@@eckankar7756 Not true. I was born and live here. I have traveled and lived in many states. I missed my home of West Virginia. It is a gorgeous outdoor recreation area. The scenery is just lovely. Where I live in the north, it has a few steel mills left, gas wells everywhere. I live close to Pitts Pa and Ohio. So many options to choose from. The ppl here, are warm, welcoming and kind in West Virginia.
They have to improve the infrastructure for this to work … internet service is terrible and inconsistent. Dirt roads everywhere still. I own a house in WV, but don’t live there due to the lack of opportunities for my family.
I think the people most likely to be enticed by the program would be more likely to live in cities like Clarksburg, Charleston or Martinsburg, where connectivity is comparable with just about anywhere else, at least one interstate highway feeds through and a commercial airport is within an hour drive. Some will want to live in the sticks, but that comes at the cost of certain lifestyle encumberments.
A shame that they are paying people to move to WV as opposed to putting that money back into a heightened quality of life for the state’s existing residents.
@Mithrandir the Grey no one wants to move to your shithole state bruh. You couldn’t pay most people twice that to move to the fastest shrinking state in the country. Because it’s the fastest shrinking for a reason
@@mithrandirthegrey7644 No loss to me. I'm much more interested in decent paying work (that doesn't result in me dying from black lung because my boss cheats me out of my benefits) than I am with having a lot of room.
A heightened quality of life for those on welfare/ssi is more important than attracting new taxpayers to the state? Who do you think supports those people with their "low quality" of life? They need to help themselves.
At this point, West Virginia is just trying to bring a few thousand people into the state economy as it hemorrhages residents. People who work remotely tend to work in lucrative tech/finance/consulting positions and their state income/sales tax proceeds could go a long way toward helping others in the state. This is something the state should have undertaken YEARS ago. It could have been something to stem the current of West Virginians streaming out-of-state, but now it's a desperation move. The stakes are much, much higher now. I hope it works..
I accidentally drove into West Virginia once...my cousin freaked all the way out 🤣🤣 she said "AW HELL NAW WE GOTTA GET THE HELL OUT OF THIS STATE"....As I got older I understand why now
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l4aAIF-iW9U.html The Whitaker family is what really fascinated me about the state. I never been to West Virginia.
I actually think he is doing a great job representing a very red state. It's a testament to his effectiveness that he was even re-elected. Whatever republican eventually replaces him will be far worse.
I lived in Morgantown for a year… it’s such a beautiful state! I also drove past many confederate flags everyday and when I went up into Albright there was a FULL KKK hood & robe in the window of an abandoned store 🥴 not for people of color.
@@Optimus19572 yeah! Its a beautiful state. Just dont look at the opioid addicts, the HIV ridden population, or the poor districts. Other than that, its great!
@@killerbuzzit347 Hit it right on the head!! The national media likes to hide their HIV capital status. We been knowing they’re an Opioid rest haven. Somebody promised them coal was coming back and they believed it, sad
Yikes that place looks like it's decaying and the wifi and cell phone reception would be extremely shoty! Not exactly what digital nomads are looking for.
It DOES suck!!! They have Ben TRYING for YEARS to get broadband/WiFi to THE WHOLE STATE....there are still parts that have weak or even NO wifi/cell service....and as far as TV almost no one has cable....most have DirecTV or Dish Network.....
Exactly! Our Governor would rather coach both a girls and boys high school basketball team and be Governor than focus on broadband. Internet is monopolized in most areas. No incentive for e-commerce.
Don’t do it. I’ve lived here my entire life and this place’s beauty simply does NOT outweigh the amount of unincorporated, uneducated trash that plagues this poor state. There’s no market in a state with notorious poverty and ghost towns.
So I guess the idea is to attract a bunch of programmers like myself, where your dollar stretches further. On the one hand, it totally makes sense. We're all working from home now, so why live in San Fran or NYC? On the other, there's just too much wrong with a place like W Virginia. I couldn't live there.
Still a very tough sell. They don’t even fix the bridges but close them resulting in some people not being able to go anywhere. Oops, my husband said that was Kentucky, not WV. It’s McConnell’s fault.
I don’t know about all that. Last time I went to West Virginia on vacation people stopped and stared when I walked down the street. I take it they don’t see many minorities there.
