From Stratford High School's production of WEST SIDE STORY- here is the scene at the drugstore with Collins Rush as Tony and McGregor Dalton as Riff, followed by Collins singing "Something's Coming"
This song is a prime example of "Tony" cutting off the ends of words, or notes, when they should be carried through. He needed better coaching. The emphasis on last notes makes all the difference, giving the song significance. Whereas now it sounds unimportant. Look how "Maria" emphasizes the word "pretty" in "I Feel Pretty". She puts the effect on the all-important last word of a phrase. It's his posture, he's not standing straight, and he's slight to begin with. He needs to use all his chest to produce the sound which is supported by the breath. Bending over is handicapping his voice. He could do so much more with this song. At moments he has it, then he loses it.
Mitchell Thomas High school is where you need to learn this stuff. She’s not insulting him, she’s giving constructive feedback. She is totally right too, good posture and emphasis on words. The song did not seem like it was an important song when he sang it, yet it is very important.
You should watch the late Lenny rehearse this with Jose Carreras and know how notoriously difficult it is to navigate the tricky time signature changes and the attack on consonants at the right time and the fact this 15 year old kids nails it is achievement itself.
