Big Jim Video Productions (me) spent a weekend in the Cumberland/Frostburg area, chasing the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad on it's sojourns from Cumberland, MD to Frostburg, MD. We get to see Baldwin 2-8-0 #734 both in the rain and sunshine as it earns it's "Mountain Thunder" nickname on three separate trips. We also catch a bit of the "Murder Mystery Train" as well led by GP30 #502 with a short two-car consist on Saturday night. Enjoy this video, and don't forget to check out my other videos as well!!

Now that's the 734 i remember!, the B&O 6 was a good whistle but it wasn't a good match for the 734 like this whistle, superb video :)

We had an engineer a few years ago who did nothing but play with the whistle, drove myself and a lot of others nuts. I try and do it a bit more professionally, the whistle is a warning device, and some people don't want you to play them a song on it before they get hit haha.

Was it Cody Cook? He left in September 2010 to be a CSX conductor right?

Really love that steam boat whistle. Steam boats must have been really exciting to hear and watch. I was born too late. Mark Twain was 'Da Man'. Of course taking nothing away from Casey Jones. :>) This 'Rail Sounds' is better than the one from Lionel. I recorded it for the 'Polar Express' layout around the living room. Grand kids love it as it disappears under wife's piano and emerges through her 'Christmas Forest' with dozens of Caribou (Reindeer) from Hobby Lobby. Still looking for 'Wolves'.

@bigjim4life Yes I loved it! I'm from Central PA but I live on a Marine Base with my husband in Hawaii and I was home for a month long visit while my husband was deployed and my mom and her boyfriend have connections with the guys that operate the train so it was nice to be able to ride in the cab and learn how it works!

Yes, this used to be double-track territory - but now the other right of way is used for the trail.

Is that the same exact whistle the railway used when 734 made its debut on the WMSR in the early 90s?

Excellent and very professional editing. No wasted time waiting for action and sounds. My RR sound for the Christmass 'Polar Express' layout is now Only featuring your work. Keep up the great vids. Thank You for your devotion and time. You beat Lionel and MTH by a long margin.

I agree, a Hancock on non-superheated steam sounds amazing, have you ever heard a IC Steamboat whistle on non-superheated steam before? that also sounds pretty amazing.

Much more authentic sounding whistle performances by the engineers than in other videos. Hopefully the boys running the engine got the word when they play with the whistle it makes the whole deal sound like "Dollywood".

#734 was built in 1916 i believe for the old LS&I as number 34. And as far as I know she is not equipped with superheater tubes, but I could be wrong haha. And I agree that IC on the 3985 sounded really good
@jasonoliver8416
@jasonoliver8416 5 лет назад
She does have superheaters she is the same as the 33 at the age of steam round bouse
@NickelPlateRoad779
@NickelPlateRoad779 11 лет назад
Well i'm glad they kept it instead of just scrapping it because not many of the LS&I tenders are around. I wonder if they have ever thought about making a auxiliary tender out of it.

Very true, but even if this was the water level route with 734 and a Mohawk on parallel tracks running side by side the 734 would still go farther between water stops (without using the water pans and tender scoops for both locomotives tenders) because the boiler capacity is much smaller on a Consolidation than on a Mohawk and therefore she wouldn't have to use as much water when the water level in the 734's boiler got low.

Its to bad that 502 has been equipped with a GM 645 engine, wonder if there are any 567's lying around some where ready to be restored and reused?
@uratoolbag
@uratoolbag 13 лет назад
seems like it needs some valve timing.they would probably get more power out of it if they did.

@LRodgers1108 I'm jealous! Wish I could do that...
@NickelPlateRoad779
@NickelPlateRoad779 11 лет назад
Haha well then. I didn't know she could go that far without stopping for water because I can remember reading about the Mohawk tenders huge coal bay and small water compartment inhibiting the Mohawks oval range between stops for water, but I guess that's not much of a problem when the locomotive the tender is connected to is considerably smaller than a Mohawk... And that's a shame they should at least cosmetically restore the old LS&I tender.