They do that with any new person. I have been going there every summer for 36 years and when I first arrive they always do this, until they realize I am around for a bit and then they let you be. It's like a neighborhood watch, but there are definitely more bad apples there than most places.
Several million people...obviously. And you realize what f a bunch of people leave big metros for WV, it will mean transplanting a bunch of liberals to a red state. 😂😂😂
I grew up in a large, upper middle class family in the northern panhandle (Wheeling). It was genuinely a really good childhood and while Wheeling is by no means a big city, it’s not a tiny place either, it has a lot, good community, it’s beautiful, and it’s an hour from Pittsburgh and two from Columbus. Many of the neighborhoods are full of 100 year old Victorian homes and I lots of kids to play with and really amazing schools. My public high school genuinely was one of the best high schools with incredible opportunities and facilities. And I say all this from my West Virginia University campus. Im living in Morgantown now. It’s a beautiful and great area as well. I love WVU, and I can’t begin to act like this state sucks. But while there are these great things, I see the limited opportunities. I see that as a future teacher I will make very little. There is * a lot * of poverty here. I grew up in an area of WV with much less poverty than say, southern WV, but it’s still everywhere. There is a culture of racism and bigotry greater here than other areas of the country. It’s not a perfect place. Is it a shut hole like many people claim? No. It’s not. There’s a lot of nuance to WV. And I would like to see it improve.
@@kets4443 it’s very cheap here. Can get a very nice apartment for well under 1000. Even under 700. I am currently living in Wheeling again, but probably am going to move because I simply prefer city life. But it’s not inherently because of Wheelings faults. I love the homes in Wheeling, it has plenty of amenities and is close to Pittsburgh. There are also many very nice/ cute areas. It’s definitely not perfect tho. I’m glad to see many improvements to it tho over recent years.
I definitely agree. WV is my home state. I moved back after 33 years. We have lost population and jobs thanks to our lousy leadership. We have depended on coal for decades it's a dying industry that's not coming back. No one wants to acknowledge this fact. And unfortunately these failures keep getting reelected which I'll never understand. I'm planning my move.
I am black and from this state not by choice but my parents both moved here in college and never left. However, the state was getting better but has now fallen off. I hate seeing so many bad comments about my state. There are great and wonderful people here but it is a dying economy. It’s a beautiful state it is. There’s not much culture or diversity in the state for people of color. Jobs are here but probably not jobs people want. I have found on my hunt for a new job that the better jobs with better pay mostly require experience to some degree and a higher education degree. This state could do better with infrastructure yes and could do more to keep young adults in the state. I also work remotely now and it has been better for me. However, there’s still more that needs to be done. It’s not the most appealing state, no. I admit some areas are better to be than others for someone of color but do not be afraid to travel here or travel through. For the most part everyone keeps to themselves and they won’t bother you if you don’t bother them.
i live in southwest virginia and there are a lot of people of color here because its where virginia tech is, and also there just are, but i'm an hour from west virginia. i went to west virginia recently, drove through charleston i think it was, there were rolling valleys and bridges everywhere, everything was dripping with green trees, it was such a pretty city!!
Unfortunately after the chemical spill fiasco, most of the chemical companies are leaving. I've moved back here twice with jobs and companies have moved again trying to get out of the regulations. We are about to build a couple million dollar plant with a dozen near 6 figure jobs and just the thought of going through the red tape to put it here canned the idea. Without coal and the chemical industry, WV is going to see much darker days. I'll of course have to leave again but I'll come back to retire.
My friends and I went to WV mountains for vacation. We drove around and every stop we made, whether it be Walmart, restaurant or whatever, every single person was starring at us. As if they have never seen a Hispanic person before.
Born and raised in charleston WV. I threw in the towel and moved to Raleigh North Carolina 3 years ago for better job opportunities, entertainment, more recreation, diversity, warmer climate, closer to beaches, business ventures etc. No regrets leaving, I've done much better in the Carolinas job & business wise. If WV can afford 12k incentives, it should aim to help the existing struggling residents and elderly populations first. Smh. It's home, beautiful mountains, and I'll always visit as long as my parents are there... but they are wanting to soon leave one day too.
I was born in New York. Grew up in West Virginia and I went to college in Charleston the guy I rented off of was from the Philippines I am I the Indian descent I got along great with everyone I never did a spearance any kind of racism ever
We won one of these contests last year (wasn't through Ascend). We still haven't been paid and we lost our remote work job due to poor infrastructure. It's going to be a literal miracle to get a job paying the same. WV is beautiful but I'm starting to regret this decision.
