no whites in it, that nobody will see, but won for diversity's sake. Parasite movie (looked like a college student made film) winning Best Picture over *1917* a real professional movie. And like Spielberg's movie, *Saving Private Ryan* that did not win Best Picture, which it should have, got beat by that that terrible love movie *Shakespeare in Love* again, that nobody saw. 11. Why couldn't Spielberg worry about that most all the actors should be Peuto Rican have to be Puerto Rican? That could be looked as racist decision on WOKE Spielberg. High class acting is art, that a great actor could pull it off being a Puerto Rican even if he is not in real life a Puerto Rican. Yes we hated all the 1940 movies where they always picked a white actor to play an Asian, that obviously did not look even near an Asian. The great Spielberg would deny another race to play any role unless they are the same race of the character portrayed? This is a slam in the face of all actors. Example, he could have used actors from any South American country or other country as long as they really looked and acted Puerto Rican. Come on man! Let all actors try out from any race as long as they really look and act the part. 13. What was that freak dark character tranny character that used to be a tom boy girl in the Robert Wise movie? We could see in the Robert Wise movie that this was a tom boy girl that we liked. However in this movie, we don't know who this scary creature from hell was in Spielberg's version. Spielberg was again trying to be WOKE by picking a real tranny freak character from this year’s 2021 to make the LGBTQ people today happy. That demonic freak character was a bust. 14. There will be other Oscar nominations beside best picture for this one.
I went to see it yesterday I have to say the cast is not well casted the movie is so boring and I don’t understand why u keep saying is good.. I will have to say that the only character I like and was well fit for the role was Anita from 1 to 10. = 4
