Yeah, FAR too many people move here to western Maine and have no idea what they are getting into. Living here is a series of trade-offs. If you can deal with that, then by all means come and enjoy. But if you are going to just constantly complain and try to turn it into something else...stay home. We like it the way it is.
I spent the first fourty years of my life in Western Massachusetts before I moved to Texas in 2010. I really miss the free New England states of Maine and New Hampshire. Every day for months its been over a hundred plus and no rain. To me, Maine looks like paradise.
lmfao. I live in southern Maine, and I can tell you for a fact that this place is the antithesis of a "free state". Just the other day I had to chase a Karen neighbor off my property after she felt the need to threaten calling the cops on me for ... putting pesticide on an ant hill - the denizens of said ant hill were biting my dog.
Yup, it's purty. And infested with black flies (imagine fleas with wings. Swarms of them.) and mosquitoes for about 4 months of the year. Add 5 months of rather brutal winter, a dreary mud season, and you're left with autumn. I loved fall in Maine. If you move there, I sincerely hope it's for you.
I live in the hellhole known as Manhattan which continues to just get worse, so the thought of peaceful Maine is very appealing to me for perhaps retirement. However, upon closer examination it seems that you would have to be insane to retire in a place like Maine, for all the obvious reasons some of which you mention. So I suppose this explains why just about every other New Yorker ends up retiring in Florida 😮

I lived in Central Maine. What finally got to me were the very short hours of daylight. The older I got, the more it affected me. You may not be affected by it, and the winter can be beautiful.

These videos are really in everyone’s best interest. It doesn’t benefit existing residents if outsiders flock to a state and drive up the already inflated property values, only to decide in a year or two that they can’t handle living there year round, and put their house on the market again. That increased turnover rate only makes the inflated property values worse.

No problem here, as a lifelong Mainer I love any discouragement of people moving to Maine. In fact it would be delightful if several thousands would leave.

There a fair number of assholes in Maine too, don’t kid yourself. I am a native Mainer and have lived many years in both states and in New York. Massachusetts has no corner on assholes!
Even in a major city, you are an hour away from emergency medical care because of the traffic. If you want ti reduce the travel time to 30 minutes, you have to live right next to a hospital, no matter where you are.
This video's points could really apply to living anywhere in Maine. Even in the Portland area - where I live - in addition to the out of control idiotic politics of the region, every single point you made applies - especially the employment situation.