Pretty good. have a brother near Harper's Ferry...but only got there recently...but he is retired from the news media and would not be caught dead here to tell you about it...

Broadband sucks and in many rural areas is monopolized by Frontier. Good grief our download speed is 1.O and it has been like this for TEN YEARS. Many do not have any other choices and our state REFUSES to add internet service as an utility so we can’t even file a complaint. A
Lol that would have to mean Manchin would need to stop distracting methods to point the American public that his daughter, who he "Aunt Becky"'d to a degree 3x as bad as "Aunt Becky" did to her child (see: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Virginia_University_M.B.A._controversy), buying her the position of CEO of the American pharmaceutical company who is the leading manufacturer of name brand hydroxychloroquin in form of Plaquenil. The company is Mylan. And she was the same Mylan CEO who ran the cost up for epi pens 1300% over night a couple years ago and giving herself a 5 digit pay raise and left people dead from anaphylaxis...aka the main concern for severe complications of the COVID19 vaccines. And then he would have to address the fact that his daughter "retired" two months ago while not having someone replace her as CEO. Then have to face the fact that Mylan announced last week that it was closing all locations in WV and PA, leaving tens of thousands of Americans unemployed over night, and moving all operations overseas. Yet, NO ONE is reporting on that. Manchin's only concerned about distraction from the fact that he and his Mylan CEO daughter killed tens of thousands of wv jobs and moved overseas, after making bank off the back of hydroxychloroquin.
Its beautiful country, and I am a remote worker, but I just checked all three cities on Zillow and there is no home on one acre for under 140,000. which is my personal limit. So I looked at Air BnB for a three month stay in Morganstown, the option (with a pet) was a crappy little cottage for 17,000. for three months. This program wont work unless someone is willing to rent in town, not buy. The have the same housing inflation as most of the country right now, too bad.
If the video is about West Virginia, why is the thumbnail of the NYU campus next to Washington Square Park? The random stock footage shown next to the interview panel was of NYC (8:22) and somehow a still image of that stock footage became the thumbnail? I feel bamboozled lol
@@Bt2027 Yes, it is true .. You can google maps Washington Square Park which is the main part of NYU campus and see that red building. I recognized it too.
Grew up in Charleston, and I couldn’t wait to move out! Absolutely no diversity in WV. No opportunities for young people. They are building the Capitol city up into one big public housing project. It’s really a depressing place to be.
You must while there is time get out of those big cities! Maybe move to West Virginia. There wont be as many problems in the mountains as there will be in the big city's. And it will be awhile before the mobs find you. I say this as a friend.
@@mithrandirthegrey7644 never complained Bro. And I disagree that there’s no benefit in having diverse communities or a society. Every group contributes. Makes everything better.
@@mithrandirthegrey7644 the reason why there is less civil unrest or crime in those less diverse states or even countries in your example is because there was never poverty caused by systemic racism in those places
You do not have five years. The schooling your child is getting is not worth your staying where you are. Those Chinese bayonets are eighteen inches long, And those so-called leaders at all levels of Government don't give a pop tart about your family.
Nice place, but beware, they have this lovely thing called personal property taxes. You now, to make up for the lack of income taxes. Stuff is never really yours, you pay taxes on it forever, your home, furniture, car. clothes, everything...and if you have kids, schools are questionable in many areas, and, well watch the video...nice but...oh, had to add, yep, used to live there and have family there now.
Household good are specifically exempted. It is far more for larger ticket items like vehicles or boats with a title. The perk tho is the property tax is low compared to most places so get a nice house and don't buy a nice car. The roads here will tear it up anyway.
What about half of the people who burned down their cities for almost half a decade where were they from? .....waiting. 🤔. Im gonna be here a long time😂🤣
I went to school for 4 years in WV. A bunch of my friends live there. If you don’t mind being a little over 1hr from Pittsburgh or DC metro area then okay to live if you wish. My one professor traveled to Morgantown every weekday from Pittsburgh to teach philosophy. The beautiful scenery and nice cafes but they have their issues. High drug use, poverty, bad roads, racism, etc. All of POC friends that are WV residents have experienced some sort of racism. One Asian family had to leave due to blatant racism faced against them as they barely knew English at first while their kids couldn’t be in esol as no such program.
