Funny seeing this video now, I just got two WD153AA's that I believe to be in nearly perfect, if not perfect, health. The wild part to me is both were manufactured on July 4, 2000 which is really close to this drive.
That's awesome! It's great to hear of more of these doing well in the wild. That is a fairly interesting twist of fate! Only 3 days apart compared to this one is pretty crazy! I'm quite surprised that both of your drives are from the exact same day, so I assume they're from the same original system or something? Hopefully they'll keep on ticking for a while to come!
@@bigbluebananabread I’m not sure honestly, they were recycled as just the drives and no systems to be seen. Either way I’m tickled to have them, your channel got me interested in this era of WD drive again and it was super convenient timing that I stumbled across a great pair not even a month later.
Interesting story on this one, although that is shame to hear. Glad it ended up working incredibly well, who knows how long it sat for. Probably was stored in a temperature controlled environment wardrobe? Seems like drives last incredibly long that way as compared to a dark and cold basement or even worse a humid storage unit...wish I had one of these in this style that worked, as you know my luck isn't very good with Caviars of this era and older....
sweet drive, I do have Seagate bias regarding this time period, though most of my drives are WDs, but I would love to have a spare one alongside my trusty ST320420A that's currently sitting in my 370 build :)
I'm on the same page with you here! WD's have never been my favourite, but they're certainly good drives. The whole Barracuda II line with your ST320420A are pretty lovely! (I think I have one of those exact models somewhere, but I'll have to check...) Great choice in my opinion :)
@@bigbluebananabread WDs are good as well, at the moment all of my higher capacity spares are silver WD400BBs with ball bearings and they just refuse to die, though their bearings can be quite loud when they spin up after sitting in storage for some time, but the noise eventually settles down. Not the loudest seeking though, but at least it's audible, unlike the 20GB Protégé I have :)
