I aim to upload a new video at least once a month, although this isn't always possible. I cover both vintage & modern drives.
I attempt to post more in-depth articles about my drives on my site (accuracy not guaranteed!). Posts are synchronised with video publishing dates. If time doesn't allow for added info, then the post at least contains pictures of the drive from multiple angles.
Idk where my comment went so here it is. Nice maxtoribe (maxtor and miniscribe mashed into 1 word). Shame about that bad sector tho, and bearings are still decent enougj
Thanks so much for your kind words, I really appreciate it!! I need a lot of creativity to find good backgrounds for each video now, but it's quite fun in all honesty!
Vista as a whole, particularly SP2, were released after this drive was manufactured. I usually try to keep the OS demo's to be as close as possible to the manufacture date of the drive. While I can't always do this perfectly, this is one of those cases where I did my best with it! Although, perhaps something older than SP3 would have been wise.
Epic, nice to see what the insides of my sata DM17 looks and sounds like in operation, that drive is the windows 7 boot drive for my phenom 2 x6 1090t w/ GTX 580 machine. (Has 3 other HD’s totalling 7TB)
There are two main public servers I can think of, so I'll address them below: The first: discord.com/invite/yaV52cx3YZ - it has a few creators in it and quite a few others who are into all sorts of drives. Many people who comment on my videos can be found in there, so if you're into voice-coil stuff it's a good place to talk about it. If you're into really old drives, like stepper-based drives and things more from the late-80's and early 90's (which to be honest seems to be the main audience for this server), then you also have this one from DiskMaster's channel: discord.com/invite/ZaFgvkgBsv Hope this helps! Sorry for the late reply!
Sadly, it was my camera at the time. It was on its last legs, which is why my newer videos use a capture device instead, since the purple light issues were a problem!
I've had my P300 for 2 years now. I purchased it in July of 2022, and at that time, it was the cheapest 1TB I could find brand new. The hard drive is extremely reliable, but the biggest downside is that it's noisy, probably one of the noisiest HDDs I've ever owned. In fact, mine is probably louder compared to this video I've always ran a test through CrystaDiskInfo & HD Tune no errors were found whatsoever. It low-key reminds me of our old IBM Deskstar. Great video btw. Now I know that P300s are little more noisier. 🙂
Just found some documentation for the 72gb version of this drive, it’s got 12 platters 24 heads in the same case so is reckon this drive also has that many too.
Wow, amazing find, that's super cool! Do you happen to have a link or PDF of what you found? Would absolutely love to see it! (also possible on discord!)
Hello! I managed to buy my first Caviar!! It's really cool!!, very different from the other units... And this Caviar is in such a condition that it looks like I was the first person to use it. NO scratches on the cover, perfect bearings and no bad sectors! What I bought is the Caviar 2420 425mb With the pink stripe! I bought it for more or less Converting directly to the dollar, something like $56 with shipping.
That's amazing to hear! I'm very glad you were able to find something that nice, since I remember you mentioning before that it's pretty difficult in your location to find anything reasonable. No bads and great exterior condition? Can't get better!
That's probably because the cover is off so the top of the headstack isn't supported. WDs will do this if run without the cover too, at least the ones that even work at all like that.
@@nnasosss february 1989 , its a stepper based fujitsu m227d2. I dont know its condition yet , but i opened it and it looked very good. so i suppose that its in good condition ;) i will get an mfm controller soon and ill fully test it
Sadly, it has so many bad sectors that I can barely manage to put a very small partition on it. The seek test is pretty much all it can do now, aside from some very basic reads. Writing isn't possible anymore sadly.
It truly makes me like it even more than many of my other drives! The fact that this one looks so bad and has nothing wrong with it is amazing... Truly one of those moments which shows some of the worst looking drives can work great, but many cosmetically perfect drives can be totaled!
I had one similar to this. With the same seektest and mine was from 1992. But unfortunately my adapter blew up the Cirrus Logic chip and damaged the board.
Huge bummer! They're really nice. Did you hold on to the rest of the drive? Shame about the board on that one, finding a new one with damage like that would certainly be tough regardless.
Can't fix physical damage. These drives notoriously have major surface degradation as an issue, there's unfortunately no repairing a surface which is falling apart.