@@iluvcakes19 It’s not as bad if you avoid the bad areas and majority of the homeless people. You can still go as Morgantown is slightly better than some of other WV cities and towns.
It is a beautiful state-I love hiking and camping there even if I have to drive 2-3 hrs. Once my sister and I was lost in bear territory for hours and we finally found the road, these hunter guys gave us a ride to our car. If you go there to do outdoorsy stuff, you are fine.
Funny that there are a lot of people bashing the state most of whom have probably never been there and saying you couldn’t pay them enough to live in West Virginia. Well to be quite honest you couldn’t pay me to live anywhere else:) don’t let hearsay influence your thoughts. This is probably the most humble and welcoming state you could ever travel to. Just about anyone here would give you the shirt right off their back. I’ve been to almost every state in U.S. there is no place like WV💛💙
Your state is the only state with a population decline. 🤡 Why do you think they're desperate to recruit smart people to move their and bring their money with them
WV is really a hidden gem. It's close to everything on the East Coast, it's beautiful and cheap. The people are friendly and welcome outsiders to move in, which is different than most rural places. Im still considering it myself. Only thing is I'm not a techy so I'll have to caugh up the dough myself but I still think it's worth it.
If I had the kind of job that I could literally do from anywhere, I would definitely be applying. The cost of living advantage in a place like Charleston, Wheeling or Clarksburg is incredible! Look at real estate/rental listings sometime. Income, sales, B & E and property taxes are way lower than in states like IL, NY, NJ, CA and TX. It's a great opportunity for someone willing to forego some of the amenities and conveniences of living in a huge city for a substantial annual savings.
West virginia powered the country during the first world war and the second world war and we are still powering it now. We know the world is changing but saying disrespectful things is just plain rude.
I went there last week to visit and it wasn’t too bad. The people in the town were very friendly and were trying to convince me to live there 😂. As a New Yorker they were surprised to see me there. As you know the majority race is White and a small blend of the other races.
I am not a West Virginia politician so as far as I am concerned WV don't want people coming here that have the hatered that I see on most of these comments. It is clear to me that a lot of you either don't understand or just don't like country people. Just remember this the citizens of WV open their arms to people who want to retire here in our bueatifiul state and fit in. But we do not want those who criticize our way of life and tell those worn out old WV jokes. We have heard them all. We are kind, friendly people but we believe in our way of life which includes God, family, freedom, love of country, police, military, our guns and our flag. We are not crazy racist people we treat everyone with respect when they show it to us. If you don't like us drive around our state or straight through it.
I get frustrated seeing these stories about WV because they always show rolling hills, running streams, a small town, people working on a farm, etc. We have other things in WV too! We have buildings, cities, new housing, apartment complexes, bike trails, Uber, and even Bird scooters! We are not just sitting in poverty waiting for the “new city folk” to move in to save us. We have the infrastructure- good schools, wealthy banks, lavish resorts with golf and skiing, excellent hospitals, doctors, and dentists! Yes, I typed all this on an iPhone 14 connected to broadband internet. I love our rolling hills and rivers but hate always being typecast as just natural beauty. We are so much more than just a country song.
I was born and raised in WV, I had such an innocent and peaceful childhood, so many pleasant memories. Many of my relatives are buried there. As the conditions of the world are today, my intention is to retire and return to a more rural, secluded and peaceful part of WV. I have no concerns about doing so. Yes, I am black.
I am a WV native. I live about 35 minutes south of Morgantown in a moderately big town. I’ve traveled all over the country and seen beautiful places like the grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Colorado’s many beautiful parks. And, WV still has my heart. It is cheap living which is always a plus. Every place has their downfall, if we could just get joe manchin out and a new, young governor, this state could prosper.
It’s actually a double edged sword. It is a great time to move to WV or a cheaper state but eventually, salaries will lower. Example: An accounting firm will not pay you 6 figures as a tax associate in nyc if you end up relocating in Kentucky. There will be a correction in salaries. What you think you may end up saving in taxes, there will be a loss in salaries. Google already announced they will cut salaries to your real standard of living based on where you live which makes sense. You won’t pay a software engineer in New Delhi India the same as someone in the US even tho the company is only located in the US. It’s not fair to the company.