Great Fuji Electric! 0:04 I like that loud click after the spindle motor starts, it's called the mechanical head unlock. My Alps DR312C901A also has that loud click after the spindle motor starts.
I truly love the click of solenoids on startup! It's really lovely. I like that Alps drives often have those too, it's nice that they have some extra security when shipping them, so they're definitely a bit more hardy!
Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean? If this were a SCSI unit, the model number would be "FK319S-240R". Fuji used A or S to dictate which interface they used. The machine I used only has native IDE!
The drive is from 1998, so at the time it wouldn't have run XP on its release. I usually demo the most period correct OS from the manufacture year, even if it can fit something newer. This isn't the case with pre-95' drives, since in that case I just demo it if it fits (>40MB for RTM).
i have a first generation one! 2110at from 1996. started rought filled with bad sectors , gone after a full write so now its healthy! the video of it is on my yt
I think you have posted before, a quantum that was very old ( a Prodrive maybe ) that had been out of a old Macintosh computer with the rubber bumper issue. My mom had a classroom full of these old macs and one of them wasnt booting. It would turn on to the blinking "?" symbol with a diskette picture. I think what i ended up doing is firmly rapping on the side of the computer which then woke the drive up inside and i had to re-install the OS but after that the computer worked fine. I had a feeling that the drive had encountered stiction just like the Quantums did that were of that era.
Ah yes! It really does suck that those drives have that. I'm yet to make a video on the ProDrive from my Macintosh SE/30, but that drive also had the melty rubber I had to fix. The classic flashing question mark was definitely going off on mine too :) Interesting drives, the old Macintosh systems are really fun so it's a shame many of those original drives have been thrown out. They're quite easy to fix too (until you come across the later drives with the bumper under the platter....)
Fuji Electric, makes me think of Fuji Film, I think they made blank CD media? and floppy discs. Not sure if the 2 are connected. Nice drive. 240MB back then was a lot. It definitley sounds like a vintage hard drive. You definitly post some very obscure and forgotten hard drives, thanks for that. Sometimes brands i had never heard of. When you are into a hobby like mine you definitley come across stuff with brand names you never knew existed. Thank you for sharing!
Yeah, I have a ton of Fujifilm floppies too, they're good stuff! Fujifilm split off from Fuji Electric in the 1930's I believe, so there's definitely a historical connection. Both made some excellent stuff! (not that their modern day products are bad by any means) Thanks so much for watching as usual! I'm glad you enjoyed this one, it really is an interesting drive that I'm super happy to share!
(EDIT for future readers: see replies below, while this comment temporarily remains.) (From the description:) "Similar to many Deskstar's..." ...what? Which possession (thing that belongs to Deskstar)?
I really like this caviar drive! Unfortunately, here in Brazil buying on eBay is almost impossible! Because of the value of the dollar and taxes, buying a single old caviar would cost in dollars equivalent to $500 for a single caviar! So having a collection here is very difficult!
@@luisdbr9885 Aw I'm really sorry to hear that! That really stinks. I guess the domestic market also doesn't really have anything? That's crazy that it would cost you that much though, that's insane! Well, I really wish you the best of luck with picking up some drives, that's really collecting on hard mode!
The Maxtor drives with this self-test are some of the most interesting Maxtor drives I think! They just have such an odd spindle sound to them and the sound they make is really unusual from what is expected! Also interesting to see this one is a repaired unit by Maxtor going by the bottom left corner of the label! Looks great too : ))
They sound amazing! I already had to get to recording it since it sounds so good :) I actually had no idea it was repaired hahaha, my experience with these is basically nonexistent as you know, thanks for that info! I'm with you that these are really nice, thrilled this one ended up working great. Happy to join you with some great old Maxtors!!
Nice to see the strange behavior of different models when they appear dead at first, so glad it ended up working in the end! I have never heard one of these fail to initialize so that sound when it just bangs the actuator a few times before eventually seeking is a bit scary...
Yeah, I'm so happy it didn't end up being dead! It was the most I've probably spent on a single drive, so I was really upset when it started doing this. It's acting very reliably now though!! I'm glad it was interesting :)