@@adrianaalcala9693 The city is nice but the people are only nice at first...it's a place to build up, not many people I've talked to want to stay long term in Tulsa. Any time a place will pay for people to move there, there are reasons they don't tell you.
If WVa cities and towns become gentrified and the cost of housing goes up, how will its poor residents afford to live their. If they sell their land to newcomers where will they move to? Why not improve the livelihoods of those already living there?
"Ascend West Virginia should start with West Virginians" 5:58 I agree with the notion that the state needs to help its own blood. The unfortunate fact is that the long term strategy that has a better pay off is to attract new blood into the state into coming and eventually injecting more into the state economy. You need all of those people who already have the high salaries to help bring dollars into the state, which in turn would allow the state to create programs to help more people down the road. The politician talking about "WV first" is too short sighted.
Who am I kidding though. That Senator only wants his votes now. Probably needs thick reading glasses in order to read the writing on the wall on what would give the state a better future years after he is gone from office.
I’m a Black guy who grew up in Southern, West Virginia, and for some reason continues to live and work here. Why don't they educate their own citizens to do the remote work, thus reduce unemployment in the area. Vermont's doing the same thing, yet many locals don't have decent jobs.

so true though, like i live near there in virginia, and they teach kids how to play the banjo in public schools. its very normal to be able to play an instrument, like verrrrry expected for families to sit around and all play different instruments and sing.
It maybe best to keep the secrets of West Virginia to ourselves. Big city rot sets in quickly even the minds of their populations are subject to it. Maybe they should stay in place. Maybe better for all concerned.
I was born in KY but my parents moved to Indiana when I was 3 years old in search of a better life. Meaning employment opportunities! Of course 85% of my family still live in KY with the rest in TN. I joked with my dad saying you left KY looking for work and I wanna go back to get out of work! I'm coming up on my retirement so I was looking for a place to live where my retirement would stretch even further. TN and WV being 2 other states I was looking at. I love how beautiful all 3 States are and wasn't sure how WV took to outsiders. I know KY can be funny like that but I have family ties there. Now if everyone moves to WV... That might not be as desirable financially for me?
Haha, I'd rather have the gun or cash. Not a liberal my friend. My whole family is from and still in WV. Probably what forms my sarcastic opinion actually.
That's what I'm thinking too. Say a remote position doesn't work out...it looks pretty desolate and any place offering money to move there means they most likely can't keep people there for reasons only the long term residents may know. 🤔
None, thats why they trying to bribe folks to move there, start businesses and pay taxes. Gotta wonder why most businesses STAY AWAY or MOVE AWAY in the first place. Also consider why there's such a BRAIN DRAIN from that State.
@Anthony Lee I went to school there for 4 years. I held jobs while I was there. I have a bunch of friends who are resident. Healthcare is always looking for more people but they don’t ever get enough people to apply. Morgantown is more economical stable than a bunch other cities due to the university.

I was born in Charleston, West Virginia, but due to my job, I presently live in Kentucky. I go home as much as possible. I, too, lived in Morgantown for 5 years and absolutely loved it. WV is a beautiful state and a wonderful place to live. I would move back home in a heart beat. Please remember that there are people in WV as well as Kentucky who are still fighting the Civil War. These people are few and far between.
I'm from the Bronx, by way of the Caribbean. Here on YT, watch a lot of the channel *"Just a Few Acres Farm."* I wish these folks well, but also please understand that without new blood and new ideas, you will stagnate. I hate seeing those solid old homes just crumble, so please be accepting of the new people who come in. As for the transplants, be as equally respectful.
WV never really ascribed to the "diversity" handbook. The homes stagnate because 3 reasons, coal was destroyed by fracing and natural gas prices, chemical plants have all gone to texas due to weather and petroleum refining capacity and the opiate crisis.
The pandemic has shown that there's no need to go to the office. While NYC is NYC and the same for San Fran, I personally no longer see the attraction of living in a big city. Before, it was * you can walk to work * you save a ton of money on commuting costs * you get to enjoy city life All of that is gone now. I program for a living and my commute is me rolling out of bed and walking to my office area! If I were single, I honestly might move to somewhere in Central America like Bogota, Colombia or some where in Panama or Costa Rica and take full advantage of making my American salary while spending almost nothing on living costs.
